Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sounds and History of the German Language No apology 18 needed for an attempt to write an intro duction to the Phonetics and History of the German Language that is simple enough to be intelligible to stu dents without linguistic erudition, and at the same time sufficiently comprehensive to meet to a reasonable degree the requirements of the teacher of German. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phonetics of the New High German Language The position in which these organs are in quiet and regular breathing, wherewith no speaking can take place, is called the position of indifference (indifferenzlage). This position can also be termed organic basis (artikulationsbasis), because it forms the natural foundation for the different arti culations of the apparatus of speech. With the German or ganie basis the tongue is not so much lowered, retracted, and flattened as with the English organic basis; nor is in the former case the tongue hollowed in front. Whilst with the English the lips remain fairly inactive and are only slightly rounded, the Germans have an inclination to round them considerably and to pout them. On these fundamental differences between the German and the English organic bases chiefly depend the differences between the German and the English sounds, especially vowels; cf. 23 note 2. 37 note 2. 40 note. 43 note. 63 note 2. 67 note. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Middle High-German Primer: With Grammar, Notes, and Glossary Those who wish to acquire a sound historical knowledge of the modern phase of the language ought to possess Professor Brandt's Grammar of the German Language, published by Putnam's Sons, New York and London, 1884. It may not be out of place to state here also that an Old high-german 'primer is already in the hands of the printers, which will help to throw much light upon many! Points of Middle high-german grammar that could not be touched upon in the present book. I believe that the day is not very far distant when English students will take a much more lively interest in the study of their own and the other Germanic languages (especially German and Old Norse) than has hitherto been the case. And if this little book should contribute anything towards furthering the cause, it will amply have fulfilled its purpose.
