Unfortunately I am not scientific; but, perhaps, from this very defect, I may become the more intelligible to the general reader Of the following pages, who may comprehend my simple names for simple things, rather than those of a polysyllabic character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Road From Sharpeville The south african scene, with its multiplicity of problems, is so heavily charged with emotion that it is not easy to bring to it that analytical calm which alone can help us emerge from the jungle of controversy, hate and fear. I am entirely opposed to the doctrine of extreme Afrikanerdom, of which Dr Verwoerd is the outstanding exponent; and I believe that, if unchecked, this doctrine will bring ruin to South Africa. Yet I am not prepared to concede that South Africa is a land where nature has deposited evil the way it has lodged the gold ore here. Though our situation is tragic, though evil stalks our land, it is still necessary to try to estimate those forces, historical, social and economic, which have brought about this state of affairs. To modify Burke's famous adage, a whole nation cannot lightly be indicted. And I shall adduce all the extenuating evidence, in an effort to draw a picture that is whole and rounded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My South African Year The faults I find and the holes I pick must be set down to an affectionate use of my time, and a desire to paint the scene as it is - the shadows as well as the high lights. If I were asked to sum up South Africa in the terms of my experience, I should recount At an old boys' dance at Durban, chauffeur and mistress met, and neither was confounded. Politically, I might repeat the story heard in Pretoria Club. A certain local judge was discussing with Mr. Chamberlain the latter's cool reception in South Africa after the war. Said the Colonial Secretary, aggrieved: We have given back the watch. Yes, said the other, but you have kept the chain If now we seem to be hastening to restore the chain but that is anticipating the event and the book. Besides, there is Smuts to keep an eye on the Imperial goods. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Labours and Scenes in Southern Africa The writer offers the following pages to the churches of his country as an humble contribution to their stock of knowledge relative to heathen lands. It contains a faithful record of events which have occurred within the range of his experience and observation, and supplies much that may serve to illustrate the peculiar attributes of African society. It may, he ventures to hope, tend materially to promote the study of the philosophy of missions. It will furnish both the Sage and the Divine with facts for which perhaps they were not prepared, and exhibit phases of humanity which they have not hitherto observed. It will further show that, amid circumstantial differences, there is a radical identity in the operations of human depravity, in Asia, in Polynesia, and in Africa; and that while the Gospel is the only, it is also the uniform, remedy for the distress of a world convulsed by sin, and writhing with anguish. It will present striking examples of the complete subjugation of some of the fiercest spirits that ever trod the burning sands of Africa, or shed the blood of her sable offspring. The Writer has indulged but slightly in philosophical disquisition, as he deemed it his province principally to supply facts. He leaves it with men of leisure and reflecting habits to analyze, compare, and deduce from those facts such doctrines as they supply. Indeed, little in this way can be added to the luminous works of Drs. Campbell and Harris, and Messrs. Hamilton, Noel, and others, by whom the subject of Missions has been so learnedly and eloquently illustrated. He hopes no apology will be deemed necessary for any imperfections which may appear in the preparation of his Narrative. The collocation of terms, and the polish of periods, have made but a small part of his studies. Such pursuits, he conceives, were not the objects for which he was sent to Africa, and they would have but ill comported with the circumstances in which he spent a large portion of his arduous life on that benighted continent. He feels confident that lettered men will look into the pages of an African Evangelist for things far more substantial and important than the graces of composition - an accomplishment which the Author much admires, but to which he makes no pretension. He makes his present appearance before the British public less in the capacity of an Author than of a Witness, who most earnestly desires to establish and to enforce the claims of perishing, and helpless, and all but friendless millions, for whom he has hitherto lived and laboured - whom he ardently loves, and with whom - all black, barbarous, and benighted as they are - he hopes to live, labour, and die! Inured to active habits, and unaccustomed to sedentary pursuits as the Writer has been, he has found the preparation of the present volume, in addition to the translation of the Scriptures and of other books, and the almost unremitting labours of the pulpit and the platform, an arduous undertaking. This task has been attended with a multiplicity of mental exercises have been solemn and painful, others sweet and soothing. He has been led to retrace the windings of a long and chequered pilgrimage, and to live over again much of his by-gone life. The review has, in many parts, been deeply humbling, but in all highly profitable. It has been refreshing to recount the mercies of the God whom he serves, which have been abundantly vouchsafed to him and his household in distant climes, and amid savage men. He has also ofttimes rejoiced in spirit, when he called to mind the displays of divine grace which have attended his very imperfect efforts to save the lost, and to benefit those who had no benefactor. I stayed on deck some time, as the scene was a rare one. The great ta'ble mountain back of the city inspired me with a feeling of awe, so black and grim did it appear in the bath of moonlight all about it. The shore has a sweep almost equal to the Bay of Naples and in the semi-darkness resembled it very much. I stopped in the chart-room as I came below and was much im pressed by the thought that I was at the end of the earth, and out beyond was the unknown sea. My mind reverted to my boy-time romances, and I went to sleep wondering if, some where out there upon the trackless water, old Van der Decken was still trying to drive the phantom ship against the ceaseless head winds his blasphemy had provoked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cinderella in the South: South African Tales I drank from the fair water by the temple's western approach, and sat down t0'smoke under a tree in the precincts. The big cone of the main tower was just in sight. I had seen the walls before, and was in no analytical mood; synthesis was enough for me. I took in with my delighted eyes a roofless dome worthy to be a temple of some sort, even if it were not, a blue roof that bettered mere human aspiration, debris testifying to earthly incompleteness, a broken column with its memento mori - all these were sim mering in my vision and my judgment. I half dozed until the voices of the lunch'ers began to interest me. They were doing the rounds rather hastily, lunch having cut into their time, so short at its very best. The water is standing in pools and natural depressions, and the hues of the sunrise reflected in it give a colour to the whole scene which is indescribable. The air is keen, but so extraordinarily invigorating that you gladly throw down the windows of the carriage and let it play upon you without fear Of cold. A sense of lightness which calls back childish dreams of flight possesses the body. The idea of reaching the distant ranges by a direct progress from peak to peak has not the patent impossibility that it would wear in Piccadilly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Briton or Boer?: A Tale of the Fight for Africa IN the following romance I have attempted to answer in the form of an essay in prophetic fiction the question which forms the title of the story: Is the Briton or the Boer, the Englishman or the Dutch Afrikander, going to rule South Africa?' My answer, however near to or far from the actual truth it may prove to be, has been thought out and formulated in the country which, as I, with many others of longer and wider experience in South African affairs than I possess, firmly believe will be the scene of the inevitable struggle for absolute and necessary supremacy, and amidst daily converse with the people who will be the chief actors in the drama. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outspan: Tales of South Africa The charm Of the life is indescribable, and none who have tasted it ever weary Of it, ever forget it, or cease to feel the longing to return when once they have quitted it. It was in '91, the year after the pioneers cut their way through the Bush, with Selous to guide them, and occupied Mashonaland. We followed their trail and lived again their anxious nights and days, when they, a small handful in a dense Bush, at the mercy Of the Matabele thousands, did not know at what hour they would be pounced on and massacred.
