Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the fall of the Berlin Wall is positively commemorated in the West, the intervening years have shown that the former Soviet Bloc has a more complicated view of its legacy. In post-communist Eastern Europe, the way people remember state socialism is closely intertwined with the manner in which they envision historical justice. Twenty Years After Communism is concerned with the explosion of a politics of memory triggered by the fall of state socialism in Eastern Europe, and it takes a comparative look at the ways that communism and its demise have been commemorated (or not commemorated) by major political actors across the region. The book is built on three premises. The first is that political actors always strive to come to terms with the history of their communities in order to generate a sense of order in their personal and collective lives. Second, new leaders sometimes find it advantageous to mete out justice on the politicians of abolished regimes, and whether and how they do so depends heavily on their interpretation and assessment of the collective past. Finally, remembering the past, particularly collectively, is always a political process, thus the politics of memory and commemoration needs to be studied as an integral part of the establishment of new collective identities and new principles of political legitimacy. Each chapter takes a detailed look at the commemorative ceremony of a different country of the former Soviet Bloc. Collectively the book looks at patterns of extrication from state socialism, patterns of ethnic and class conflict, the strategies of communist successor parties, and the cultural traditions of a given country that influence the way official collective memory is constructed. Twenty Years After Communism develops a new analytical and explanatory framework that helps readers to understand the utility of historical memory as an important and understudied part of democratization.

Book Synopsis From Pain to Purpose by : Luminitza C. Nichols
Download or read book From Pain to Purpose written by Luminitza C. Nichols and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Pain to Purpose is a suspenseful memoir depicting the costly commitment of a young woman to keep her faith to the end. Emboldened by an abiding love for Christ learned in the trenches of the underground church, Lumi's Christian discipleship was a costly undertaking. As the daughter of a communist party leader, she encountered bitter opposition to her faith from family, educators, and the government. At nineteen, Lumi finds herself at the harrowing epicenter of events that led to her arrest, imprisonment, and death sentence during the December 1989 anticommunist revolution. Woven into the story are romantic interests, challenges presented by peers, and a struggle with a call to ministry that made no sense for a woman. Upon the overthrow of communism, Lumi pilgrimages to an uncertain future in the United States, where she faces a different kind of prison, crueler than the communists could ever invent. From Pain to Purpose is a story of triumph birthed from a stubborn refusal to give up and the faithfulness of a God who cannot lie.

This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buryats are a Mongolian population in Siberian Russia, the largest indigenous minority. The Socialist Way of Life in Siberia presents the dramatic transformation in their everyday lives during the late twentieth century. The book challenges the common notion that the process of modernization during the later Soviet period created a Buryat national assertiveness rather than assimilation or support for the state.
