Yet they depend on an optimistic view of the human condition, Stripped of this essential ingredient, liberalism has become a hollowed-out abstraction. Tracing its effects through the media, politics and the public services, the author argues that hollowed-out liberalism has helped to produce our present discontent. Unless we stop boasting about our values and try to recover their essence, liberal society will be crushed in the coils of its own contradictions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origins and History of Consciousness draws on a full range of world mythology to show how individual consciousness undergoes the same archetypal stages of development as human consciousness as a whole. Erich Neumann was one of C. G. Jung's most creative students and a renowned practitioner of analytical psychology in his own right. In this influential book, Neumann shows how the stages begin and end with the symbol of the Uroboros, the tail-eating serpent. The intermediate stages are projected in the universal myths of the World Creation, Great Mother, Separation of the World Parents, Birth of the Hero, Slaying of the Dragon, Rescue of the Captive, and Transformation and Deification of the Hero. Throughout the sequence, the Hero is the evolving ego consciousness. Featuring a foreword by Jung, this Princeton Classics edition introduces a new generation of readers to this eloquent and enduring work.

Book excerpt: An extensive look at all the aspects of multi-natured Shiva • Explores the shamanic roots of world spirituality as exemplified by this Hindu god who shares many of the attributes of the Norse Odin and the Celtic Cernunnos • Looks at Shiva’s relation to contemporary culture, Tantra, and the dualistic religions of the West To his devotees Shiva is the entire universe and the core of all beings. Hindu myth shows him appearing at the beginning of creation as a giant pillar of fire from which this world sprang forth. Yet he is also the most approachable of gods, for he is the lover of lovers and the devotee of his devotees. Of the 1,008 names of Shiva, Pashupati, Lord of Animals, is one of the most common. His special relation to animals along with his trickster nature reveal the deep connection of Shiva to shamanism and other gods such as the Norse Odin and the Celtic Cernunnos that came out of the Paleolithic traditions. Ethnologist Wolf-Dieter Storl was first captivated by Shiva when he was in India as a visiting scholar at Benares Hindu University. In this book he invites readers to join in the lively and mythical world of Shiva, or Mahadev, God of All Gods. Shiva is a study in contrasts: As the lord of dance he loses himself in ecstatic abandon; with his consort Parvati he can make love for 10,000 years. Both men and women worship him for his ability to unite and balance masculine and feminine energies. But as the ascetic Shankar he sits in deep meditation, shunning women, and none dare disturb him lest he open his third eye and immolate the entire universe. Lord of intoxicants and poisons, he is the keeper of secret occult knowledge and powers, for which he is worshipped by yogis and demons alike. Shiva dances both the joy of being and the dance of doom--but in every aspect he breaks through the false ego to reveal the true self lying within. This is his true power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first eleven chapters of Genesis (Adam, Eve, Noah) are to the twenty-first century what the virgin birth was to the nineteenth century: an impossibility. A technical scientific exegesis of Genesis 1–11, however, reveals not only the lost rivers of Eden and the garden’s location, but the date of the flood, the length of the Genesis days, and the importance of comets in the creation of the world. These were hidden in the Hebrew text, now illuminated by modern cosmology, archaeology. and biology. The internet-friendly linguistic tools described in this book make it possible to resolve the location, the extent, and the destruction of Eden and Noah’s flood. Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Norse, Sumerian, and Sanskrit mythology are all found to support this new interpretation of Genesis. Combining science, myth, and the Genesis accounts paints a vivid picture of the genetic causes and consequences of the greatest flood of the human race. It also draws attention to the acute peril our present civilization faces as it follows the same path as its long-forgotten, antediluvian ancestors. Discover why Genesis has never been so possible, so relevant as it is today.

This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an epidemic in this country that is wiping out our youth. Drug addiction and mental illness affect youth from every socioeconomic section of society. The dangers of drug use are not limited to overdose. Club drug use has greatly increased the incidence of HIV in the heterosexual adolescent population from unprotected sex. Similarly, suicide is also related to substance abuse and is one of the leading causes of death in adolescent males who suffer from co-occurring disorders. Evidence-based treatment is currently the recommended treatment for individuals with mental health and substance abuse disorders, also referred to as co-occurring disorders. Despite this, there are few providers willing to truly work with adolescents who have co-occurring disorders, and all too often, many adolescents fall through the cracks in our health care system. This book examines addiction and psychological theories and their application to the treatment of co-occurring disorders. Basic biological and social factors involved with addiction are also reviewed in a manner to increase understanding of how an integrated system of care should work. Information presented herein is intended to increase understanding of co-occurring disorders for the general public, law enforcement, therapists, counselors, and all health care providers, to better their understanding and ability to reach out to help adolescents with mental health and substance abuse disorders. Integrated treatment involves coordination between drug counselors, therapists, and psychiatrists. This book serves as the foundation for a treatment program designed for young people from low- to middle-income families, many of whom, due to financial limitations, have been effectively excluded from receiving valuable treatment for their co-occurring disorders. Above all else, the thoughts contained in this book are written as an outreach to the very individuals who suffer from co-occurring disorders, to instill hope and renewed resolve to help them move forward in their recovery.

Book excerpt: On the plains of Wiltshire in England lie the remains of ancient giant stones. Exactly which people built these stones remains the eternal question. Just like the pyramids of Egypt its origins remain shrouded in mystery. Various theories have been put forward as to the race or otherwise of these builders, but still, much uncertainty remains. The evidence is simply overwhelming that the earliest inhabitants of Britain and Ireland were Blacks. Mythological, archeological, linguistic and other sources have substantiated this remarkable fact. Candid authorities like the British Egyptologists Gerald Massey and Albert Churchward, the Scottish historian David Mac Ritchie, and the British antiquarian Godfrey Higgins, have done exhaustive research and brought many facts to our knowledge. Tacitus, Pliny, Claudian and other writers have described the Blacks they encountered in the British Isles as "Black as Ethiopians," "Cum Nigris Gentibus," "nimble-footed blackamoors," and so on. This book reveals much about the Black presence in the early British Isles, including the "mysterious" builders of Stonehenge. We learn about the Black Fomorians, Partholonians, Nemedians, Firbolgs, Tuatha De Danann, Black Danes, Black Douglases, the giants or Cyclopes and so on. We also learn about the Black serpent-worshiping Druids who built serpentine monuments like those at Avebury and Carnac, as well as the builders of the Round Towers of Ireland. The fact remains, that Blacks have played a very important role in the early history, traditions, religion and so on, of early Britain and elsewhere than is generally known and acknowledged. This is a must-read book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a bear, eagle, whale, elephant, camel, and other creatures experience pain, they react sanely. Instead of getting hysterical, they find a safe, calm place to heal and be gently settled, which fosters their natural restorative, pain-relieving endorphins and potent immune stimulators to be released into their bloodstreams. Without a pharmacy, medical clinic, hospital, surgeon, or psychotherapist, they instinctively lay still and start to heal. Humans, on the other hand, add to their anguish by entering a fight, fright, or flight mode, which should only be reserved for life-or-death moments. We spook ourselves and compound the problem at hand by thinking things such as: Crap always happens to me. God must hate me. I bet this pain in my armpit is cancer. These pains will never go away. Im just a loser. If they force me into less pain meds, I cant make it. Break free from those thoughts and discover an endorphin paradise with the insights in this pain-relieving guide. Dr. Alan Cooper explores why humanity has lost its natural pain-abating ability and how trusting our gutsliterallycan help us overcome our fears, pains, and personal traumas to heal ourselves.
