Dr. Abigail Stahl McNamee is an American educator who went to Northern Ireland for many years to write about the stories of the integrated education movement. She asks: “What families and schoolpersonnel have participated in the movement? What risks have they taken to do so? What church personnel and politicians have supported it? What do the children who attend an integrated school, and those who attend the State (Protestant) and Catholic schools in the same community, understand about the uniqueness of the school that they attend? Furthermore, the structure and the current situation of the Northern Ireland school system are shortly summed up. In the second part, I will provide information about NICIE. This includes their history, work, organization, as well as their aims as a group, that wants to offer support and to encourage the peace process in Northern Ireland. Furthermore, NICIE's own definition of integrated education, as well as responses and recommendations to official bodies. Three studies will be presented in the third part of this paper. Two studies, which were set up and published by Claire McGlynn and a opinion poll, which was employed by NICIE. Northern Ireland, since its partition from Southern Ireland, had always been confronted with religious tension. The result has been conflict and for many years one was faced with the challenges of solving the problem of secular segregation. Children, who grow up in a society or community, where prejudice and intolerance are part of every day life, can never develop into mature and liberal human beings. By bringing Protestant and Catholic children together in one school, in order to learn with each other and from each other, will eventually lead Northern Ireland to peace and reconciliation.

Book excerpt: Belfast punk and the Troubles is an oral history of the punk scene in Belfast from the mid-1970s to the mid-80s. The book explores what it was like to be a punk in a city shaped by the violence of the Troubles, and how this differed from being a punk elsewhere. It also asks what it means to have been a punk – how punk unravels as a thread throughout the lives of the people interviewed, and what that unravelling means in the context of post-peace-process Northern Ireland. In doing so, it suggests a critical understanding of sectarianism, subjectivity and memory politics in the North, and argues for the importance of placing punk within the segregated structures of everyday life described by the interviewees. Adopting an innovative oral history approach drawing on the work of Luisa Passerini and Alessandro Portelli, the book analyses a small number of oral history interviews with participants in granular detail. Outlining the historical context and the cultural memory of punk, the central chapters each delve into one or two interviews to draw out the affective, imaginative and political ways in which punks and former punks evoke their memories of taking part in the scene. Through this method, it analyses the punk scene as a structure of feeling shaped through the experience of growing up in wartime Belfast. Belfast punk and the Troubles is an intervention in Northern Irish historiography stressing the importance of history from below, and will be compelling reading for historians of Ireland and of punk, as well as those interested in innovative approaches to oral history.

Using public opinion surveys conducted over a period of half a century, this book covers changes in public opinion across all areas of society and politics, including elections, education, community relations and national identity. The surveys show that despite peace, Protestants and Catholics remain as deeply divided as ever. The vast majority marry co-religionists, attend religious schools and have few friends across the religious divide. The results have implications not just for peacemaking in Northern Ireland, but for other societies emerging from conflict. The main lesson of peacemaking in Northern Ireland is that political reform has to be accompanied by social change across the society as a whole. Peace after conflict needs social as well as political change.

The author analyzes the Catholic authorities' efforts to maintain clerical control of Catholic schools in Northern Ireland from 1921 to the Education (Northern Ireland) Order of October 1993, concentrating upon the events surrounding the major education laws of 1923, 1925, 1930, 1947 and 1968 and the Orders in Council of 1989 and 1993. He also assesses the impact of the 'Gaelic' features of Catholic schools upon education policy, to determine whether national issues influenced the decisions of either the Catholic authorities or the devolved government. The book will demonstrate that, while these topics were central for some nationalists and unionists, they were minor issues for the senior Catholic clergy and the education officials of the devolved government. It then studies the Catholic authorities' response to the success of the campaign in recent decades for integrated schools, educating Catholic and Protestant children in 'shared schools'. It also explains the reasons for dwindling Unionist and Protestant enthusiasm for integrated schools. The author shows how the Catholic authorities' fear of the education committees created by the 1923 Act primarily explains their refusal to transfer control to the education committees. He also estimates the financial and educational price paid by Northern Ireland's Catholics to maintain a network of autonomous denominational schools, showing that the advent of mass secondary education after the Second World War led to a major contrast in the opportunities available to Catholic and Protestant children.
