Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of France It Often happens that those of us who live in great cities do not know our next door neighbors. In the great world it is very much the same and we know little or nothing about our neighbors. Hundreds of years ago a French writer called us his next neighbor. It was impossible, he said, to write about France without also writing about England. That is very true, for during hundreds of years the history of the two countries mixed and mingled. Yet in spite of that Jacques Bonhomme and John Bull have gone on liv ing side by side knowing little of each other's history, understanding little of each other's ways. For during hundreds of years France and England were deadly enemies, and Englishmen cared little about the history of France. They thought that they knew enough about Frenchmen when they knew how to fight them. But those days have long gone past, and now Jacques Bonhomme is not only our next neighbor, but our very good friend. That being so, British boys and girls are no longer con tent to know nothing about this friend, and several years ago I got a letter from a little English boy. I like that book, he said, and I wish you would write one just the same, only about France, because we can't find anything nice about France. Since then I have received many such letters both from British boys and girls and from their cousins in America. I promised them all that some day they should have the book they asked for. They were not very pleased with that promise, I think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Gaul was much larger than France is to-day, although north, south, and west France has the same boundaries now as Gaul had in the far-off days of which I am going to tell you. What these boundaries are, many a geography lesson will have shown. But, lest you have forgotten, take a map of Europe, and you will see that on the north France has to protect her the English Channel, on the south she is guarded by the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, while on her west roll the waters of the Atlantic. These mountains and waters were also the bulwarks of ancient Gaul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French History for English Children The country which we now call France was not always called so, nor were the people who live in it always called the French. When it is first mentioned, which is in old Latin books written more than 1800 years ago, it is called Gallia, or Gaul, and the people are spoken of as Gauls. Gaul was in some respects the same as France is now, and in some respects very different. It was the same, or nearly the same, in its mountains, rivers, and some of the chief towns it was different in its roads, fields, villages, and, more than all, in the people who lived in it. 'when I say that some of the towns were the same, I do not mean that they look the same now as they did then, but that the Gauls had towns in many of the places where the French now have them, and that they have lasted with almost the same names ever Since. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Stories of France The child needs the background of history as an aid to the interpretation of his experience and for the understanding of current events. In our cosmopolitan life, since we are in close touch with all peoples and are constantly hearing about them, there is need at least of the simplest elementary facts in the history of the great nations. The French people have held such a central position in thefworld's affairs, and have contributed so much to civilization, that the young student should at an early stage possess himself of the outlines Of their history. He is then enabled to put together the past and present Of that interesting country and to view the one in the light of the other. Then, too, the fact that French is the first foreign language which American children are expected to study is another valid reason for placing before them in its most interesting form the main facts of French history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out to Win: The Story of America in France I am not writing this preface for the conscious fool, but for his self-deceived brother who considers himself a very wise person. My hope is that some persons may recognise themselves and be provided with food for thought. They will usually be people who have contributed little to this war, except mean views and endless talk. Had they shared the sacrifice of it, they would have developed within themselves the faculty for a wider generosity. The extraordinary thing about generosity is its eagerness to recognise itself in others. You find these untravelled critics and mischief-makers on both sides of the Atlantic. In most cases they have no definite desire to work harm, but they have inherited cantankerous prejudices which date back to the American Revolution, and they lack the vision to perceive that this war, despite its horror and tragedy, is the God-given chance of centuries to re-unite the great Anglo-Saxon races of the world in a truer bond of kindness and kinship. Representative fi'eedom, that great political result of modern times, was as little the effect of human providence, as the great physical discoveries that have con tributed with it to change the face of civilization. Had not England preserved the boon more by a devoted attachment to old institutions than by any legislative' skill, it is to be feared that not even all our modern ingenuity could have invented a durable constitution. If the French, then, are to be blamed, it is more for fickleness than servility; and even this censure will be rendered lighter by considering the causes that led to the different fate of liberty in the two countries.
