Book excerpt: Stories of vision and conviction, passion and persistence, struggles and setbacks of six individuals behind the startups that became major players in their domain. Entrepreneurs ― from the Hindi heartland to Ivy League B-Schools and a college drop-out ― who were convinced that their ideas offered a better value proposition than all existing products and services. Uncommon stories of common individuals. These are no super heroes or geniuses or heirs of super rich families or the 'lucky ones', rather they are the men who made mistakes, suffered deceit and setbacks, and fought against all odds to come up triumphant. Each of the stories is from a different field and presents a different face, yet the soul remains the same - ability to make things happen. Conviction, passion, willingness to take risks, hard work, perseverance, and team building remain the underlying thread in each story. "What makes this book good is that the stories are not about business heirs, but about common people who took a risk, made a start and reached their goals." — Hindustan Times "The authors have presented six inspirational stories in an episodic format. The narrative moves like cinematic shots from one stage to another, from one struggle to another to the final victory." — The Tribune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it take to be an entrepreneur? Are there any guiding rules to be one? Are entrepreneurs as charismatic and intellectual as their larger-than-life image seems to be? 'The Startup Diaries' covers the exhaustive journey of six young entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, whose achievements by any yardstick make the most inspiring stories for today's generation. The book gives the reader a realistic picture of how new-age startups are being built in India. This book has covered every significant incident in each entrepreneur's life - from conceiving the idea to executing it, from committing mistakes to achieving laurels, from being funded to incurring losses, from approaching the first customer to building the brand. It also throws light on the prevailing ecosystem that exists in this country to support and promote entrepreneurship. While presenting every aspect of a start up in detail, this book does not seek to glorify entrepreneurs, but rather seeks to emphasize that entrepreneurs are not necessarily super heroes or gifted individuals; neither do they belong to affluent financial backgrounds nor do they have extraordinary qualifications. The journeys that this book takes you through are those of people who are passionate, resilient and persistent and have created businesses with an eye on the future. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice There’s no right way to keep a diary, but if there’s an entertaining way, David Sedaris seems to have mastered it. If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party—lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs. These diaries remind you that you once really hated George W. Bush, and that not too long ago, Donald Trump was just a harmless laughingstock, at least on French TV. Time marches on, and Sedaris, at his desk or on planes, in hotel dining rooms and odd Japanese inns, records it. The entries here reflect an ever-changing background—new administrations, new restrictions on speech and conduct. What you can say at the start of the book, you can’t by the end. At its best, A Carnival of Snackery is a sort of sampler: the bitter and the sweet. Some entries are just what you wanted. Others you might want to spit discreetly into a napkin.

Book excerpt: The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage is a 15th-century grimoire, or book of magic, that includes instructions on how an individual can make contact with their Holy Guardian Angel. Few occultists have dared to follow the instructions, known as the "operation," hidden within the text. Fewer yet have been successful. Even the famous Aleister Crowley failed to complete it. Over a six-month period in 1977, Ramsey Dukes attempted the Abramelin operation. The Abramelin Diaries is his account of what transpired when he attempted to contact his Holy Guardian Angel. It provides a retrospective commentary on what the operation did for Dukes, along with its value and significance. It also includes a brief history of The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage and its magical tradition. This is a book for serious occultists only.

After spending more than thirty years behind the lens—working for National Geographic, Time, Life, and Sports Illustrated—Joe McNally knows about light. He knows how to talk about it, shape it, color it, control it, and direct it. Most importantly, he knows how to create it...using small hot shoe flashes. In The Hot Shoe Diaries, Joe brings you behind the scenes to candidly share his lighting solutions for a ton of great images. Using Nikon Speedlights, Joe lets you in on his uncensored thought process—often funny, sometimes serious, always fascinating—to demonstrate how he makes his pictures with these small flashes. Whether he’s photographing a gymnast on the Great Wall, an alligator in a swamp, or a fire truck careening through Times Square, Joe uses these flashes to create great light that makes his pictures sing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete collection of the diaries of Nella Last 'I can never understand how the scribbles of such an ordinary person ... can possibly have value...' So wrote Nella Last in her diary on 2 September 1949. More than sixty years on, tens of thousands of people have read and enjoyed three volumes of her vivid and moving diaries, written during the Second World War and its aftermath as part of the Mass Observation project - and the basis for BAFTA-winning drama Housewife 49 starring Victoria Wood. The Diaries of Nella Last, brings together into a single volume the best of Nella's prolific outpourings, including a great deal of new, unpublished material from the war years. Capturing the everyday trials and horrors of wartime Britain and the nation's transition into peacetime and beyond, Nella's touching and often humorous narrative provides an invaluable historical portrait of what daily life was like for ordinary people in the 1940s and 1950s. Outwardly Nella's life was commonplace; but behind this mask were a penetrating mind and a lively pen. As David Kynaston said on Radio 4, Nella Last 'will come to be seen as one of the major twentieth century English diarists.'

Book excerpt: A major literary event—the long-awaited publication of George Orwell's diaries, chronicling the events that inspired his greatest works. This groundbreaking volume, never before published in the United States, at last introduces the interior life of George Orwell, the writer who defined twentieth-century political thought. Written as individual books throughout his career, the eleven surviving diaries collected here record Orwell’s youthful travels among miners and itinerant laborers, the fearsome rise of totalitarianism, the horrific drama of World War II, and the feverish composition of his great masterpieces Animal Farm and 1984 (which have now sold more copies than any two books by any other twentieth-century author). Personal entries cover the tragic death of his first wife and Orwell’s own decline as he battled tuberculosis. Exhibiting great brilliance of prose and composition, these treasured dispatches, edited by the world’s leading Orwell scholar, exhibit “the seeds of famous passages to come” (New Statesman) and amount to a volume as penetrating as the autobiography he would never write.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The publication of the diaries of successive generations of the Grove family is of considerable importance. Spanning more than a century, from 1809 to 1925, and described by one scholar as 'like a Jane Austen novel, but for real', they chart the rise of a Wiltshire/Dorset border family from county gentry to aristocratic Victorian grandees, before finally tracing the much steeper trajectory of the family's decline." "The Grove family home was Ferne House, near Shaftesbury. And it is at Ferne in 1809 that the eighteen-year-old Harriet Grove began this remarkable series of diaries. But Harriet was no ordinary diarist, for her later attempts to scratch out references to 'my dear Bysshe' testify to her affair with her cousin, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, with whom she was then deeply in love." "In 1811 the diary of her older sister Charlotte takes up the narrative. Charlotte's entire life was spent within walking distance of Ferne. Gossip adds spice to a rural world that is as measured and unchanging as the parson's wife she became. The third diarist, her nephew Thomas, was cast in a very different mould. Captain of dragoons, baronet, member of parliament, master of Ferne, Thomas effortlessly absorbed the delusions of grandeur of the Victorian heyday. His diaries span the years 1855 to 1897, ultimately recording the collapse of British agriculture and a financial crisis that brought the family to the brink of ruin." "The diaries of his daughter-in-law, Agnes, which run from 1882 to 1925, bear the imprint of the Whig aristocracy. Born a daughter of General Pitt-Rivers and cousin of Bertrand Russell, noted for her wit and beauty, Agnes Grove's passionately held beliefs in women's rights and her long friendship with Thomas Hardy give her diaries a resonance that brings her gloriously to life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: This book uses diaries written by ordinary British people over the past two centuries to examine and explain the nature and extent of everyday mobilities, such as travel to school, to work, to shop or to visit friends, and to explore the meanings attached to these mobilities. After a critical evaluation of diary writing, the ways in which mobility changed over time, interacted with new forms of transport technology, and varied from place to place are examined. Further chapters focus on the roles of family and life course, gender, income and class, and journey purpose in shaping mobilities, including immobility. It is argued that easy and frequent everyday mobilities were experienced by most of the diarists studied, that travellers could exercise their own agency to adapt easily to new forms of transport technology, but that factors such as gender, class, and location also created significant mobility inequalities.
