Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet Union and Egypt, first published in 1993, sheds new light on Soviet policy towards the Middle East after 1945. It seeks to uncover and analyse the events leading to the eventual domination of Egypt and other Arab countries by the Soviet Union. Soviet penetration into the region can only be understood by tracing the roots and motives of Soviet policy after the Second World War. The strengthening of Soviet influence resulted from a process of gradual political and ideological development in Egypt. Special attention is drawn to domestic and foreign developments in both countries, and the book makes extensive use of recently declassified documents and primary sources.

Download or read book Red Star on the Nile written by Alvin Z. Rubinstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet-Egyptian relationship after the June War of 1967 was a new one for both countries, and its consequences were of global importance. Drawing on all available Soviet and Arab materials, Alvin Rubinstein develops the concept of influence as an analytical tool and explores in comprehensive fashion the diplomatic, military, political, and economic aspects of the influence relationship between the two nations in recent years. The author's approach is chronological, analytical, and oriented toward the issues. He finds that the relationship has been fundamentally asymmetrical in aims and accomplishments. Egypt's remarkable comeback after the June War would not have been possible without Soviet aid, but Moscow benefited primarily in the context of the Soviet-American strategic rivalry in the Middle East, and only peripherally in terms of influence over Egypt. Considering broader Soviet-Third World relationships, the author shows that there is no demonstrable correlation between intensified interactions and influence, that an extensive presence is no assurance of influence, and that Soviet influence can seldom be exercised at will in the absence of an ability to project Soviet military power directly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after World War II the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union developed as the Cold War. Both powers attempted to extend their spheres of influence whilst at the same time accusing each other of creating instability and threatening world peace. The Middle East was one of the important regions where both attempted to increase their own influence and undermine that of their rival. The Middle East had long been under Western influence but the establishment of Isreal with Anglo-American support alienated the Arabs. The Isreali aspiration towards a purely Jewish state and their refusal, despite international pressure, to resettle Palestinian refugees was endorsed by the United States as necessary for Isreali security. The United States support for Isreal drove President Nasser to move towards the Eastern bloc which raised the temperature of great power rivalry in that zone and nearly led to direct confrontation in 1973. United States policy of containment was first threatened by the Czech-Egyptian arms deal of 1955 with unexpected revolutions in Iraq, in 1958, and Libya in 1969 giving the Soviet Union the opportunity to further develop their footing in the area. United States efforts to contain Soviet influence proved fruitless when the Arab states in the region refused to join in military alliances sponsored by the United States. United States policy was perceived as endorsing every Isreali move from making the Palestinians homeless in 1948 to the forceful evacuation of the P.L.O. from Lebanon in 1382. The United States was successful in so far as Egypt was removed from the Soviet orbit, but the Camp David agreement isolated Egypt from the rest of the Arab world. The Palestinian Problem remains unsolved and, so long as it remains, so also does the danger of direct confrontation between the super powers in this region.
