Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of an Effective Public Speech The short addresses in this small volume originally were delivered by the author as one of the members of a class in public speaking at the West Side Y. M. C. A., in New York' City. Mr. Walter H. Robinson, who conducted the class, requested that the addresses be put in written form. This was done, with some amplifications, and the addresses were then read before the same class. Some of the members were kind enough to sug gest that the addresses should be pre served in printed form, as they believed they had derived valuable assistance from them. In deference to this sugges tion the author has had them printed privately, without making any attempt to secure a publisher for the purpose of having the work distributed generally. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... STATEMENT OF FACTS OB NAERATION The narration, or statement of facts, should be an immediate expansion of the principal idea as expressed in the introduction. Its purpose is to give to the audience a clear understanding of the basic facts on which the argument is to be constructed. Here again great clarity should prevail. Unless the audience clearly understand the facts forming the basis of the speaker's contention they may miss the point of the argument entirely, a little later on. Of course, this statement must be as concise as comprehensiveness and clearness will permit. If it is too long and an undue amount of time is given to a recital of details the attention of the audienco will be lost. The result of this will be that they will not thoroughly understand the matter and when the speaker comes to the point of stating his proposition, immedi ately after the narration, the audience will not be in a mental condition to grasp the point thoroughly, and the address will become more or less obscure. The cumulative effort of losing the attention of an audience at a critical point in a speech, not infrequently spells complete failure. If a book containing language which is obscure and difficult to understand is tiresome and hard to read, how much more so is a speech couched in obscure and ambiguous sentences. A reader can turn back and read over again matter which he does not understand on the first perusal. But if the meaning of any portion of a speech is lost the listener cannot go back and study over the words again. Not having understood the meaning of one sentence the next becomes still more blind. A little later, when another reference is made to the same subject on the mistaken assumption of the speaker that those in the audience have...

Direct; ness is the searching out element which 1s so charming in conver sation, and which should be carried into public address. It is strange why so many then get up in the pulpit or on the platform' and ass'ume an ethereal air, and take on the heavenly tone. The singsong, chanting method destroys directness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Public Speaking Short evening courses in public speaking have become so popular that the problem Of supplementing the work in the class room with helpful text material has given instructors great difficulty. The average text book is too large and night students have not the time to carry out programs of selective reading. The author has attempted to fill this need by setting forth in a brief, concise form only the essentials of the subject. He does not claim for the work any originality of analysis; his sole aim has been to include in one small volume a brief but comprehensive outline of the fundamentals of effective speaking in as logical an order as the subject permits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Speaking Principles and Practice Tins book is designed to set forth the main principles of effective platform delivery, and to provide a large body of material for student practice. The work laid out may be used to form a separate course of study, or a course of training running parallel with a course in debating or other original speaking. It has been prepared with a View also to that large number who want to speak, or have to speak, but cannot have the advantage of a teacher. Much is therefore said in the way of caution, and untechnical language is used throughout. The discussion of principles in Part One is intended as a help towards the student's understanding of his task, and also as a common basis of criticism in the relation between teacher and pupil. The preliminary fundamental work of Part Two, Technical Training, deals first with the right formation of tone, the development of voice as such, the securing of a fixed right vocal habit. Following comes the adapting of this improved voice to the varieties of use, or expressional effect, demanded of the public speaker. After this critical detailed drill, the student is to take the plat form, and apply his acquired technique to continued dis course, receiving criticism after each entire piece of work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Speaking For some time the amount of public speaking Offered by colleges and universities has been increasing, and at the same time both the skill of teaching and our knowledge of the field have likewise been developing. New researches have been made; many facts and theories in psychology have been found use ful and by threshing out various problems in conventions and speech publications we have grown in wisdom. This textbook has been prepared in the belief that from these sources it is possible to add considerable new information to those well-tried principles that have been accumulating since the time Of Aris totle. We must also face the fact that a discipline as old as ours is likely to become burdened with much questionable material. By applying the caustic of vigorous skepticism to the dogma of our field, an attempt has been made to keep this presentation sufficiently conservative and essentially sound. I have, in fact, made a deliberate effort to stop each discussion at the point of greatest interest, leaving plenty of room for further inquiry on the part of the student, and for supplementary comment by the teacher. No student is advised to work without a teacher if he can help it; but since many are forced to do so, I have tried to present the material in such a way that the student may make something of it for himself, and apply it intelligently in practice, whether in or out of the classroom. I need hardly say that practice in some form is essential, and that nobody can learn public speaking from a book alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effective Speaking an Exposition of the Laws, of Effectiveness in the Choice of Material in Speech: With Examples and Exercises Investigation Deductive and Inductive. (my method of investigation was both deductive and inductive. I began a restudy of the representative works on speaking and rhetoric. This investigation included, among others, the works of Aristotle, Quintilian, Cicero, Whately, Camp bell, Blair, Hill, Genung, Bautain, Kames. This careful restudy led me to the conclusion that little that was new had been added to Aristotle, and that while Aristotle was masterly in his analysis, he failed to present a construct five system that could be of daily use to the twentieth cen tury speaker.)
