Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the creation of a new economy in the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1945. The Red Army defeated the Germans in World War II with equipment produced by that economy and not with masses of untrained men as has been often argued. The Soviet weapons were produced in factories designed and built under the direction of American engineers in the 1930s. Also, the Weimar Republic played a part in the creation of the Red Army by providing aviation and tank training schools and technical assistance to the developing armaments industry. Dunn argues that if France had been invaded by the Allies in 1943 rather than in 1944, the post-war world would have been less advantageous to the Soviet Union.

Book excerpt: "John Barber and Mark Harrison explore how the political and economic system of the USSR stood up to the German invasion which penetrated deep into Soviet territory, and to the colossal burdens of total war. They examine the ways in which the Soviet leaders rallied their people and their resources, and show how the Soviet people themselves lived and worked in wartime. They give an account of the role played by the USSR's British and Amerian allies; and they try to assess how far the terrible experience of war changed the social, multinational and economic order of the Soviet Union, and influenced its long-term political future."--Page 4 of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a definitive new account of the Soviet Union at war, Alexander Hill charts the development, successes and failures of the Red Army from the industrialisation of the Soviet Union in the late 1920s through to the end of the Great Patriotic War in May 1945. Setting military strategy and operations within a broader context that includes national mobilisation on a staggering scale, the book presents a comprehensive account of the origins and course of the war from the perspective of this key Allied power. Drawing on the latest archival research and a wealth of eyewitness testimony, Hill portrays the Red Army at war from the perspective of senior leaders and men and women at the front line to reveal how the Red Army triumphed over the forces of Nazi Germany and her allies on the Eastern Front, and why it did so at such great cost.

Book excerpt: While the capitalist world was experiencing The Crash and the beginnings of the Depression, a massive investment program initiated the Soviet Union's transformation from a peasant country to an industrial power. Here is a nearly day-by-day account of the establishment of political institutions only now being challenged by Gorbachev's reforms. Complements the two previous volumes, but is designed to stand on its own. Well-printed (in China) on acidic paper. Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Book excerpt: "Chapters explore key aspects of the Soviet organization of the war, and shed fresh light on the transformation achieved by Stalin and his generals, who faced the prospect of utter defeat in 1941. The structure, tactics and operation of the Red Army through the war years are examined in close detail. The real impact of partisans and resistance fighters is reconsidered as is the role of women and the influence of propaganda. And the authors explore the economic and industrial policies -- and achievements -- that made victory on the battlefields possible"--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stalin’s Red Army entered World War II as a relatively untried fighting force. In 1941, with the launch of Operation Barbarossa, it joined battle with Hitler’s army, the most powerful in history. After a desperate war of attrition over four years, the Red Army beat the Nazis into defeat on the Eastern Front and won lasting fame and glory in 1945 by eclipsing the military might of the Third Reich. This book begins with a review of the historical background of the Red Army in the years leading up to the outbreak of war in 1939, and follows with a discussion of the major themes in the development of Soviet forces during the "Great Patriotic War" that ensued in 1941. The Red Army’s organizational structures are examined, from high command down to divisional level and below; Soviet combat arms and weaponry are also described in detail.

Book excerpt: An important reevaluation of World War II on the Eastern Front Detailed look at how the Soviet Union created more new divisions in a few months than the U.S. did during the entire war More than 60 tables list losses, tank and weapon production, and unit formation, with special emphasis on rifle and tank divisions and brigades When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, the German Army quickly annihilated a major portion of the Red Army. Yet the Red Army rebounded to successfully defend Moscow in late 1941, defeat the Germans at Stalingrad in 1942 and Kursk in 1943, and deliver the deathblow in Belarus in 1944. Dunn examines these 4 battles while explaining how the Soviets lost a third of their prewar army yet returned to beat one of the most highly trained and experienced armies the world has ever seen.
