For centuries Spanish tyranny denied the world access to those countries, and hardly had they shaken Off the political system that strangled their develop ment, when geographical considerations and the invention Of iron steamships placed them at a dis advantage compared with their competitors. Their commercial, and therefore their industrial and po litical progress, has been ten-fold slower than it should have been. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Supremacy, Vol. 1 of 2: The Rise and Progress of the Latin American Republics and Their Relations to the United States Under the Monroe Doctrine Occasionally a really able and keen newspaper correspondent is sent to these counties, and'his reports in all their horrible truthful ness awaken our people to some conception of the facts. If there were more of the light which emanates from such pens, there would be fewer crimes chargeable to the machete in South America. It is a dificult task to combat error and prejudice, particularly when deep-seated; and the erroneous views entertained by the people of the United States with reference to Latin America are so numerous and so imbedded in their thought that an overwhelming array Of facts is necessary successfully to attack and overcome them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South American Republics, Vol. 10 Great care is taken that the pupils in our public schools shall be well grounded in all that pertains to their own country, yet it is none the less a fact that a large majority of those pupils know almost nothing of the sister republics which lie in the southern half of our American continent. The average boy or girl in these United States knows far more of London, Paris, or Berlin than of Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, or Valparaiso; far more of peoples on the banks of the Rhine, the Volga, and the Danube than of those who dwell in the valleys of the Amazon, the Orinoco, and the Rio de La Plata; and far more of the manners, customs, superstitions, and modes of life of the in habitants of India, China, and Japan than of those of Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil. This ought not to be; and the one underlying pur pose oi this volume is to Open to the view of our older boys and girls the charm of mystery and the wealth of life hidden away in the depths of the ten interesting countries which lie almost at our doors, and whose several governments have been so largely modeled and patterned after our own. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Supremacy, Vol. 1 of 2: The Rise and Progress of the Latin America Republics and Their Relations to the United States Under the Monroe Doctrine Our people believe in justice, and in the liberty which carries the torch of civilization over the earth. They have always earnestly desired to see stable republics established in South America. They do not believe in monarchies. They believe in "a government of the people, by the people, and for the people." Our people enthusiastically upheld President Monroe when he declared that European monarchies should not extend their territory on American soil, and each succeeding administration, without exception, has striven to aid in the establishment, maintenance, and development of decent republican governments in these countries. When our State Department has seen revolutions, anarchy, and crime rampant in South America, foreigners being looted, robbed, and murdered (Americans suffering worse than any other class), infamy, perfidy, intrigue, and scoundrelism covering Spanish America as with a pall, - it has not shut its eyes to the facts. On the contrary, no father ever watched over Ins wayward offspring with more care, sorrow, and anxiety than has the beneficent government of the United States observed these countries, studying by what means it could bring order out of chaos, decency out of crime. For three quarters of a century this has been our policy, followed with patience and a spirit of philanthropy to which history affords no parallel. As one bandit government after another has appeared on the horizon of South America, our government has counselled it to exercise moderation, to walk in the paths of civilization, to respect the lives and property of foreigners; and we have stood between these so-called "governments" and the civilized powers of Europe. In spite of all that our country has done for them, the incontestable fact remains that Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Santo Domingo, Hayti, and practically all of Central America are in a worse condition to-day, politically, socially, commercially, and deeper in barbarism, than they were three quarters of a century ago. Dilettante philosophers, reactionists who are against every policy which has made the United States the peerless giant which it is, will go on shouting in behalf of our "poor oppressed Sister Republics." On such people the facts stated in the following pages will have no effect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second installment in a planned three-volume series, this book provides the first substantive review of South American rodents published in over fifty years. Increases in the reach of field research and the variety of field survey methods, the introduction of bioinformatics, and the explosion of molecular-based genetic methodologies have all contributed to the revision of many phylogenetic relationships and to a doubling of the recognized diversity of South American rodents. The largest and most diverse mammalian order on Earth—and an increasingly threatened one—Rodentia is also of great ecological importance, and Rodents is both a timely and exhaustive reference on these ubiquitous creatures. From spiny mice and guinea pigs to the oversized capybara, this book covers all native rodents of South America, the continental islands of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Caribbean Netherlands off the Venezuelan coast. It includes identification keys and descriptions of all genera and species; comments on distribution; maps of localities; discussions of subspecies; and summaries of natural, taxonomic, and nomenclatural history. Rodents also contains a detailed list of cited literature and a separate gazetteer based on confirmed identifications from museum vouchers and the published literature.
