Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Belfagor in Literature and Folk-Lore The fourth tale of the second night is, however, told by Signor Benedetto of Previse. The Devil, weary of the continual complaints of the husbands who reach his domain against their wives, determines to make trial of the commodities of the married life. He assumes the form of a rich and handsome young man, calls himself Pancrazio Stornello, and marries Silvia Balastro. His best man was Gasparino Bencie. A few days after the wedding Pancrazio tells his wife that she must ask, once and for all, for whatever she desires in clothing, jewellery, etc., but having received her request must never repeat it. With the aid of her mother she draws up a long list of the things that excite feminine cupidity. These he at once gives her, with a warning against further demands. Notwithstanding this, as fashions change, Silvia finds that for a certain festivity she has nothing to wear. The husband a second time supplies all her desires, and again warns her. But a third time she finds herself appealing to him. He gives her what she wishes, and, conceiving a violent dislike, abandons her for ever. Meantime, gasparine, who is a gambler and trickster, has gone to Malfi, where one of his unpaid creditors takes a curious revenge. The Duke has become possessed by an evil spirit, who is no other than our friend Pancrazio celebrating hi release from the cares of matrimony. The creditor tells the Duke that Gasparine is an accomplished exorcist, and the unlucky gamester is commanded, on pain of death, to expel the demon. It is in vain that Gasparine disclaims the powers attributed to him. He tries his hand, and in conversation with the demon finds that it is old crony Pancrazio, who. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk-Lore and Fable: AEsop, Grimm, Andersen; With Introductions, Notes and Illustrations Still more recent, both in kind and in date, are the W onde stories of modern manufacture represented here by the tales o. Hans Christian Andersen. This nineteenth-century Dane had c marvelous knack of entertaining children by repeating old folk tales of the type collected by Grimm; and his success in this led him on to attempt inventing new ones. The new ones were suc cessful, too; but though the incidents were often suggested by traditional stories, Hans Christian Andersen's finished products are to be regarded as a form of modern fiction worked out under the influence of more or less primitive folk-tales. It would have been easy, especially from Kennedy, to have made up a volume entirely filled with Grimm's Goblins a la Celtique. But one can have too much even of that very good thing, and I have therefore avoided as far as possible the more familiar formula of folk-tale literature. To do this I had to withdraw from the English-speaking Pale both in Scotland and Ireland, and I laid down the rule to include only tales that have been taken down from Celtic peasants ignorant of English. I have acted on Moliere's principle, and have taken what was good wherever I could find it. Thus, a couple of these stories have been found among descendants of English immigrants in America; a couple of others I tell as I heard them myself in my youth in Australia. One of the best was taken down from the mouth of an English Gipsy. I have also included some stories that have only been found in Lowland Scotch. I have felt justified in doing this, as of the twenty-one folk tales contained in Chambers' Popular Rhymes of Scot land, no less than sixteen are also to be found in an English form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Circles: Tales and Legends of Giants, Dwarfs, Fairies, Water-Sprites, and Hobgoblins It belonged to the powerful Swabian duke Frederick of Hohenstaufen, whose young and valiant son loved this the best of all his father's proud castles, and Often left his uncle's Splendid palace to hunt in its forests, or to look down from its lofty oriel window on the blooming plain below. His father and uncle indeed missed him sadly. His clear blue eye, and the cheerful expression Of his noble countenance, seemed to the two grave and war-weary men so gladdening to look upon, that they were always unwilling to let him leave them. But the young Frederick used to beg them so earnestly to grant him the freedom of the forest for just this once, that father and uncle smilingly granted him permission, though this once was Often repeated. SO it happened the autumn of that year when Bernard of Clairvaux passed through Germany, calling prince and people in words Of burning eloquence to aid in the deliverance of the Holy Sepulchre. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
