Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spraying Outfits The second consideration is how to market the crops with a profit. Economy in production is under control by the farmer and can be figured very closely. Scientific care of the trees is the first step in economy. It not only results in more perfect fruit, which means an economy in grading and packing, but increases the production per acre to the maximum. Labor is becoming more of a problem every year, and such machines as the power sprayer, mechanical grader, etc., not only help greatly to reduce expenses, but are a necessity in the larger orchards. Grading and packing are two important points that many farmers underestimate. Fruit that is properly graded and packed always brings top prices. In nearly every case, properly graded and attractively packed fruit will bring a higher price than fruit of the same quality that is not so carefully handled. Are such that they are certain to attract attention in any section of the country and they are especially impor tant in West Virginia where many orchards are situated on rather steep slopes. Which render the use of a spray outfit difficult. In most commercial orchards it is also an item of considerable expense to secure an adequate and convenient water supply. While the dusting method has these attractive features, the questions of more vital interest and importance are: First, Is the cost of this method actually less than that of spraying, and second, Are the dust materials effective 1n controlling orchard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stationary Spray Plants in California (a Progress Report) The development of spraying equipment has gone forward slowly and conservatively. Eastern manufacturers, in the main, have. Kept step with the western manufacturers of spraying equipment, par ticularly as regards the portable gasoline power outfits. However, it remained for the western coast to devise and put into operation a new idea in spraying, namely, the stationary spray plant. Users of portable Sprayers have often had some difficulty in spraying at exactly the proper time on account of muddy ground in the orchard. The ordinary portable spraying outfit, loaded with 200 gallons of liquid, weighs at least a ton. Obviously, such a load cannot be easily transported through an orchard just after a heavy rain or after a thaw. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his new book, Professor Martin Robertson - author of A History of Greek Art (CUP 1975) and A Shorter History of Greek Art (CUP 1981) - draws together the results of a lifetime's study of Greek vase-painting, tracing the history of figure-drawing on Athenian pottery from the invention of the 'red-figure' technique in the later archaic period to the abandonment of figured vase-decoration two hundred years later. The book covers red-figure and also work produced over the same period in the same workshops in black-figure and other techniques, especially that of drawing in outline on a white ground. The book is intended as a companion volume to Sir John Beazley's The Development of Attic Black-figure (originally published in 1951 by California University Press), and as an examination and defence of Beazley's methods and achievements. This book is a major contribution to the history of Greek vase-painting and anyone seriously interested in the subject - whether scholar, student, curator, collector or amateur - will find it essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Fashion featured in black-letter broadside ballads over a hundred years before fashion magazines appeared in England. In the seventeenth century, these single-sheet prints contained rhyming song texts and woodcut pictures, accessible to almost everyone in the country. Dress was a popular subject for ballads, as well as being a commodity with close material and cultural connections to them. This book analyses how the distinctive words and images of these ballads made meaning, both in relation to each other on the ballad sheet and in response to contemporary national events, sumptuary legislation, religious practice, economic theory, the visual arts and literature. In this context, Clare Backhouse argues, seventeenth-century ballads increasingly celebrated the proliferation of print and fashionable dress, envisioning new roles for men and women in terms of fashion consumption and its importance to national prosperity. The book demonstrates how the hitherto overlooked but extensive source material that these ballads offer can enrich the histories of dress, art and culture in early modern England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paris has been the international capital of fashion for more than 300 years. Even before the rise of the haute couture, Parisians were notorious for their obsession with fashion, and foreigners eagerly followed their lead. From Charles Frederick Worth to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, Christian Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent, fashion history is dominated by the names of Parisian couturiers. But Valerie Steele's Paris Fashion is much more than just a history of great designers. This fascinating book demonstrates that the success of Paris ultimately rests on the strength of its fashion culture – created by a host of fashion performers and spectators, including actresses, dandies, milliners, artists, and writers. First published in 1988 to great international acclaim, this pioneering book has now been completely revised and brought up to date, encompassing the rise of fashion's multiple world cities in the 21st century. Lavishly illustrated, deeply learned, and elegantly written, Valerie Steele's masterwork explores with brilliance and flair why Paris remains the capital of fashion.
