Book excerpt: HIGH CAMP & HYSTERICALLY FUNNY, YET EMINENTLYPRACTICAL!SLUT COOKING: QUICK TRICKS FOR PUTTING OUT DELECTABLE TREATS EASILY is just what it says. A super cookbook with the fastest, most delicious recipes and innovative short-cuts you have never heard! It is also literate, high camp, hysterically funny, and extremely practical. Lady Aurelia pulls no punches when she provides instructions for entertaining and meal planning --as well as 300 dishes. Ask her about the title? "My dear, the title of our volume refers not to the unfortunate, highly-disparaging and offensive contemporary meaning of the word, "slut": A person with a certain morally-relaxed attitude. Instead, we choose to use the original, Chaucerian definition of a slut. That is, a lazy person of any gender, making no reference to sexual activity. Witty, wry, campy and knowledgeable. If you can only own one cookbook, this is it!

With a headline spot on a hit morning show and truly mouth-watering culinary skills, chef Evie Buchanan is perched on the edge of stardom. But at an industry party, a fall lands Evie in the hospital—with no memory of who she is. Scrambling to help, Evie’s assistant contacts the only “family” Evie has left, close friends who run the luxury dude ranch in California where Evie grew up. Evie has no recollection of them—until former rodeo champion Zach Pleasant walks into her hospital room, and she realizes his handsome face has been haunting her dreams . . . Zach hasn’t seen Evie in years—not since their families conducted a campaign to make sure their childhood friendship never turned into anything more. When the young cowboy refused to admit the feelings between them were real, Evie left California, making it clear she never wanted to see Zach again. Now he refuses to make the same mistake twice. Starting fresh is a risk when they have a history she can’t recall, but Zach can’t bear to let go of her now. Can he awaken the sleeping beauty inside her who might still love him?

Book excerpt: When asked about writing her book, THE LAZY SLUT COOKBOOK, the author stated, "Not every cook, man or woman, loves to stay in the kitchen for hours at a time. Some cooks want to take short cuts, a lot of short cuts. Some women want to find out what happened to their kids in school that day, or talk to their husbands. Remember husbands? Some guys want to visit with buddies, or feel that the time has come for dinner payback and they don't want to spend their bonus money at a restaurant. Some women merely want to save the manicures that they just paid $20 for. Whatever the reason, this book is dedicated to those lazy cooks who want to spend less time stirring the pot, and more time chit-chattin' and chewin'." Another way to say it is, "There is a creative, curative power in preparing food for people you love, like, respect or just haven't absolutely made up your mind to hate yet."

Book excerpt: Darryl Cook is a man who seems to have everything: a quiet home in Western Oregon, a beautiful wife, and a lot of friends to fuck her while he watches. But as he explores the cuckolding lifestyle, he finds himself tugging at threads that threaten to unravel his marriage, his town, and himself. With empathy and humor, debut author Jackie Ess crafts a kaleidoscopic meditation on marriage, manhood, dreams, basketball, sobriety, and the secret lives of Oregonians. "Underneath the sharp satire and hilarious sexual irreverence this is a deadly serious book: a brilliant novel of a seeker, like The Pilgrim's Progress refracted by queer internet culture." -Torrey Peters, author of Detransition, Baby

Book excerpt: Julie Powell thought cooking her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking was the craziest thing she'd ever do -- until she embarked on the voyage recounted in her memoir, Cleaving. Her marriage challenged by an insane, irresistible love affair, Julie decides to leave town and immerse herself in a new obsession: butchery. She finds her way to Fleischer's, a butcher shop where she buries herself in the details of food. She learns how to break down a side of beef and French a rack of ribs -- tough physical work that only sometimes distracts her from thoughts of afternoon trysts. The camaraderie at Fleischer's leads Julie to search out fellow butchers around the world -- from South America to Europe to Africa. At the end of her odyssey, she has learned a new art and perhaps even mastered her unruly heart.

Book excerpt: First full biography of an international figure, recently in the news after her successful libel case against Andrew Marry, who described her as a terrorist in The Making of Modern Britain Internationally famous for starting one of the first women's refuges in the modern world, Erin Pizzey is a controversial but hugely-respected activist with enemies on the left and the right, a pioneering figure in the maelstrom of seventies politics, and a key witness of the era. Here, she tells her story in full for the first time. The daughter of a diplomat, Erin Pizzey was born in China in 1939. One of her formative experiences was seeing her parents and brother being put under house arrest by the Maoists in 1949. This instilled a hatred of totalitarian regimes and for a short time Pizzey even worked for MI6 in Hong Kong. Once relocated in the UK, Pizzey was soon swept up by sixties radicalism and the early days of the emerging Women's Liberation Movement. Opening a small community center for maltreated women in Chiswick in 1971 was to bring Pizzey to the front line of what was becoming a national issue in a time when feminists were still treated with hostility and derision by right-wing figures, but also when left-wing radicals scorned anyone, like Pizzey, who put humanity before ideology. By the mid-1970s, Pizzey found herself under bomb threat and picketed by feminists for allowing men to staff refuges: this led to a long exile from the UK where she kept up her activities and achieved international recognition, while also reinventing herself as a best-selling writer. Erin Pizzey's life and trials have been unique; her story is a compelling one, vital to any understanding of a more revolutionary age and burning issues that still resonate today.

In these surreal and gripping stories about desire, tyranny, fear, and love, one of Brazil’s greatest queer writers appears in English for the first time In 18 daring, scheming stories filled with tension and intimacy, Caio Fernando Abreu navigates a Brazil transformed by the AIDS epidemic and stifling military dictatorship of the 80s. Tenderly suspended between fear and longing, Abreu’s characters grasp for connection: A man speckled with Carnival glitter crosses a crowded dance floor and seeks the warmth and beauty of another body. A budding office friendship between two young men turns into a surprising love, “a strange and secret harmony." One man desires another but fears a clumsy word or gesture might tear their plot to pieces. Abreu writes the stories of people whose intimate lives are on the verge of imploding at all times. Even simple gestures—a salvaged cigarette, a knock on the door from the hazy downpour of a dream, a tight-lipped smile—are precarious offerings. Junkies, failed revolutionaries, poets, and conflicted artists face threats at every turn. But, inwardly ferocious and secretly resilient, they heal. In these stories there is luminous memory and decay, and beauty on the horizon. Translated by Bruna Dantas Lobato, currently an Iowa Arts Fellow and MFA candidate in Literary Translation at the University of Iowa.

Liara Roux writes about the salacious details leading up to her decision to become a career sex worker, and the unexpected truths she learned while working in the industry. Liara Roux is accustomed to being mislabelled and misunderstood. As a child, Liara’s inquisitive, instinctive, and rebellious nature was frequently problematised in a world designed around the requirements of their neurotypical, cis, heterosexual male colleagues. Coming of age in an oppressively restrictive home, they shuffled tarot and explored self portraiture to rationalise the injustice of chronic pain, toxic lovers, and the cruel silence of divinity. Critiquing capitalism’s mechanisms of exploitation, the conservatism of Western medicine, and the politics surrounding sex work, Whore of New York: Confessions of a Sinful Woman is a candid study of artistic awakening, and both spiritual and sexual growth after abuse, seen through the eyes of a proud outsider.

Explicit, shocking, comical, and displaying the author's signature flair for blending structural complexity with direct, stylish, accessible language, The Sluts is Cooper's most transgressive novel since Frisk, and one of his most innovative works of fiction to date.

Book excerpt: Says former desperate housewife Darla Shine to stay-at-home moms everywhere: What have you got to complain about? A modern-day guide to keeping house, raising kids, and loving life. Darla Shine was once a desperate housewife. Being at home with two small children and a husband who was rarely home was enough to drive her crazy. She left her high-profile job as a television producer after her son was born, while her husband continued to move up the corporate ladder. Like many of her stay-at-home-mom friends, Shine employed a housekeeper and baby-sitters so she could spend her time running to the salon, the club, and out to lunch. Then one day she was whining to her mother about how terrible her life was, and her mother yelled at her to wake up and stop being so selfish. It was just the wakeup call she needed! The desperate housewife craze of today is sending the wrong message to women and their children everywhere, says Shine. When did being a good mom and being proud to stay home with the kids go out of style? When did it become acceptable to cheat on your husband? When did mothers start dressing like their teenage daughters? Shine finds the standards of today's desperate housewives astonishingly low, and she has set out to teach women how they can be good mothers, look good, and feel good about the choices they make. Being a housewife does not mean you are on house arrest or can't be satisfied in your marriage. So step up, realize that you want to be home with your children, and embrace your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A REVIEW from the SOHO JOURNAL www.sohojournal.com For those of us who find cooking for friends or loved ones more akin to Playing House than an expected and necessary part of our day, "The Unofficial Lazy Slut Cookbook," by Rhoda Carroll Fairman, is a fun, playful guide to the oftentimes daunting world of the kitchen. This is made clear in one section of her introduction about potential deterrents to cooking: "The Wrong Man, The Right Man, the Wrong Pan, Money Loss,Weight Gain, New Diet, Old Diet, A Small Kitchen, A Very Small Kitchen and/or a kitchen that's even smaller than that." The recipes throughout the chapters of the book, organized first by the different types of Meats, then Soups, "Stars of Starch"(Pastas and Potatoes), Veggies, and Desserts, are intended for an entire rainbow of busy women and creative men and their various culinary ailments. The chapters are headed with famous quotes, or humorous anecdotes about the subject and how its fashion has changed over time ("The mothers taught the daughters well. Instead of saying, Eat fish, you'll live longer,' they probably said Fish makes you sexy. I won't let you eat any until you're eighteen.") The recipes themselves come from actual friends of the author, and sometimes with a little back-story; they have fun names, are quite delicious, and indeed are easy to make, each requiring little more than an hour in total preparation time, and only several commonly found ingredients (unlike most conventional cookbooks which call for a dash of fresh basil and leaves the other 8 oz to rot in my refrigerator for a month). They also include tips for simplification, such as asking your butcher to cut the meat in advance, and their preparation is explained in simple, layman's terms in a paragraph, rather than over a page. But for all its lack of pretension, "The Unofficial Lazy Slut Cookbook" contains some bangin' recipes my particular favorites are "Rosemary's Roasted Rack of Lamb with Rosemary Au Jus," (p.74) the "Simple Frittata," (p. 95), and "Tiffany's $100 Hamburger," (p.55) which is pretty cheap to make, and absolutely dreamy. The desserts are great too, and laughably easy, showing how a little sugar and cream can really go a long way. Fairman ends the cookbook with a tip: "Put the coffee on first, before dinner starts. Then it'll be ready for dessert. But you knew that, didn't you? Oh, you didn't. Well, now you do." The greatest thing about "The Unofficial Lazy Slut's Cookbook" is Rhoda Carroll Fairman' s emphasis on the "creative,, curative power in preparing food for people you love, like, respect, or just haven't absolutely made up your mind to hate yet." This truly comes through in the city of Bouley, Balthazar, and 8×10 kitchens, in the age of "Top Chef" and "Martha Stewart Living." And while if you are a Lazy Slut, you may not be inclined to go out and buy this book, buy it as a present for another member of the tribe. It'll surely prove fun and delicious.

Book excerpt: “Harry Turtledove [is] probably the best-known practitioner of alternate history working today.”—American Heritage The year is 1915, and the world is convulsing. Though the Confederacy has defeated its northern enemy twice, this time the United States has allied with the Kaiser. In the South, the freed slaves, fueled by Marxist rhetoric and the bitterness of a racist nation, take up the weapons of the Red rebellion. Despite these advantages, the United States remains pinned between Canada and the Confederate States of America, so the bloody conflict continues and grows. Both presidents—Theodore Roosevelt of the Union and staunch Confederate Woodrow Wilson—are stubbornly determined to lead their nations to victory, at any cost. . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the need for interpretations and critiques of the varied messages surrounding what and how we eat, Food, Feminisms, Rhetorics collects eighteen essays that demonstrate the importance of food and food-related practices as sites of scholarly study, particularly from feminist rhetorical perspectives. Contributors analyze messages about food and bodies—from what a person watches and reads to where that person shops—taken from sources mundane and literary, personal and cultural. This collection begins with analyses of the historical, cultural, and political implications of cookbooks and recipes; explores definitions of feminist food writing; and ends with a focus on bodies and cultures—both self-representations and representations of others for particular rhetorical purposes. The genres, objects, and practices contributors study are varied—from cookbooks to genre fiction, from blogs to food systems, from product packaging to paintings—but the overall message is the same: food and its associated practices are worthy of scholarly attention.
