Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of Fine-Aggregate Concrete I. Introduction During the meeting of the Texas Road Builders' Association in Austin, February 18 to 20, 1920, the general discussion of concrete construction developed the facts that in certain sections of Texas the available local concrete aggregate is rather fine; that coarse aggregate can be secured only at a very high cost; and that, under such condition, it might be well to prepare concrete without the use of coarse aggregate, increasing, when necessary, the cement-aggregate ratio so as to secure the desired physical properties in the concrete. This condition suggested the need for an investigation to determine how the compressive strength of the concrete varies with the relative quantity of cement when the maximum size of the aggregate used in the preparation of the concrete is considerably smaller than that usually employed in concrete construction. Accordingly, four series of tests were made in the manner and with the results described in this bulletin. II. Scope Of The Investigation The object of the investigation was to determine the ultimate compressive strength at 28 days of concrete prepared of fairly well graded aggregate the maximum size of which varied from one-eighth to one-half inch. In addition, tests were made for the purpose of determining something of the effect of additional water on the strength of the concrete, and also the effect of rodding the concrete in which excess water was used. A few tests were made for the purpose of comparing the strength of 6 by 12-inch cylinders with that of the 2 by 4-inch cylinders used for the majority of the specimens. Book excerpt: Bringing together in one volume the latest research and information, this book provides a detailed guide to the selection and use of aggregates in concrete. After an introduction defining the purpose and role of aggregates in concrete, the authors present an overview of aggregate sources and production techniques, followed by a detailed study of their physical, mechanical and chemical properties. This knowledge is then applied to the use of aggregates in both plastic and hardened concretes, and in the overall mix design. Special aggregates and their applications are discussed in detail, as are the current main specifications, standards and tests.

Book excerpt: Sustainable Resource Management: Modern Approaches and Contexts presents the application of the current concept of sustainability to the management of natural resources, such as water, land, minerals and metals using theoretical field knowledge and illustrative real-world examples. Initially, the book defines sustainability, detailing its evolution and how it has been adapted to each of the contexts in which it is used. Furthermore, sustainability is made up of three main areas of science—environmental, social and economic—which are rarely considered together. This book is a complete reference guide to sustainability of natural resources for academics, researchers, practitioners and postgraduate-level students, and more. As sustainability is an interdisciplinary field, linked to most sciences, it is also of use to all fields of science that need to maintain sustainable practices and specific details on the methodologies and techniques needed for sustainable resource management. Provides an integrated approach for modern tools, methodologies and indicators for sustainable resource management Evaluates emerging trends and advanced approaches in sustainable resource management, detailing the most up-to-date research and management considerations Describes advanced sustainable resource management technologies and presents case studies where applicable
