Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Place, and Other Essays Swift is most charming when he is feigning to complain of his task Here is such a stir and bustle with this little MD of ours I must be writing every night; 0 Lord, 0 Lord I must go write idle things, and twittle twattle. These saucy jades take up so much of my time with writing to them in the morn ing. Is it not a stealthy wrong done upon Mrs. Dingley that She should be stripped of all these ornaments to her name and memory? When Swift tells a woman in a letter that there he is writing in bed, like a tiger, she should go gay in the eyes of all generations. Book excerpt: The Spirit of Place and Other Essays by Alice Christiana Thompson Meynell THE SPIRIT OF PLACE With mimicry, with praises, with echoes, or with answers, the poets have all but outsung the bells. The inarticulate bell has found too much interpretation, too many rhymes professing to close with her inaccessible utterance, and to agree with her remote tongue. The bell, like the bird, is a musician pestered with literature. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tower of the Mirrors: And Other Essays on the Spirit of Places I have always been fond of that story of Virgil, when he had turned wizard in the Middle Ages how he built for himself a tower - whose name survives in a church at Rome - with mirrors whereby you could see whatever happened in the world's length and breadth. This Tower of the Mirrors I have at last seen with my mortal eyes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Stories are embedded in the world around us; in metal, in brick, in concrete, and in wood. In the very earth beneath our feet. Our history surrounds us and the tales we tell, true or otherwise, are always rooted in what has gone before. The spirits of place are the echoes of people, of events, of ideas which have become imprinted upon a location, for better or for worse. They are the genii loci of classical Roman religion, the disquieting atmosphere of a former battlefield, the comfort and familiarity of a childhood home. Twelve authors take us on a journey; a tour of places where they themselves have encountered, and consulted with, these Spirits of Place.

Book excerpt: The first three decades of the twentieth century saw the largest period of immigration in U.S. history. This immigration, however, was accompanied by legal segregation, racial exclusionism, and questions of residents' national loyalty and commitment to a shared set of "American" beliefs and identity. The faulty premise that homogeneity--as the symbol of the "melting pot"--was the mark of a strong nation underlined nativist beliefs while undercutting the rich diversity of cultures and lifeways of the population. Though many authors of the time have been viewed through this nativist lens, several texts do indeed contain an array of pluralist themes of society and culture that contradict nativist orientations. In The Pluralist Imagination from East to West in American Literature, Julianne Newmark brings urban northeastern, western, southwestern, and Native American literature into debates about pluralism and national belonging and thereby uncovers new concepts of American identity based on sociohistorical environments. Newmark explores themes of plurality and place as a reaction to nativism in the writings of Louis Adamic, Konrad Bercovici, Abraham Cahan, Willa Cather, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Charles Alexander Eastman, James Weldon Johnson, D. H. Lawrence, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and Zitkala-Sa, among others. This exploration of the connection between concepts of place and pluralist communities reveals how mutual experiences of place can offer more constructive forms of community than just discussions of nationalism, belonging, and borders.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gift of the Spirit: A Selection From the Essays of Prentice Mulford There are portions of Biblical history which he appears to accept implicitly, quite simply and Sincerely, and there is an aspect of the scheme of Christianity, not essentially unorthodox, to which he would appear to subscribe. If in Other respects he is somewhat disposed to place constructions of the symbolical order on that which in rigid schools is regarded literally, to allegor1se and moderate by interpretation, he does not even then of necessity give offence to those schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Spirit: A Study of the Spiritual Nature of Man, and the Presence of God, With a Supplementary Essay on the Logic of Hegel One of the most deeply suggestive events in nature is the reawakening of life in the spring-time, with the sense of fresh beauty and newness of being which it brings, as though spring had never arrived before. The same landscape lies around us, the same grass-plots and flower-beds are there. Once more the familiar changes take place, from early March with its pro mising winds to the sunny skies and budding life of April and the wondrous green beauty of May. Once again the birds arrive, to make the heart glad and awaken us with their morning song. Again the beau ties of late spring blend with the customary scenes of early summer. Everywhere regularity reigns. Yet it is not nature's orderliness which then impresses us but the new life astir in things. No mere reference to what nature was yesterday, last year, or the year before, can explain this miracle. The great fact is the presence of life, life, that perennial power Which annuls time, transforms the familiar into the new, and compels ancient nature to. Be born again.
