Download or read book THE STABILITY OF A ROTATING LIQUID DROP. written by S. Chandrasekhar and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of a rotating drop held together by surface tension is investigated by an appropriate extension of the method of the tensor virial. Consideration is restricted to axisymmetric figures of equilibrium which enclose the origin. These figures form a one-parameter sequence. It is shown that with respect to stability, the axisymmetric sequence of rotating drops bears a remarkable similarity to the Maclaurin sequence of rotating liquid masses held together by their own gravitation. Thus, at a point along the sequence (where & = 0.4587) a neutral mode of oscillation occurs without instability setting in at that point (i.e. provided no dissipative mechanism is present); and the instability actually sets in at a subsequent point (where & = 0.8440) by overstable oscillations with a frequency F. The dependence on & of the six characteristic frequencies, belonging to the second harmonics, is determined and exhibited. (Author).

Book Synopsis An Introduction To Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics by : Michael John Thompson
Download or read book An Introduction To Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics written by Michael John Thompson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-01-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction for graduate students and advanced undergraduate students to the field of astrophysical fluid dynamics. Although sometimes ignored, fluid dynamical processes play a central role in virtually all areas of astrophysics. No previous knowledge of fluid dynamics is assumed. After establishing the basic equations of fluid dynamics and the physics relevant to an astrophysical application, a variety of topics in the field are addressed. There is also a chapter introducing the reader to numerical methods. Appendices list useful physical constants and astronomical quantities, and provide handy reference material on Cartesian tensors, vector calculus in polar coordinates, self-adjoint eigenvalue problems and JWKB theory./a
