Young readers can enjoy this celebrated classic as a full-sized board book, perfect for read-alouds of all kinds and a great gift for the holiday season. In 1962, a little boy named Peter put on his snowsuit and stepped out of his house and into the hearts of millions of readers. Universal in its appeal, this story beautifully depicts a child's wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. This big, sturdy edition will bring even more young readers to the story of Peter and his adventures in the snow. Ezra Jack Keats was also the creator of such classics as Goggles, A Letter to Amy, Pet Show!, Peter’s Chair, and A Whistle for Willie. (This book is also available in Spanish, as Un dia de nieve.) Praise for The Snowy Day: “Keats made Peter’s world so inviting that it beckons us. Perhaps the busyness of daily life in the 21st century makes us appreciate Peter even more—a kid who has the luxury of a whole day to just be outside, surrounded by snow that’s begging to be enjoyed.” —The Atlantic "Ezra Jack Keats's classic The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, pays homage to the wonder and pure pleasure a child experiences when the world is blanketed in snow."—Publisher's Weekly

Book excerpt: "The Snow-Image: A Childish Miracle" is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, first published in 1851 as part of his collection titled "A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys." The story is a charming and imaginative tale that combines elements of fantasy, morality, and childhood innocence. The narrative revolves around a brother and sister, Violet and Peony, who live in a small New England town. One winter day, the children decide to build a snowman in their garden. However, instead of a traditional snowman, they create a snow-sister who comes to life through some inexplicable and magical event. The snow-sister, named Lily, becomes a lively and enchanting companion for the siblings. As the story unfolds, the children experience the joys and challenges of having a snow-sister who is a blend of the magical and the ephemeral. The tale explores themes of imagination, the transient nature of childhood, and the consequences of meddling with the natural order of things. Hawthorne's "The Snow-Image" combines his characteristic style of romanticism with moral allegory. The story captures the essence of childhood wonder and the fleeting nature of innocence, while also cautioning against the dangers of trying to grasp the intangible or tampering with the boundaries between the natural and supernatural. Overall, "The Snow-Image: A Childish Miracle" is a delightful and thought-provoking short story that appeals to readers of all ages with its blend of whimsy and moral depth.

Book excerpt: Veteran ski writer Porter Fox captures the 8,000-year-old sport of skiing, the miracle of snow and the truth of how climate change could wipe out both in the next 75 years. The narrative follows the unlikely rise of skiing from prehistoric Norwegian hunters to nobility in the Alps in the 1800s to present-day freeriders on the vaunted slopes of the Rocky Mountains. Fox talks to alpinists about the allure and mysticism of the sport and to scientists about climate change and its effect on snowultimately finding a story far larger than the demise of skiing. Fox uses primary interviews and evidence, mixed with scientific studies, to explain exactly how and when the Great Melt will play outand the groundswell that is rising up to stop it. DEEP provides firsthand accounts from skiers and scientists who are mapping a way to mitigate climate change, reduce human impact on our planet and repair the water cycle. As it turns out, their efforts to save snow and ice might end up saving the world.

Book excerpt: Snow Flowers is a rare study by one of the 1,300 Hungarian Jewish inmates who were "eased out" by the SS to Junkers Company to produce airplane parts in Markkleeberg, Germany. Working conditions and profits shed light on slave labor establishments. Describing prisoners' ways of coping, their spiritual world addresses the question of how it was possible to live in the camp. A recurring theme is the experience of the author and her teenage sister. The 250 French political resistance fighters in the camp shared the death march and the anguish of the Allied bombing. Russian soldiers bent on sexual exploitation were the first disappointment after liberation. Homecoming and life of the survivor are recounted in the concluding chapters. The eight years of research on this book was prompted by the query of a Markkleeberg school teacher. German archival documents, songs, diaries written in the camp, and the testimonies of 110 fellow survivors provide a collective and a personal narrative. The book is part of a traveling exhibit, "The Forgotten Women of Buchenwald." Dr. Stessel is a retired librarian from The New York Public Library.
