Book excerpt: Policymakers need to change the way they think about so-called “sophisticated investors.” The way they think about these organizations now disenfranchises the millions of ordinary people these big investors represent and makes it literally impossible to hold such big investors to account. This creates a dangerous flaw at the heart of the way financial markets are organized. This is not just abstract musing: it is demonstrably leading to poor outcomes for the ordinary people who depend on big investors. The good news is that policymakers can make a difference by applying a simple principle to “sophisticated investors”: accountability. It need not cost a lot or involve a lot of bureaucracy. They must demand that big investors, and the fund managers they hire, disclose more to the public. What they disclose must allow (truly) independent outsiders to analyze how well the big investors have performed, including how cost-effective they are. Anyone who believes in markets knows that harnessing people's self-interest helps to make markets work. If policymakers choose to enfranchise the rest of society, they will be doing just that. Vested interests - including much of the financial services sector, many big investors, and even some policymakers - will call this idea outlandish. Some will portray it as an attack on financial markets. Even observers with no vested interest may worry that it will damage markets or the economy or both. Nothing could be further from the truth. An 80-year-old parallel shows the way. This change in approach would help to ensure that financial markets serve society as a whole, rather than just the people who work in them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The go-to guide for smart REIT investing The Intelligent REIT Investor is the definitive guide to real estate investment trusts, providing a clear, concise resource for individual investors, financial planners, and analysts—anyone who prioritizes dividend income and risk management as major components to wealth-building. The REIT industry experienced a watershed event when Standard & Poors created a new Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) sector called Real Estate. Publicly traded equity REITs have been removed from Financials, where they have been classified since their creation in 1960, and have begun trading as their own S&P Sector. This separation from banks and financial institutions has attracted new investors, but REITs require an industry-specific knowledge that is neither intuitive nor readily accessible to newcomers—until now. Using straightforward language and simple example to illustrate important concepts, this book will enable any reader to quickly learn and understand the lexicon and valuation techniques used in REIT investing, providing a wealth of practical resources that streamline the learning process. The discussion explains terminology, metrics, and other key points, while examples illustrate the calculations used to evaluate opportunities. A comprehensive list of publicly-traded REITs provides key reference, giving you access to an important resource most investors and stockbrokers lack. REITs are companies that own or finance commercial rental properties, such as malls and apartment buildings. Despite historically high total returns relative to other investments, such as the Nasdaq or S&P 500 index, most investors are unfamiliar with the REIT industry, and wary of investing without adequate background. This book gets you up to speed on the essentials of REIT investing so you can make more informed—and profitable—decisions. Understand REITs processes, mechanisms, and industry Calculate key metrics to identify suitable companies Access historical performance tables and industry-specific terminology Identify publicly-traded REITs quickly and easily REITs have consistently outperformed many more widely known investments. Over the past 15-year period, for example, REITs returned an average of 11% per year, better than all other asset classes. Since 2009, REITs have enjoyed positive returns; large cap stocks and cash are the only other classes that paralleled that record. Even in 2015, a 'year of fear' related to rising rates, REITs returned 2.4%, beating most all other asset classes. REITs have a long history (over fifty years) of performance, and have entered the big leagues. If you feel like you've been missing out, don't keep missing out. Prepare yourself, and your portfolio, to benefit from the demand for REITs that have followed the creation of a Real Estate GICS sector. The Intelligent REIT Investor gives you the information you need to invest wisely and manage your real estate risk effectively. By maintaining a tactical exposure in the brick and mortar asset class, investors should benefit from the information contained in The Intelligent REIT Investor. Join the REIT world and look forward to owning stocks that will help you to sleep well at night.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Pioneering Portfolio Management shows individuals how to avoid the for-profit mutual fund industry and get better returns on their money. In Unconventional Success, investment legend and bestselling author David F. Swensen offers incontrovertible evidence that the for-profit mutual fund industry consistently fails the average investor. From excessive management fees to the frequent “churning” of portfolios, the relentless pursuit of profits by mutual fund management companies harms individual clients. Perhaps most destructive of all are the hidden schemes that limit investor choice and reduce returns, including pay-to-play product-placement fees, stale-price trading scams, soft-dollar kickbacks, and 12b-1 distribution charges. Even if investors manage to emerge unscathed from an encounter with the profit-seeking mutual fund industry, individuals face the likelihood of self-inflicted pain. The common practice of selling losers and buying winners (and doing both too often) damages portfolio returns and increases tax liabilities, delivering a one-two punch to investor aspirations. In short: Nearly insurmountable hurdles confront ordinary investors. Swensen’s solution: A contrarian investment alternative that promotes well-diversified, equity-oriented, market-mimicking portfolios that reward investors who exhibit the courage to stay the course. Swensen suggests implementing his nonconformist proposal with investor-friendly, not-for-profit investment companies such as Vanguard and TIAA-CREF. By avoiding actively managed funds and employing client-oriented mutual fund managers, investors create the preconditions for investment success. Bottom line? Unconventional Success provides the guidance and financial know-how for improving the personal investor’s financial future. “Reveals why the mutual fund industry as a whole does a disservice to the individual investor.” —Booklist “What he has to say is worth listening to.” —The New York Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you are an investment professional managing billions of dollars or an individual investor with a small nest egg, TrimTabs Investing shows you how to beat the major stock market averages with less risk. This groundbreaking book begins by comparing the stock market to a casino in which the house (public companies and the insiders who run them) buys and sells shares with the players (institutional and individual investors). TrimTabs Investing argues that stock prices are primarily a function of liquidity—the amount of shares available for purchase and the amount of money available to buy them—rather than fundamental value. Finally, it outlines the building blocks of liquidity theory and explains how you can use them to predict the direction of the stock market. “Charles Biderman, a savvy and battle-scarred veteran of the investment wars, has fashioned an intriguing approach to making money in the stock market that adroitly avoids both heavy-breathing speculation and the standard Wall Street practices that enable investors, big and small, to lose money in good markets as well as bad. Aimed at the sophisticated investor (which may or may not be an oxymoron), the book is written in blessedly straightforward prose and is a worthwhile read for anyone with an urge to have a fling at investing.--Alan Abelson Barron’s “Since the days of Joseph and Pharaoh, it has been axiomatic that the size of the grain harvest affects the level of grain prices; but today’s investors have been slow to appreciate the fact that the supply of stock shares significantly determines the level of stock prices. Biderman’s long overdue book outlines the theory and evidence behind ‘Trading Float,’ the actual—and exploitable—power behind major moves in the stock market. --Paul Montgomery CEO and CIO of Montgomery Capital Management “‘Trade as corporate execs do, not as they say.’ Charles Biderman has built an impressive list of hedge fund clients from this essential insight, and this book does a great job explaining exactly how retail investors can incorporate it into their investing.” --Eric Zitzewitz Assistant Professor of Economics, Stanford Graduate School of Business “Charles Biderman is a smart thinker, clear writer—and he offers here some very interesting ideas. This book is for the little guy who enjoys reading about money and economics, even if he doesn’t adopt the strategies offered here; and for the professional or sophisticated investor, who, to a greater or lesser degree, just might.--Andrew Tobias author of The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need

Book excerpt: Global investing isn't new. In fact, investors have been looking to overseas markets for hundreds of years, and with good reason. A global portfolio can bestow innumerable rewards on the savvy investor, yet many US investors remain woefully under-exposed to foreign equities. Despite the fact that US equity markets make up less than half of world markets, only a small portion of our investment dollars are allocated overseas. Even the most sophisticated investors have been deterred by misconceptions about the risks associated with owning foreign stocks or a lack of information about foreign markets. But the notion investment options are limited by borders is antiquated and downright detrimental to successful investing. Once considered the playground of only the ultra-rich or institutional investors, global investing is fast becoming not only possible, but a necessity, for every investor. As part of Fisher Investments Press, Own the World introduces readers to the vast advantages of seeking investment opportunities all over the planet. Own the World provides investors with tools to build a global portfolio and points out potential hurdles to avoid. It also educates readers on the nuts and bolts of foreign markets, how to easily understand them, and vehicles for investing there. By detailing the vast and currently underappreciated benefits of global investing and the distinct advantages of a global approach, as well as common pitfalls to avoid, Own the World can help readers to tread more confidently into global markets as they look to optimize their investment results.
