Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Auditing Audit This book is designed for the examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, and the Society of Accountants and Auditors, and also for clerks engaged in audit practice who desire some knowledge of this specialised branch of accountancy. As a student, the author felt the need for a book which would serve as an introduction, and would be of assistance in reading the large works of the authorities on the subject, and this book has been arranged with that end in View. It is not intended as a substitute for the excellent works already published, but to assist the student in the early days of his training as an accountant, so that he may more properly appreciate the more detailed treatment of the subject which he will find in the more advanced treatises. The auditor is frequently invited to advise on account ancy organisation and modern methods, consequently a chapter is included dealing with these important matters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Auditing Studies, 1917 In the preparation of students for entrance into the profes sion of accountancy the teacher has to meet the criticism that such students are °only theoretically trained. Theory is the logical foundation for practice; however, theory alone does not make for success any more than does practice without theory. The ideal instruction seems to combine theory with practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Audits This little work has been compiled with two main objects. In the first place, it is an attempt to lay down, within the limits of a book of moderate size, the main duties of Auditors, and the principles affecting their work. In the second place, regard has been had to the needs and requirements of students for examinations, in the choice and treatment of the subjects dealt with. As most Accountants are aware, there are already two eminent classical works in the field, by Mr. Pixley and Mr. Dicksee respectively; but many find these works too cumbersome, and it has been the effort of the author to produce a volume of portable size, giving information in as concise a form as possible, and rid of any Acts of Parliament, law reports, or other matter not of special or vital interest to Auditors. For the convenience of students, page references to the works of Messrs. Pixley and Dicksee have been given in the Index, side by side with the page number on which the various subjects are dealt with in this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Auditing, 1916 A young man came to New York with the intention of entering the profession of accountancy. He was energetic and ambitious; had a good general education and some experience in accounting work. He obtained employment with a firm of certified public accountants. The usual grind of footing and checking followed for a while; always under the direction of the man in charge of the engagement. Finally came the long sought chance to go out on an engagement alone. He received no instructions; in fact he never had received any instructions about how the work should be done. What he had learned had been learned by observation. He had been afraid to ask ques tions for fear such procedure would create the suspicion that he did not know as much about his work as he should. For the same reason when sent on the engagement alone he did not ask for working papers and reports which would serve as guides. The result of his work almost proved disastrous. Conscientious and careful as the work had been the report, although prepared with great pains, was not in the form used by the firm. When it was reviewed by the report department it was not only torn to pieces and made over but the accountant was held up to ridi cule before a number of persons who happened to be in the room. This unfortunate experience would have broken the spirit of some men. In this case it only served to lash the subject into a frenzied determination to succeed in the field of endeavor which he had chosen. How he toiled far into the night for several years while carrying on his daily work, at the same time getting a technical education, as well as some of his many and varied experiences, might make an interesting story but they have no place here. Some of the things he was never able to find in books and about which he was too proud to ask are set forth in this book. It is dedicated to a man who represents all that is fine and noble in a professional man; one who cannot help but be an inspiration to all who come in contact with him.
