Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of English Kings, According to Shakespeare A little sketch leads up to the story of the second Richard; a glance at his famed ancestor, the Black Prince, in the act of winning his spurs; a look toward the English people of those days as they appeared to the clear vision of Chaucer, of the author of Piers the Plowman, of that rare old chronicler Sir John Froissart. Thereafter each story is a prelude to the one that follows; as, for instance, in telling the tale of Richard II much more than a beginning is made upon that of his successor. At the opening of each story there is a looking back to get the leading string well in hand. The world believes Shakespeare is its greatest dramatist, and, as possessing the profoundest insight, its best teacher of the science of human nature. If teaching by example is history, he is also one of the ablest of historians. These English plays, at least so much of them as are contained in this book, may well be a part of any coarse of general reading. Its perusal by the young, at odd times and at even times, regularly and as a "stop-gap," will hold open the doors into two great empires of thought - English history and Shakespeare. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far more than any professional historian, Shakespeare is responsible for whatever notions most of us possess about English medieval history. Anyone who appreciates the dramatic action of Shakespeare's history plays but is confused by much of the historical detail will welcome this guide to the Richards, Edwards, Henrys, Warwicks and Norfolks who ruled and fought across Shakespeare's page and stage. Not only theater-goers and students, but today's film-goers who want to enrich their understanding of film adaptations of plays such as Richard III and Henry V will find this revised edition of Shakespeare's English Kings to be an essential companion. Saccio's engaging narrative weaves together three threads: medieval English history according to the Tudor chroniclers who provided Shakespeare with his material, that history as understood by modern scholars, and the action of the plays themselves. Including a new preface, a revised further reading list, genealogical charts, an appendix of names and titles, and an index, the second edition of Shakespeare's English Kings offers excellent background reading for all of the ten history plays.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Hudson Shakespeare: King Richard the Second The text of this edition of [ ag Rickard Me Second is based upon a collation of the First Quarto the seven teenth century Folios, the Globe edition, the Cambridge (w. A. Wright) edition of 1891, and that of Delius As compared with the text of the earlier editions of Hudson's Shakespeare, it is conservative. Exclusive of changes in spelling, punctuation, and stage directions, very few emenda tions by eighteenth century and nineteenth century editors have been adopted; and these, with the more important varia tions from the First Folio, are indicated in the textual notes. These notes are printed immediately below the text, so that a reader or student may see at a glance the evidence in the case of a disputed reading, and have some definite under standing of the reasons for those differences in the text of Shakespeare which frequently surprise and very often annoy. Such an arrangement should be of special help in the case of a play universally read and very often acted, as actors and interpreters seldom agree in adhering to one text. A con sideration of the more poetical, or the more dramatically effective, of two variant readings will often lead to rich re sults in awakening a spirit of discriminating interpretation and in developing true creative criticism. In no sense is this a textual variorum edition. The variants given are only those of importance and high authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plays of Shakespeare: King Henry Vi, Second PartShakespeare was not the only dramatist in Eliza beth's reign who could write vigorous lines of dramatic poetry: It does not at all follow that in an Old play to which Shakespeare may have contributed, all the best lines were of his writing. It was not by the mere writing of good verses that Shakespeare grew to be the master-poet of the world; and when he revised these plays on the most desolating Of our English civil wars, he had not reached the fulness of his power. He was simply helping to lay stress upon the miseries of civil war, at a time when many Englishmen began to dread that there might be civil war again, arising out of rival claims to the throne after the death Of Queen Elizabeth.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: King John, a history play by William Shakespeare, dramatises the reign of John, King of England (ruled 1199–1216), son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and father of Henry III of England. It is believed to have been written in the mid-1590s but was not published until it appeared in the First Folio in 1623. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.
