Book excerpt: From the man the Wall Street Journal hailed as "the guru of Revenue Management" comes revolutionary ways to recover from the after effects of downsizing and refocus your business on growth. Whatever happened to growth? In Revenue Management, Robert G. Cross answers this question with his ground-breaking approach to revitalizing businesses: focusing on the revenue side of the ledger instead of the cost side. The antithesis of slash-and-burn methods that left companies with empty profits and dissatisfied stockholders, Revenue Management overturns conventional thinking on marketing strategies and offers the key to initiating and sustaining growth. Using case studies from a variety of industries, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations, Cross describes no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech methods that managers can use to increase revenue without increasing products or promotions; predict consumer behavior; tap into new markets; and deliver products and services to customers effectively and efficiently. His proven tactics will help any business dramatically improve its bottom line by meeting the challenge of matching supply with demand.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate forecasts are crucial to a revenue management system. Poor estimates of demand lead to inadequate inventory controls and sub-optimal revenue performance. Forecasting for airline revenue management systems is inherently difficult. Competitive actions, seasonal factors, the economic environment, and constant fare changes are a few of the hurdles that must be overcome. In addition, the fact that most of the historical demand data is censored further complicates the problem. This dissertation examines the challenge of forecasting for an airline revenue management system in the presence of censored demand data. This dissertation analyzed the improvement in forecast accuracy that results from estimating demand by unconstraining the censored data. Little research has been done on unconstraining censored data for revenue management systems. Airlines tend to either ignore the problem or use very simple ad hoc methods to deal with it. A literature review explores the current methods for unconstraining censored data. Also, practices borrowed from areas outside of revenue management are adapted to this application. For example, the Expectation-Maximization (EM) and other imputation methods were investigated. These methods are evaluated and tested using simulation and actual airline data. An extension to the EM algorithm that results in a 41% improvement in forecast accuracy is presented.

Book excerpt: A major problem arising in airline alliances is to design allocation mechanisms determining how the revenue of a product should be shared among the airlines. The nucleolus is a concept of cooperative game theory that provides solutions for allocating the cost or benefit of a cooperation. This work provides fair revenue proportions for the airline alliances based on the nucleolus, which assumes a centralized decision making system. The proposed mechanism is used as a benchmark to evaluate the fairness of the revenue sharing mechanisms, where the alliance partners behave selfishly. Additionally, a new selfish revenue allocation rule is developed that improves the performance of the existing methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, the airline industry has seen two major changes: Deregulation, which led to an increase in competition, and the development of revenue management systems. Paradoxically the revenue management models used have not incorporated many competitive considerations. In this thesis we study the interactions between existing airline revenue management systems in competitive markets. We use the Passenger Origin Destination Simulator (PODS) for simulations. After a review of the past research on such interactions, we develop our own model and use simulations to identify and measure the extent to which revenue management systems of competing airlines affect each other. The model introduced highlights the importance of spill-of-demand between airlines. We show that with current revenue management practice, a legacy carrier should be less sensitive than a low-cost carrier to revenue management competitive interactions. As compared to an equivalent monopoly, an airline oligopoly tends to allocate more seats to high-fare passengers and fewer seats to low-fare passengers. With steady demand distributions, an airline's expected revenues are a decreasing function of the seat capacity allocated by its competitors to high-fare passengers. Existing revenue management systems react to competitor moves automatically only if a change in the seat allocation rule by an airline occurs over a large enough number of successive departures to be detected by forecasters. We then suggest how to improve revenue management based on the interactions identified. With steady demands, if a competitor increases (respectively decreases) its seat allocation for high-fare passengers, the best response to optimize revenues on the short-term is to decrease (respectively increase) seat allocation for high-fare passengers. We also show that the use of EMSRb-optimization by competitors results in a near-optimum competitive equilibrium, and a near-optimum cooperative equilibrium if airlines do not share revenues. Rarely can competitive interactions justify an airline to override the EMSRb seat-allocation rule to optimize revenues. Last, we introduce LOCO-based Forecast Multiplication, a heuristic forecast adjustment made in response to the current seat availability of the competitors that can increase an airline's revenues substantially.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive introduction to the concepts, theories, and applications of pricing and revenue optimization. From the initial success of "yield management" in the commercial airline industry down to more recent successes of markdown management and dynamic pricing, the application of mathematical analysis to optimize pricing has become increasingly important across many different industries. But, since pricing and revenue optimization has involved the use of sophisticated mathematical techniques, the topic has remained largely inaccessible to students and the typical manager. With methods proven in the MBA courses taught by the author at Columbia and Stanford Business Schools, this book presents the basic concepts of pricing and revenue optimization in a form accessible to MBA students, MS students, and advanced undergraduates. In addition, managers will find the practical approach to the issue of pricing and revenue optimization invaluable. Solutions to the end-of-chapter exercises are available to instructors who are using this book in their courses. For access to the solutions manual, please contact [email protected].

Book excerpt: Loyalty Programs have evolved over years turning into unique business units, responsible for producing an important source of revenue for airlines. However, despite their contribution to the business, the lack of knowledge on the impacts of giving away rewards to loyal customers may lead to suboptimal decisions, harming bottom line results. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology to model and measure the net revenue impacts of award passengers as they integrate to current airline revenue management optimization practices. By modeling an award demand using the Passenger Origin Destination Simulation tool, it was possible to understand the impacts on airlines' main metrics compared to an environment without these passengers, and to define a baseline scenario based on current airline industry data, to analyze the impacts of different RM strategies. A methodology was proposed to identify and quantify three main effects seen when allowing award passengers into the current RM optimization. The Award Revenue accounts for the economic benefit for the airline of each award passenger. Displaced Revenue is the ticket revenue loss due to the displacement of paid passengers. And, the Sell Up effect measures the change in average paid fare as a result of the introduction of this new demand. Differences between the real economic benefit to the airline of award passengers and the value that the RM optimizer uses for assigning their availability were introduced to measure the net award revenue impact. Results showed that at award valuations higher than the lowest fare, airlines are able to increase their total revenues due to higher award revenue and lower displaced ticket revenue. This outcome was consistent for all RM Schemes and demand levels examined.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value of revenue management to the airlines has been amply demonstrated, both by industry experience and in simulation studies of the reservation process. However, there have been no attempts to determine if the benefits of seat inventory control are specific to the competitive market setting in which it is instituted. Furthermore, previous theoretical research has not considered whether interactions of the control methods of rival carriers may affect both the total revenue improvement attainable in the market and how these gains are shared by individual carriers. This thesis uses a modeling approach created by the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group to address these questions. The Passenger Origin / Destination Simulator combines a demand model framework with a set of routines which implement the basic forecasting and inventory control functions of airline revenue management. The Boeing simulation system is implemented in the thesis through the development of a generic fare product structure, passenger behavioral attributes, and assumptions on demand composition. Within this Operational Competitive Simulation Environment, the effect of competition on the value of revenue management is explored in simulation experiments with three classes of scenarios. In these scenarios, the gains from leg-based inventory control are assessed under varying competitive conditions, including the magnitude and distribution of passenger demand, carrier frequency share, relative departure timing, and route network design. From the simulation results, it is apparent first that inventory control innovation always improves carrier and aggregate market revenues-competition along the dimension of revenue management is not a zero-sum game from the carriers' perspective. A signal contribution of the experimental research has been the finding that the revenue dividend from inventory control derives largely from the sale of higher-yield fare products to leisure and discretionary business passengers, and only marginally at the expense of those carriers with a less advanced control capability. Additionally, the relative changes in revenue due to different control methods are indeed influenced by other competitive forces operative in the market.
