Book excerpt: This remarkable first novel from award-winning short fiction writer Ken Scholes will take readers away to a new world—an Earth so far in the distant future that our time is not even a memory; a world where magick is commonplace and great areas of the planet are impassable wastes. But human nature hasn't changed through the ages: War and faith and love still move princes and nations. In Lamentation, the first entry in the Psalm of Isaak series, an ancient weapon has completely destroyed the city of Windwir. From many miles away, Rudolfo, Lord of the Nine Forest Houses, sees the horrifying column of smoke rising. He knows that war is coming to the Named Lands. Nearer to the Devastation, a young apprentice is the only survivor of the city—he sat waiting for his father outside the walls, and was transformed as he watched everyone he knew die in an instant. Soon all the Kingdoms of the Named Lands will be at each others' throats, as alliances are challenged and hidden plots are uncovered. The Psalms of Isaak #1 Lamentation #2 Canticle #3 Antiphon #4 Requiem #5 Hymn At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Standing by the field, she was overcome with images and feelings of what had occurred years before in these same fields. These and other images were to haunt and torment Ruby for years until she had expressed them through her poetry. This emotional collection of poems enlivens the images and takes readers on an emotional historical journey.

Book excerpt: The Commentaries On Jeremiah, like those on The Minor Prophets, were delivered as Lectures In The Theological School At Geneva, taken down by some of the Pupils, and afterwards read to Calvin, and corrected. We find in them the production of the same vigorous and expansive mind: The Divine Oracles are faithfully explained, the meaning is clearly stated, and such brief deductions are made as the subjects legitimately warrant. Though the Lectures were extemporaneously delivered, there is yet so much order preserved, and such brevity, clearness, and suitableness of diction are found in them, that in these respects they nearly equal the most finished compositions of Calvin as proof that he possessed a mind of no common order. The Ministry Of Jeremiah extended over a large space of time from the thirteenth year of Josiah's reign till after the final overthrow of the nation; but for how long after that period, it is not known. Between the thirteenth year of Josiah and the destruction of the city and Temple, there were about forty years. This was a remarkable period, and Jeremiah nearly alone labored among the people. Their sins had been for the most part the same for a long time - for nearly two centuries, as it appears from the testimonies of his predecessors, Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, Joel, Micah, Nahum, and Zephaniah; for these seven had in this order preceded him. Zephaniah And Habakkuk were probably for a time his contemporaries, the first at the commencement, and the other near the end of his ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Has this been one lifelong and bitter lesson, of what little love can accomplish?" She asked the mask of her father. Derek, Master and defender of his people, rides with Chandra toward a friendly city in the aftermath of a victory. They will have no time to celebrate as Derek suddenly finds himself up against a foe he can't kill with a sword. Having delivered her friend and ally to a healer, Chandra contends with more than just waiting in dread: she will be faced with a part of her personal history that she never knew and the promise of a place to belong after her exile from Kensrik. But can she trust it? And they will have so little time to regroup. Alathea, masked ruler of an expanding empire, still hungers to recreate the world in her image. Dissatisfied with the delays and failures of her minions, she intends to personally oversee the final victory over her most hated foe, the "witch", Crown Princess Chandra Kenderley. Whether they battle enemies from without or within, an ensemble cast faces the fight of their lives on every part of the Continent and its inland sea. No one but Alathea has the full picture of what she's set in motion, and whether they have any chance of stopping her, nothing will ever be the same. The Masked Queen's Lament is the third book of the Gift-Knight trilogy.

Book excerpt: 1. This arresting novel raises challenging questions about the meaning of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. New insights on many aspects of early Christianity emerge from the narrative of events during the unsettled years a generation after the crucifixion. Readers will find especially thought-provoking interpretations of the apostle Paul and Mary the mother of Jesus. This story brings key tenets of theology to life in vivid form. (James M. McPherson, Ph.D,, retired professor, Princeton University and Pulitzer Prize winner.) 2. By imagining Jesus’ family and followers in the world of Judaism, Mr. Nyce questions basic assumptions of modern Christians. These are important questions and fascinating perspectives, worth discussing in any church or study group. (David Tatgenhorst, pastor St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Bryn Mawr, PA) 3. This is a gripping and compelling story about an epic moment in human history. Joe Nyce has brought the characters to life in all their grandeur and pathos. He invites the reader to re-live history with a profound spiritual purpose. (Jeremy I. Adelman, Ph.D., Professor of History Princeton University.) 4. For those with an interest in Jesus’ central message of love, self-sacrifice, and kindness above all else, Nyce’s thought-provoking narrative of the early years of Christianity will provide a rich and rewarding experience. (Herman Tull, Ph.D., Visiting Associated Professor of Religious Studies, Lafayette College) 5. Through Mary’s plaintive eyes, Joe Nyce illustrates a historically rich and thought provoking story about individuals who knew and were spiritually impacted by the life, teachings and death of Jesus. The beautiful message of love and humility is a wonderful read, especially now with societies electronic barriers. (Tim Mathews, D.Sc., mayor, East Amwell Twp. NJ) Mary’s Lament is an attempt to connect our religious struggles of faith with those who lived through the birth of our religion, and it provides a narrative walk with Jesus’s mother, brother, and sister as a way to assist us in honoring Jesus’s command to walk with him through the kingdom of God’s love. Author Joseph C. Nyce also explores through this narrative the tragic religious history of violence, presenting a fresh look at the violent beginnings of Christianity. The violence of nascent Christianity still haunts us through the barriers of belief, and we can explore this transformative time in our religious history to discover a deeper meaning of faith through imagining real persons caught up in this division of faith between two groups of people devoted to the same God and agreeing that righteousness was the way to honor him.
