Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the American Red Cross: A Chapter From the Autobiography of Nathaniel Carter Deane And my God speaks unto me by his big red rising morning and the evening setting sun, shining thru a veil of red upon the sufferings of the World, when by his silence yet he speaks by this sign of the Blood Red Cross, We shall conquer; that when my call is made and I stand waiting at the death's vale, and give my name; then when my mind is filled with Death's Fear, standing up there at the Midway, when all seems dull and dark and drear, looking up as I start to climb - There I will pause and re-hear the moans of the suffering of the World and re see the scene of the unfortunate in their agonies of Death, Hell, Dying Man. The bright light of high noon day speaks out clear to me from out the heavens - the Master light - to follow up 'till I reach up there; Then the change will come to me, as the folds of my. Heaven's veils will open out, and wide and clear - then I look within. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Story of the American Red Cross in Italy (Classic Reprint) by : Charles M. Bakewell

This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the American Red Cross in Italy American reader something of that finer and more dis criminating appreciation of Italian character that our workers in the field have invariably gained. The story of the Red Cross in Italy I shall tell in a strictly impersonal way. There will be no attempt to ap portion praise, and, indeed, as far as it is possible to do so, names will be omitted altogether. This procedure is not only in harmony with the spirit of modesty that has characterized the work of the Commission from the begin ning; it is also dictated by necessity. Only the Keeper of all records could justly distribute credits, and there is no doubt that on His books some of our humblest work ers will come in for the highest meed of praise. I have in mind one Red Cross worker who has been buried for ten months in what to the casual tourist would appear to be one of the most Godforsaken towns in Italy poor, dilapi dated, far from the railroad and out of touch with the world. Here, cut off from all communication with her kind, she has performed her modest task, taking no vacation, daily on the job from early morning until late in the evening. Happy in her work, she has come to love the simple people with whom her lot is cast, and should you commiserate her, she will reply with a smile: Human nature is pretty much alike wherever you find it. By her tact and devotion she has won the affection of the people and filled with courage and a new loyalty hearts that were wavering and made of a disloyal town one of the most loyal. There is no glory and no fame in obscure service like this. But such a faithful servant desires no glory. She is the spirit of the Red Cross in the field, and she has many names, many which I know, many that I could not give. Therefore I name her not. Let me simply, once for all, clean the score by paying tribute to her wherever in Italy she may be hidden, and to all the army of Red Cross workers in Rome and in the field, high and low, whose devotion has made the work in Italy a success. Book excerpt: "Blood, Sweat and Tears: An Oral History of the American Red Cross, is the story of the modern-day Red Cross told through the voices of twenty-nine current and former Red Cross paid and volunteer staff from all parts of the country. The stories range from that of a World War II veteran who credits the Red Cross packages with keeping him alive when he was a POW in Germany to Americans who became heroes simply because they signed up for a Red Cross course and were later able to save a life, to volunteers who spent an intense year in Vietnam cheering up soldiers. We hear from the staffer who pulled people from an automobile before the medics arrive; the mom who saved a neighbor's child when he was drowning; the nurse who took off from her job to go half-way around the world to distribute food and supplies to victims of the tsunami that struck the day after Christmas 2004."--BOOK JACKET.
