Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phonographic Dictionary and Phrase Book An undertaking so costly in time, labor, and money as the preparation of this, the most complete phonographic dictionary and phrase-book ever published, would hardly have been entered upon had not the great utility of works of its class been abun dautly demonstrated during the half century which has elapsed since the publication of Isaac Pitman's first Phonographic and Pronouncin g Vocabulary of the English Language. That work made its first appearance in 1850, and so obvious was its im portance to learners of phonography that not fewer than seven editions of it have been published in England, several of them appearing in many distinct issues. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Phonographic and Pronouncing Dictionary of the English Language The popularity of phonography arises from 1. A general desire to expedite the process of writing, 2. The scientific basis of the Art, and 3. Its abbreviating principles. Phonography is an exposition of that branch of the general science of Acoustics which has received the special name of Phonetics, or the science of articulate and vocal sounds. Phonetics treats of the elements of speech, and their collocation into words, and is included in the general Science of Lan guage, which treats not only of the composition and analysis of words, but of their relations to each other as signs of ideas. The claims of phonography, as a system of Shorthand founded on the Alphabet of Nature, are brie y described in the Manual of Phonography, pars. 20 to 24. On its claims as embodying a system of abbreviations for some letters of frequent occurrence, in. Addition to their alphabetical signs, and as thus giving a choice of two alphabetic forms for r, w, and three for h, it seems necessary to say a few words, because this principle opens the door to a diversity of stenographic representation for some words, and casts on the writer the necessity of deciding which form is most convenient. The present work is intended to relieve him of this labor, by presenting to him, Without study, the shorthand outlines which experience has shown to be the best adapted for rapid writing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phonographic Dictionary: Containing the Reporting Outlines for Upward of Thirty Thousand Words; Embracing Every Useful Word in the Language There are two distinct theories for the formation of consonant outlines. The first, and that which has been most generally fol lowed, is to consider each word as an independent individual, and to write it with what seems to be the most facile and owing out line, irrespective of other words to which it may have relation. The other theory is to consider all words as being either primitive or derivative, and to write the derived outlines in accordance with the forms used for their respective primitives. By the first method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clarendon Dictionary: A Concise Handbook of the English Language, in Orthography, Pronunciation, and Definitions, for School, Home, and Business Use The Clarendon Dictionary was the result of an attempt to produce, in the smallest compass, a concise and at the same time complete and accu rate dictionary Of standard English that is, such English as is likely to be met with in ordinary reading, but excluding the special terminologies of art and science, rare and obsolete words, technical terms of limited use, local and dialectic words, and slang. The spelling and pronunciation are those sanctioned by the best authorities and the definitions are made as clear and accurate as possible, and as full as the limitations of the book allow. The great and increasing favor with which the book has been received, seems to justify the belief that the objects aimed at have been in a great measure attained. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Phonographic and Pronouncing Vocabulary of the English Language In deciding between two or more pronunciations, countenanced by orthoepists, or by unwritten respectable usage, that one has been chosen which, when expressed by the English Phonetic Alphabet, makes the nearest approach to the romanic spelling. In this the author has been actuated by a conviction that the written English language is now in a transition state, passing from the romanic to a phonetic orthography; and he acknowledges no other right in these matters than prescription. In unaccented syllables that are supposed to be pronounced in different ways by different persons, he has preferred to abide by romanic usage. In this no offence will be given except to extremists, whose views, if adopted, would give offence to all but them selves. To attempt to disturb the established orthography on points about which orthoepists themselves differ in opinion, would be highly injurious to the interests of Phonetic Spelling.
