Book excerpt: Recognizing the lives of the enslaved at the historic site of Mount Clare Enslaved African Americans helped transform the United States economy, culture, and history. Yet these individuals' identities, activities, and sometimes their very existence are often all but expunged from historically preserved plantations and house museums. Reluctant to show and interpret the homes and lives of the enslaved, many sites have never shared the stories of the African Americans who once lived and worked on their land. One such site is Mount Clare near Baltimore, Maryland, where Teresa Moyer pulls no punches in her critique of racism in historic preservation. In her balanced discussion, Moyer examines the inextricably entangled lives of the enslaved, free Black people, and white landowners. Her work draws on evidence from archaeology, history, geology, and other fields to explore the ways that white privilege continues to obscure the contributions of Black people at Mount Clare. She demonstrates that a landscape's post-emancipation history can make a powerful statement about Black heritage. Ultimately she argues that the inclusion of enslaved persons in the history of these sites would honor these "ancestors of worthy life," make the social good of public history available to African Americans, and address systemic racism in America. Book excerpt: The records were compiled for the Department of Archives and History of the State of Georgia. Georgia's colonial period starts with the Charter signed by King George II in 1732 and ends at the close of the Revolutionary War in 1777. Many of the colonial records have been lost due to war and neglect. During the Civil War the most important records were loaded on wagons and hauled to Charleston, SC. From there they were moved to Newbern, NC then to upper Virginia and finally to Maryland. They were not returned to Savannah until 1783 again by wagon. Wills were not considered the most important papers and did not make the wagon transfers. Some of these early records ended up in the Tower of London where they remained until 1801. The wills within this book are those that were found in trunks within the Tower of London.

Such eight-sided homes-as well as schools, churches, barns, and businesses-were popping up across the country so quickly that by 1857 over 1,000 had been built. Though the craze has long since subsided, the book that started it all remains a valuable and curious artifact of architectural history. A phrenologist by trade and eccentric Renaissance man by character, Orson S. Fowler subscribed to the principle that form follows function in architecture years before the edict was popularized by the Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. For a multitude of reasons explored at length in these pages, Fowler determined that an octagonal house provides for the maximal utilization of space and resources like heat and water. Years ahead of his time with respect to his concerns about energy efficiency, Fowler includes plans that call for central heating, running water, and "speaking tubes". Modern readers will likely be amused by his short sermon on the potential benefits of an "indoor water closet". Though Fowler himself was never trained as an architect, he supports his assertions with strong reasoning and even includes plans and instructions for designing and constructing an octagon house.
