Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals of the Edinburgh Stage: With an Account of the Rise and Progress of Dramatic Writing in Scotland In the process of selection, I have, as was inevitable, experienced much difficulty; and I am fully conscious that, though I have taken the utmost care to do full justice to every aspect of my subject, I may yet be accused of sins both of omission and commission; for every reader brings an individual standard of taste to the judgment of an author, and what may interest one will doubtless be tedious to others, who in their turn will be disposed to yawn over the pet topics of the first. I have, however, striven (and I hope to some extent successfully) to furnish the table of my ordinary with adue regard to all sorts of appetites, as well as to the fact that the vast amount of ground to be gone over inevitably restricted me to representative features in the History of the Edinburgh Stage. Portions have previously appeared in print here and there; but these have been much amplified with new matter; and, so far as I am aware, the book, as it now stands, is the only one dealing with the generality of Scottish Sports on the same lines. I trust it will be found both interesting and useful, as illustrative of varied phases of the habits, manners, and customs of byegone generations of Scotsmen of all ranks and classes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes of the Stage, or Dramatic Table-Talk in Theatrical History Mr Ross soon tired of his managerial cares; and, in a fit of disgust and disappointment, he let the theatre for three years to Mr Foote. That gentleman engaged a first-rate company, and the result was, that, after paying all expenses, he was the gainer at the end of the season of a clear 1000. But, Foote having concerns of more importance in London, to which it was necemary he should devote his whole attention, speedily retired from the management, and gave over his lease to Messrs Digges and Bland, who had possession of it for some years. It was afterwards rented by Mr Corrie, then by Mr Wilkinson, and afterwards by Mr John Jackson, the historian of the Scottish stage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Press and the People is the first full-length study of cheap print in early modern Scotland. It traces the production and distribution of ephemeral publications from the nation's first presses in the early sixteenth century through to the age of Burns in the late eighteenth. It explores the development of the Scottish book trade in general and the production of slight and popular texts in particular. Focusing on the means by which these works reached a wide audience, it illuminates the nature of their circulation in both urban and rural contexts. Specific chapters examine single-sheet imprints such as ballads and gallows speeches, newssheets and advertisements, as well as the little pamphlets that contained almanacs and devotional works, stories and songs. The study demonstrates just how much more of this literature was once printed than now survives and argues that Scotland had a much larger market for such material than has been appreciated hitherto. By illustrating the ways in which Scottish printers combined well-known titles from England with a distinctive repertoire of their own, The Press and the People transforms our understanding of popular culture in early modern Scotland and Britain more widely.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Halidon Hill: A Dramatic Sketch, From Scottish History Though the Public seldom takes much interest in such communications, (nor is there any reason why they should, ) the Author takes the liberty of stating, that these scenes were commenced with the'purpose of contributing to a miscellany pro jected by a much esteemed friend. But instead of being confined to a scene or two as intended, the work gradually swelled to the size of an inde pendent publication. It is designed to illustrate military antiquities, and the manners of chivalry. The Drama (if it can be termed one) is in no par ticular either designed or calculated for the stage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Rise and Development of Presbyterianism in Scotland Throughout the whole history of the Reformed Church in Scotland one of the most outstanding features will be found to be the overwhelming desire to maintain the independence of the Church from all secular control, and the most characteristic feature of the disputes which went on during the reigns of the Stewart Kings (especially James VI and I, and Charles I), was the failure of those Monarchs to appreciate the Scottish sentiments Of Patriotism, Protestantism and Freedom.
