What she didn't know, is that this desire would force her to cross paths with Boston's most notorious gang, the Fire Jackals. Juniper will stop at nothing to find the truth, and Rayne would never forgive herself if Juniper got hurt in the process. Will Juniper's quest for the truth tear their lives apart or forge an unbreakable bond between them?

Book excerpt: During the Sixties the nation turned its eyes to San Francisco as the city's police force clashed with movements for free speech, civil rights, and sexual liberation. These conflicts on the street forced Americans to reconsider the role of the police officer in a democracy. In The Streets of San Francisco Christopher Lowen Agee explores the surprising and influential ways in which San Francisco liberals answered that question, ultimately turning to the police as partners, and reshaping understandings of crime, policing, and democracy. The Streets of San Francisco uncovers the seldom reported, street-level interactions between police officers and San Francisco residents and finds that police discretion was the defining feature of mid-century law enforcement. Postwar police officers enjoyed great autonomy when dealing with North Beach beats, African American gang leaders, gay and lesbian bar owners, Haight-Ashbury hippies, artists who created sexually explicit works, Chinese American entrepreneurs, and a wide range of other San Franciscans. Unexpectedly, this police independence grew into a source of both concern and inspiration for the thousands of young professionals streaming into the city's growing financial district. These young professionals ultimately used the issue of police discretion to forge a new cosmopolitan liberal coalition that incorporated both marginalized San Franciscans and rank-and-file police officers. The success of this model in San Francisco resulted in the rise of cosmopolitan liberal coalitions throughout the country, and today, liberal cities across America ground themselves in similar understandings of democracy, emphasizing both broad diversity and strong policing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth are disproportionately represented in the U.S. youth homelessness population. In Coming Out to the Streets, Brandon Andrew Robinson examines their lives. Based on interviews and ethnographic fieldwork in central Texas, Coming Out to the Streets looks into the LGBTQ youth's lives before they experience homelessness—within their families, schools, and other institutions—and later when they navigate the streets, deal with police, and access shelters and other services. Through this documentation, Brandon Andrew Robinson shows how poverty and racial inequality shape the ways that the LGBTQ youth negotiate their gender and sexuality before and while they are experiencing homelessness. To address LGBTQ youth homelessness, Robinson contends that solutions must move beyond blaming families for rejecting their child. In highlighting the voices of the LGBTQ youth, Robinson calls for queer and trans liberation through systemic change.

Book excerpt: Now and then, you still can see the tattered remains of a bumper sticker exclaiming: “If you remember the ’60s, you weren’t there!” But Steven P. Unger is an exception to the rule—he took notes. As a result, his novel Dancing in the Streets is replete with unforgotten and unforgettable images of events and scenes that have long been lost in a smoke-filled haze. From the Merry Pranksters’ Wavy Gravy teaching breathing lessons outside Nixon’s first Inaugural Ball to a near-fatal encounter with Charles de Gaulle’s Republican Guard in Paris, there are compelling scenes from beginning to end no less cinematically vivid for the fact that they’re real. And while the story-chapters of Dancing in the Streets have more than just a ring of truth to them along with generous helpings of riotous comedy, there is also a compelling mystery haunting Unger’s alter ego, Steven Strazza: a deathbed revelation that leads to the discovery of long-buried secrets of murders affecting families on three different continents.

He delves into the emotional side of why Vinegar Hill, a 20-acre-tract, was deemed an unbearable slum, and had to be destroyed immediately in 1963. Everything wrong with Charlottesville was blamed on the innocent inhabitants of the "Hill." When three notorious hoodlums killed a UVA student, and Gabe Owens informed on them, most of the City Council and the UVA President swung into action. They masterminded a plan to demolish the homes and businesses of all Blacks on the "Hill," for the crimes of one or two people. The above were helped along by the actions of three "racist" police officers who had murdered William Griot, to keep him from divulging the secret that they were actually Blacks. This novel is intriguing, mysterious, spiritual, and down-home soulful all at once. In this novel, James enters the mind of the reader from page one, and does not let him/her go.

It was considered so sexually frank and realistic, that the book had to be privately printed at first. It and GEORGE'S MOTHER, the shorter novel that follows in this edition, were eventually hailed as the first genuine expressions of Naturalism in American letters and established their creator as the American apostle of an artistic revolution which was to alter the shape and destiny of civilization itself.

'A breathtaking, heartbreaking thriller' – Jake Arnott It is February 1976, and the naked corpse of a shockingly underage rent boy is fished out of a pond on Hampstead Heath. Since the police don't seem to care, twenty-year-old Tommy Wildeblood – himself a former 'Dilly boy' prostitute – finds himself investigating. Dodging murderous Soho hoodlums and the agents of a more sinister power, Tommy uncovers another, even more shocking crime: the Liberal leader and likely next Home Secretary, Jeremy Thorpe, has had his former male lover executed on Exmoor and got clean away with it. Now the trail of guilt seems to lead higher still, and a ruthless Establishment will stop at nothing to cover its tracks. In a gripping thriller whose cast of real-life characters includes Prime Minister Harold Wilson, his senior adviser Lady Falkender, gay Labour peer Tom Driberg and the investigative journalist Paul Foot, Adam Macqueen plays 'what if' with Seventies political history – with a sting in the tail that reminds us that the truth can be just as chilling as fiction. 'A fucking fantastic read. A gripping what-if thriller, packed with vivid period detail and page-turning twists. To find myself actually making an appearance in the final chapter was just cream on the cake' – Tom Robinson

At one moment the place was a gay, carefree city of pleasure-seekers; the next it became a dark metropolis of the damned, with a million men and women cowering from the clutches of the Little Men who sprang from their dank lairs, to pillage and murder at will. Somewhere, Roy Parker knew, was the girl he loved, held by the dread Master of Darkness whose mad designs brought tortured, bestial death to all who came within his power!
