Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love and wrath. Sovereignty and responsibility. Victory and suffering. Some of the truths we read in the Bible seem to be in opposition to each other. We naturally tend to gravitate towards a side, but when we lose sight of one truth in order to protect the other, we are in danger of becoming proud, creating division, and diminishing our faith. In this compelling, inspiring, and at times provocative book, Adam Mabry urges us to stop taking sides and refuse to participate in tribalism by mapping out a way to hold in tension truths that we so often divide over. You’ll discover how our joy and our witness rest on us learning to hold to all that the Scriptures teach and growing in virtue as we do. You’ll learn how to wrestle with all that the Scriptures say, to embrace mystery, to listen closely, and to speak with clarity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sovereignty and Fatherhood of God: A Discourse, Preached During His Visit to England To understand this subject clearly, we must care fully distinguish between the rul'e Of God as a Sovereign, and the design Of God as a Father; in other words, between God's will considered as His decree, and considered as His desire. The will of God as a Sovereign is always done. It is His un deniable will, not merely that physical and meta physical laws should be obeyed, but that the laws Of human freedom and personal responsibility shouldbe rigidly carried out in all their consequences. Nor have we any reason to suppose that the per turbations and conflicts introduced into the moral world by the element of free will, can by the con ditions of the case extend beyond a certain limit, a limit corresponding in the moral world to the bounds of disorder fixed for the irregularities and disturbances which belong to the unmoral or mate rial universe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the following pages an attempt has been made to examine anew in the light of God's Word some of the profoundest questions which can engage the human mind. Oth¬ers have grappled with these mighty problems in days gone by and from their labors we are the gainers. While mak¬ing no claim for originality the writer, nevertheless, has endeavored to examine and deal with his subject from an entirely independent viewpoint. We have studied diligently the writings of such men as Augustine and Acquinas, Calvin and Melancthon, Jonathan Edwards and Ralph Erskine, Andrew Fuller and Robert Haldane.* And sad it is to think that these eminent and honored names are almost entirely unknown to the present generation. Though, of course, we do not endorse all their conclusions, yet we gladly acknowledge our deep indebtedness to their works. We have purposely refrained from quoting freely from these deeply taught theologians, because we desired that the faith of our readers should stand not in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. For this reason we have quoted freely from the Scriptures and have sought to furnish proof texts for every statement we have advanced. Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Book excerpt: The Sovereignty of God is a religion classic by English Bible teacher Arthur Pink who articulates and relates the Biblical truths of God's absolute Sovereignty with the main goal to exalt God solely from the pages of Scripture. Pink attempts to draw closer the tension between the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man, an eternal question that remains debated even though it's seemingly plainly taught in the Scripture. The author's focus is on the divine side of the issue, defining God's sovereignty and presenting the different spheres that it works and operates. Further on he turns to the tension between the sovereignty of God and human will and responsibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is God sovereign with respect to creation? Does creation affect God? Does God suffer or change because of creation? If so, how is this related to Christology? Why have these questions been so controversial in evangelical theology, even costing some people their jobs? This book is a collection of lectures given to the Forum for Evangelical Theology at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Six theologians answer the questions above from a variety of perspectives. They draw on resources including the church fathers, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, Jurgen Moltmann, process theology, and open theism. In the process of answering the question, does God suffer? each theologian also illustrates how responding to this subject requires an examination of other crucial evangelical issues, such as how we read Scripture and what it means to proclaim that God is love. Although the writers answer these questions in a variety of ways, the hope is that engaging in this conversation together can help evangelicals and all Christians to speak more faithfully of our sovereign God.

Pink tries to answer such questions by showing that God is in control in creation and salvation, how that works with humanity's free will and finally how we should react in these dark times.

It is a doctrine for all biblical Christians. In this updated and expanded edition of Chosen by God, Sproul shows that the doctrine of predestination doesn’t create a whimsical or spiteful picture of God, but rather paints a portrait of a loving God who provides redemption for radically corrupt humans. We choose God because he has opened our eyes to see his beauty; we love him because he first loved us. There is mystery in God’s ways, but not contradiction.

Book excerpt: In the last few years, 9/11, a tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and many other tragedies have shown us that the vision of God in today's churches in relation to evil and suffering is often frivolous. Against the overwhelming weight and seriousness of the Bible, many Christians are choosing to become more shallow, more entertainment-oriented, and therefore irrelevant in the face of massive suffering. In Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, contributors John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, Steve Saint, Carl Ellis, David Powlison, Dustin Shramek, and Mark Talbot explore the many categories of God's sovereignty as evidenced in his Word. They urge readers to look to Christ, even in suffering, to find the greatest confidence, deepest comfort, and sweetest fellowship they have ever known.

Book excerpt: The sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man has been a topic that has been fought in many theological battlegrounds over centuries past, and we know that it will continue to be fought for centuries to come. Yet God invites us with a grand calling as we look into the souls of men that are perishing without hope and without God to desire such a weighty topic to impact us by having the right view of God, a proper perspective of our relationship to God and how it should impact our daily lives. The burden of the Lord to author this book is the desire for God to do that work in the heart of the readers as we peer into the beauty and glory of God.

Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. -Psalms 139:3-5 The sovereignty of God. Actively working. Every day. In every way. And He is actively working in you - you who believe in Jesus! The Gospel of Christ, seeing God’s sovereignty within salvation and now also within our lives, this study should help you see the glory of Christ in your daily walk of faith. Salvation is not a one-time event, and I challenge conventional wisdom -- it is not solely because of your or my efforts. For it is a gift of grace through faith given by God. For beneath our faith in Jesus is God’s active working within our hearts. Now with the Holy Spirit living within us, He works daily in us to the council of His will toward, in, and through us - giving us His grace, wisdom, and comfort each day. This book, with the Bible in hand, highlights scriptures - with my comments as a flashlight - to showcase the glory of God and to help reveal to believers and seekers alike the high value of Jesus!
