Book Synopsis Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography by : D. Carment
Download or read book Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography written by D. Carment and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition of the Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography brings together the entries from the original three volumes, published in 1990, 1992 and 1996. The Dictionary spans the period from the early British and French explorers of the Northern Territory coast to the mid 1990s and aims to provide a broad reflection of life in the Territory rather than focusing on eminent public figures. In some cases this has meant that some subjects are included about whom relatively little is known. Authors come from the widest possible cross-section of the community and there is a considerable range of writing styles. The principal interest of the volume is the Northern Territory. In all cases, the Territory experience of subjects, however eminent they might have been elsewhere, is thus the focal point of entries. This volume is available on CD (ISBN 9780980384697) and in this limited paperback edition.
Book Synopsis The New Coastal History by : David Worthington
Download or read book The New Coastal History written by David Worthington and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a pathway for the New Coastal History. Our littorals are all too often the setting for climate change and the political, refugee and migration crises that blight our age. Yet historians have continued, in large part, to ignore the space between the sea and the land. Through a range of conceptual and thematic chapters, this book remedies that. Scotland, a country where one is never more than fifty miles from saltwater, provides a platform as regards the majority of chapters, in accounting for and supporting the clusters of scholarship that have begun to gather around the coast. The book presents a new approach that is distinct from both terrestrial and maritime history, and which helps bring environmental history to the shore. Its cross-disciplinary perspectives will be of appeal to scholars and students in those fields, as well as in the environmental humanities, coastal archaeology, human geography and anthropology.

Book Synopsis Early Irish Cinema by : Denis Condon
Download or read book Early Irish Cinema written by Denis Condon and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines early and silent cinema and its contexts in Ireland, 1895-1921. It explores the extent to which cinema fostered a new way of looking in and at Ireland and the extent to which the new technology inherited forms of looking from the image-producing cultural practices of the theatre, tourism, and such public events as state occasions, political protests, and sports meetings. It argues that before cinema emerged as an independent institution in the late 1910s, it was comprehensively intermedial, not only adapting to the presentational strategies of such forms as the fairground attraction, the melodrama, and the magic lantern lecture, but actually constituting these forms and altering them in the process. In locating cinema in relation to popular and elite culture during a key period of Irish history, it draws in particular on surviving films and photographs; articles and illustrations in newspapers, magazines, and trade journals; contemporary accounts; and official documents. Working against approaches that see early cinema as a precursor to the so-called 'classical' cinema of the 1920s onwards, it provide its readers with a wealth of contemporary material that allows them to see early cinema in its own terms as an evolving (audio-) visual form.

Book Synopsis A Wee Nip at the 19th Hole by : Richard Mackenzie
Download or read book A Wee Nip at the 19th Hole written by Richard Mackenzie and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 1998 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful celebration of one of golf's great time-honoured traditions - the St Andrews caddie - written by the Caddie Manager at the historic St Andrews Old Course and a former caddie himself. For over 200 years caddies have been walking around St Andrews, the most famous piece of golfing land in the world, advising players of vastly different abilities not only on which club to take but also on the type of shot required and, most importantly on the Old Course, exactly the line on which to play. In his evocative and fascinating book, Richard Mackenzie reminds us how caddies first came to St Andrews, the way in which they have added so much to the folklore of the links and the great contribution which they have made and continue to make to the game of golf for those who visit 'The Home of Golf'. It's a remarkable treasure trove of intriguing insights into the social history of caddies interspersed with timeless anecdotes and vivid feature articles. With legendary characters such as 'Trap Door' Johnson, Stumpie Eye and 'Poot' Chisholm ('With good porridge and a wee nip, you're all right for life'), A Wee Nip takes the reader back to the roots of the game, reliving a host of cherished memories along the way.
