Book excerpt: Stability of Parallel Flows provides information pertinent to hydrodynamical stability. This book explores the stability problems that occur in various fields, including electronics, mechanics, oceanography, administration, economics, as well as naval and aeronautical engineering. Organized into two parts encompassing 10 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the general equations of a two-dimensional incompressible flow. This text then explores the stability of a laminar boundary layer and presents the equation of the inviscid approximation. Other chapters present the general equations governing an incompressible three-dimensional flow, which requires the massive use of a computer. This book discusses as well the experimental studies on the oscillations of the boundary layer wherein the mean flow is affected by the presence of oscillations. The final chapter describes the concept of the stability of turbulent flows found in boundary layers, wakes, and jets. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, mathematicians, engineers, scientists, and researchers.

Book excerpt: An analytical investigation is made of the effect of wall porosity upon the stability of quasi-parallel laminar flows along plaine compliant boundaries of several types. A numerical technique is employed for solution of the coupled Orr-Sommerfeld/stress-strain/strain rate equations for incompressible, viscous fluid flowing over a porous, compliant, visco-elastic boundary. The analytical and numerical methods are described in detail. The results are compared with those of comparable situations without porosity, which, in turn, are compared with results of previous investigations, both analytical and empirical. Spatial amplification rates, velocity perturbation profiles, and Reynolds stress profiles are shown for a selected number of conditions. Basic analysis is presented for the case of parallel flow through a uniform circular cylindrical tube with similar wall characteristics. Numerical results are not presented; however, the direction of such future investigation is indicated. (Author).

Book excerpt: This volume is the collection of papers presented at the workshop on 'The Stability of Spatially Varying and Time Dependent Flows" sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (lCASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) during August 19- 23, 1985. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together some of the experts in the field for an exchange of ideas to update the current status of knowledge and to help identify trends for future research. Among the invited speakers were D.M. Bushnell, M. Goldstein, P. Hall, Th. Herbert, R.E. Kelly, L. Mack, A.H. Nayfeh, F.T. Smith, and C. von Kerczek. The contributed papers were by A. Bayliss, R. Bodonyi, S. Cowley, C. Grosch, S. Lekoudis, P. Monkewitz, A. Patera, and C. Streett. In the first article, Bushnell provides a historical background on laminar flow control (LFC) research and summarizes the crucial role played by stability theory in LFC system design. He also identifies problem areas in stability theory requiring further research from the view-point of ap plications to LFC design. It is an excellent article for theoreticians looking for some down-to-earth applications of stability theory.

Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Flow in Collapsible Tubes and Past Other Highly Compliant Boundaries was held on 26-30 March, 2001, at the University of Warwick. As this was the first scientific meeting of its kind we considered it important to mark the occasion by producing a book. Accordingly, at the end of the Symposium the Scientific Committee met to discuss the most appropriate format for the book. We wished to avoid the format of the conventional conference book consisting of a large number of short articles of varying quality. It was agreed that instead we should produce a limited number of rigorously refereed and edited articles by selected participants who would aim to sum up the state of the art in their particular research area. The outcome is the present book. Peter W. Ca rpenter, Warwick Timothy J. Pedley, Cambridge May, 2002. VB SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Co-Chair: P.W. Carpenter, Engineering, Warwiek, UK Co-Chair: TJ. Book excerpt: A detailed look at some of the more modern issues of hydrodynamic stability, including transient growth, eigenvalue spectra, secondary instability. It presents analytical results and numerical simulations, linear and selected nonlinear stability methods. By including classical results as well as recent developments in the field of hydrodynamic stability and transition, the book can be used as a textbook for an introductory, graduate-level course in stability theory or for a special-topics fluids course. It is equally of value as a reference for researchers in the field of hydrodynamic stability theory or with an interest in recent developments in fluid dynamics. Stability theory has seen a rapid development over the past decade, this book includes such new developments as direct numerical simulations of transition to turbulence and linear analysis based on the initial-value problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently there was no uniform stability theory. Different approaches to stability problems had been developed in the different branches of mechanics. In the field of elasticity, it was mainly the so called static method and energy method which were used, while in the field of dynamics it was the kinetic method, which found its perfect expression in the theory of Liapunov. During the last few decades there has been a rapid development in the general theory of stability, stimulated, for example, by the investigations of H. ZIEGLER on elastic systems subject to non-conservative loads, and by the problems arising in aeroelasticity which are closely related to those introduced by ZIEGLER. The need was felt for kinetic methods which could also be used in investigating the stability of deformable systems. Efforts were made to adapt such methods, already known and developed in the stability theory of rigid systems, for application in the stability theory of continuous systems. During the last ten years interest was focused mainly on the application of a generalized Liapunov method to stability problems of continuous systems. All this was done in attempts to unify the various approaches to stability theory. It was with the idea of encouraging such a tendency, establishing to what extent a uniform physical and mathematical foundation already existed for stability theory in all branches of mechanics, and stimulating the further deve lopment of a common stability theory, that a IUTAM-Symposium was devoted to this topic.

Book excerpt: Experimental Hydrodynamics for Flow around Bodies explains complex novel experimental methodologies to solve a wide range of important flow problems in industry and research. The book starts by examining the fundamental physical laws necessary for the optimization of techniques for hydro-aeromechanics, heat engineering, and other disciplines related to flow. The reader is then provided with detailed explanations of novel experimental methods, along with the results of physical research. These results are also necessary for the construction of theoretical models that provide improved descriptions for numerous problems in various scientific fields. Frequent discussions, examples of practical applications throughout the text, and foundational, theoretical materials help a range of readers engage and apply these methods to problems in fields including drag reduction, noiseless movement, optimal maneuvering, intense heat transfer, control of separated vortices, wind power, economical energy consumption, and more. Provides instructions on the set up of innovative experiments for drag reduction that will be of great interest to researchers in aerospace, marine and automotive engineering Describes, in detail, a variety of novel experiments to investigate boundary layer flow, together with experimental data that can be used with computational models Assists with bio-inspired hydrodynamic design by providing models of a waving fin mover and investigations of analogs of hydrobiont skin covers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of the incompressible, boundary-free, parallel flow whose velocity profile is the cosine is considered. A two-dimensional cellular flow is also considered. The method of small perturbations is used to linearize the equations of motion about the basic flow. The boundary condition imposed is that the perturbation shall be bounded in space. The time dependence of the perturbation, assumed exponential, is chosen so that stability depends on the imaginary part of a parameter, c, which is considered to be the eigenvalue. Other parameters of interest are the Reynolds number, R, and, for the parallel flow, the wave number of the perturbation, alpha. Formulating the eigenvalue equation as the vanishing of an infinite determinant aids in calculating the neutral curve near the critical Reynolds number. The curve intersects the R axis at Rc. For large values of R it approaches alpha = 1 asymptotically. The eigenvalue spectrum consists of an infinity of bands, separated by small gaps, lying along the imaginary axis of the c plane.
