Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Campus of 1929, Vol. 10 The class of 30 was no exception to this general rule, for they have just completed a most eventful year. As soon as school opened in the fall, the members met and began to plan the program for the year. Of first importance during the first semester was the Junior Midwinter Informal, which was held at the Breakfast Club on December 7. A program of songs was offered by Erma Purviance and Bob Keith, and Pendarvis' orchestra furnished music for the dancing. Decorations in the class colr ors of purple and straw added much to the festive scene, while the programs, which were carried out in a winter motif, made charming souvenirs of the evening. Credit for the way in which the dance was handled must be given to the Social Executive Committee with Helen Fitch as chairman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Collegiate, 1929 We admit the imperfections and defects of this edition, but we trust that because this is an experiment undertaken by an inexperienced staff, these defects will be overlooked by a sym pathetic public that knows the trials of a college staff that must depend upon inadequate knowledge and material for its success. If this adventure proves even a partial success, we hope to carry the idea further and believe that in doing so we may make a worthwhile contribution to the small college pub lication system. We gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of those faithful and spirited individuals who have given their services so freely that the Collegiate might be a success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Campus, 1935 There IS a certain sort of fun in pitting mental skill against a knotty problem in mathematics or philosophy; but there is a different sort of pleasure, a happiness that is really an art - the art of enjoying life and the people about one. This art of happiness is a valuable asset in one's per sonal life; moreover, it is well worth definite study in these days when social relationships within human society are being recognized as constituting one of our most serious problems. Perhaps recreation will be one of the most helpful keys to its solution. Recreation contributes to society's needs in forms to match those needs. Students, for example, are - presumably - engaged primarily in intellectual pursuits, and the strain therefore falls mainly on the nervous rather than the muscu lar mechanism. Active physical effort is thus indicated as an essential of their recreation programs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Bravely entering the East Bridgewater High School with this motto in the fall of 1925 we little knew what tasks and pleasures con fronted us. Our hearts were set on one high ideal - Success, and now upon leaving, we, the Class of '29, feel that we have reached that goal. The installation of officers was the initial and basic step towards the organization of our class. Those elected to serve during our Freshman year, were the following. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Campus, 1961 Although the fall term started in late September the real beginnings for the academic year 1960-1 can be traced back to April 17, 1960, when Franklin D. Murphy, then Chancellor-designate for ucla, arrived at LA International Airport. His was an enthusiastic greeting, for he was not an unknown quantity; his record at Kansas spoke well of him, and those who welcomed him intuited a new era for ucla. It was their suspicion and our knowledge that Chancellor Murphy's presence means a new look, a new face and a new influence on the ucla man. Southern Campus dedicates the year 1961 to a dynamic, perceptive, hopeful, young-thinking, inspiring Franklin David Murphy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chestnut Burr, 1923, Vol. 10: The Book of the Year Working under the direction of the Dean of Women in Kent are the two house mothers of Moulton and Lowry Halls, the dietitian, and the resident nurse. Together these form the Dean's Council, which meets regularly to con sider all the matters concerning the women residing in the halls. As there are about twice as many women students at Kent State living off campus as on, the Dean's major problem is to get into close touch with the women who board or live at home in Kent, or at home. In nearby towns. To accomplish this purpose, an Off Campus Women's Club has been formed, which has already done much. In November, the Dean of Women gave a tea to all the landladies of Kent who have college women living with them, that they might become better acquainted and might better understand their mutual relationships and responsibilities. During the winter term, the Dean of Women visited the houses in Kent, and made a list of approved rooming places for college women students. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microcosm, 1919, Vol. 10: The Simmons College Annual What can the graduates of older generations say to the girls who are this year leaving college? Until five years ago the Seniors passed out from a familiar, orderly round of work and vacation into what seems in retrospect a familiar and orderly world. They took up their share of the responsibilities which had been gradually passed over to women, and filled the limited places in the professions and in business left vacant for them by men. Here and there some gifted woman broke a new path and travelled farther. Their numbers steadily increased and their energy made itself felt more and more widely. But speaking largely, the problem of their work and their place in society had not fundamentally changed in twenty years and the advice of Commencement orators and baccalaureate preachers continued its cheerful monotony. The Young Woman must go out from the college gates bearing in her hands the special womanly gifts of refinement and of service. Suddenly in August, 1914, all the familiar conditions changed. Old needs multiplied and countless new needs were added. Old means proved inadequate to 1each their ends and the old ends were themselves 1apidly lost sight of. The w01ld demanded a new response to its new conditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
