Book excerpt: Timed to publish with the opening of the Statue of Liberty Museum, this is Lady Liberty's untold story of her building, restoration, and iconic place in the world as brought to life through the fascinating lens of archival images, ephemera from the museum's collection, and today's most compelling photography--restored and resplendent against the New York City skyline. Following Rizzoli's acclaimed series with the September 11 Memorial and Museum--The Stories They Tell and No Day Shall Erase You--we now are partnering with the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation to publish this official book on the Statue of Liberty. The material from the book will be drawn from the collections and archives that will be on display in the brand new Statue of Liberty Museum--opening in May 2019 The Statue of Liberty is more than a monument. It is a symbol of freedom that draws more than four million visitors annually from around the world. Officially named "Liberty Enlightening the World," the statue was a joint effort between America and France to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. The book follows the story as told in the new Museum--from its conception and creation to its restoration in 1986 to Lady Liberty's place as a shining icon to the world.

Book excerpt: In response to a congressional request, GAO addressed allegations by a Department of the Interior employee regarding the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, specifically: (1) whether the project is meeting its goals for fundraising and restoration; (2) how the project operates; and (3) federal oversight of the project. GAO found that: (1) as of March 1986, the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation was short of its fundraising goal by only $18 million; (2) restoration of the statue is nearing completion and the main building on Ellis Island should be completed in 1988; (3) contrary to Interior's original plans, the Foundation took over the actual fundraising and contracting for the restoration; (4) Interior failed to properly manage the project in the first few years but had no significant problems; and (5) Interior reviewed promotional materials used in fundraising and conducted periodic reviews of financial and operational reports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The campaign to restore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island was the first major effort to solicit private money for the rehabilitation of a government site. This book chronicles that campaign, from its inception through the selection - and later firing - of Lee Iacocca as chairman, the fundraising effort that ultimately exceeded its goal by $100 million, and the final celebration in 1986 that involved four days of unprecedented hoopla. Ross Holland focuses on the feasibility of public-private cooperation, tracing the project's history as only an insider could. He recalls the roles of career bureaucrats and the Reagan administration, examines the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Island, and the old immigration station at Ellis Island, and documents the poor judgments that led to huge cost increases at all three sites.

Book excerpt: The Statue of Liberty is an awesome visual journey that begins with the fantastic proposal of a French professor to give the United States a monument to commemorate the Revolutionary War alliance between the thirteen colonies and France. It documents the gift's taking symbolic form of the ancient goddess of liberty and its designation as the tallest metal statue in the world. Highlights include Liberty's construction history, her changing symbolism over the years, and her use in popular advertising and political activism. Her upraised arm has saluted scores of ships as they have passed by. Her dignity has welcomed Americans returning home from foreign parts and has given hope to newcomers seeking a fresh beginning in the land of liberty.
