Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Cigarette This is the more strange when one considers 'the scope of the cigarette industry and the arguments that it has aroused. There is no state in the Union in which the cigarette has not been the object of legislation; there is no village so small but the cigarette has entered the lists of its local controversies. For nearly half a century the manufacture of cigarettes has been one of the leading indus tries oi the United States. By leaps of millions. Mrs. Alfred Mellon was the Countess de St. Valerie, and John Billington was her son. In the Lyceum revival Miss Ellen Terry played Mrs. Mellon's part, and her son the young Count, which gave great actuality to the scenes in which they appeared. My appetite was as good as it is now, and I worked as cheerfully and certainly harder. To some slight extent, I believe, I experienced the same pains in my boyhood, before I smoked, and I am not an absolute stranger to them yet. They were most frequent in my smoking days, but I have no other reason for charging them to tobacco. Possibly a doctor who smoked himself would have pooh-poohed them. Nevertheless, I have lit my pipe, and then, as I may say, hearkened for them. At the first intimation that they were coming I laid the pipe down and ceased to smoke -until they had passed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cigarette-Maker's Romance, And, Khaled, a Tale of Arabia Should they care? Their work is done, they have been rewarded or punished, paid with praise and gold or mulcted in the sum of their reputation and estate. Famous or infamous, in honour or in disrepute, in riches or in poverty, they have reached the end of their time, they are worn out, the world will have no more of them, they are worthless in the price-scale of men, they must be buried out of sight and they will be forgotten out of mind. The beginning is the same for all, and the end also, and as for the future, who shall tell us upon what basis of higher intelligence our brief passage across the stage is to be judged? Why then should the present trouble our vanity so greatly? And if our play is of so little importance, why should we care whether the scenery is romantic instead of commonplace, or why should we make furious efforts to shift a Gothic castle, a drawbridge, a moat and a waterfall into the slides occupied by the four walls of a Munich tobacconist's shop 2. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning a century, Pushing Cool reveals how the twin deceptions of health and Black affinity for menthol were crafted—and how the industry’s disturbingly powerful narrative has endured to this day. Police put Eric Garner in a fatal chokehold for selling cigarettes on a New York City street corner. George Floyd was killed by police outside a store in Minneapolis known as “the best place to buy menthols.” Black smokers overwhelmingly prefer menthol brands such as Kool, Salem, and Newport. All of this is no coincidence. The disproportionate Black deaths and cries of “I can’t breathe” that ring out in our era—because of police violence, COVID-19, or menthol smoking—are intimately connected to a post-1960s history of race and exploitation. In Pushing Cool, Keith Wailoo tells the intricate and poignant story of menthol cigarettes for the first time. He pulls back the curtain to reveal the hidden persuaders who shaped menthol buying habits and racial markets across America: the world of tobacco marketers, consultants, psychologists, and social scientists, as well as Black lawmakers and civic groups including the NAACP. Today most Black smokers buy menthols, and calls to prohibit their circulation hinge on a history of the industry’s targeted racial marketing. In 2009, when Congress banned flavored cigarettes as criminal enticements to encourage youth smoking, menthol cigarettes were also slated to be banned. Through a detailed study of internal tobacco industry documents, Wailoo exposes why they weren’t and how they remain so popular with Black smokers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from To My Cigarette As the infantile me lay in its soft cradle, sucking its little pink toes, a mother probably stood over it dreaming lavender dreams of a future - a future of rose leaves and honey. Then something happened. A storm perhaps, with black clouds and much thunder. The lightning flashed! The mother searched for her coddled babe, and the light revealed what was: a small, frail, tired body, and a delicatessen store, and customers - always customers. The lavender dream was smeared with mud. Perhaps there were tears then. I have forgotten. But it has come to pass that I have learned much, and among my learnings this fact glistens: mud is good, for out of it grows beautiful flowers and songs. Such flowers as could not take root in silver sands; such songs as could not be sung on paths of rose leaves with golden drips of honey. I have seen it. There are feet which tread the silver sands. What do they feel? What do they know of sensation? I would thank Thee today, Lord, for the storm with black clouds and much thunder. Let me lie down in the mud. Let me suffer that I may know the joy of a cigarette and a song. They do not know these things. They who tread the silver sands. They have never experienced "The tear that enjoyment may gild with a smile, And the smile that compassion can turn to a tear!" They only know life is very sweet, and when they die they are going to heaven. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cigarette-Maker's Romance Tm: inner room of a tobacconist's shop is not perhaps the spot which a writer of fiction would naturally choose as the theatre of his play, nor does the inventor of pleasant romances, of stirring inci dent, or moving love-tales feel himself instinctively inclined to turn to Munich as to the city of his dreams. On the other hand, it is by no means certain that, if the choice of a stage for our per formance were offered to the most contented among us, we should be satisfied to Speak our parts and go through our actor's business upon the boards of this world. Some would prefer to take their pro petties, their player's crowns and robes, their aspiring expressions and their finely expressed aspirations before the audience of a larger planet; others, perhaps the majority, would choose, with more humility as well as with more common sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Merchants of Death: The American Tobacco Industry During my time as surgeon general, I've been given many complex assignments - the Baby Doe issue, organ transplants, care for the aged, and now aids. But one issue was waiting for me when I arrived in this position, and it's been part of my daily agenda for the past seven years. That issue is smoking. During all this time, I've been in the forefront of the campaign to educate all Americans about the dangers of using tobacco. At first, I had the assignment because it belonged to my office. But now, after being immersed in the data for a number of years, and after closely observing just how the tobacco industry works, I feel a personal responsibility to continue working on this issue.
