It begins in 1915 when children go missing in a residential area of Deadwood in Pinestork. Soon a body of a man is found at his burnt down house with a painting which survived the fire which resembles one of the missing children. Many decades later the ghost of one of the missing children try's to warn a blind girl Rosie of an evil that lurks beyond the cursed painting of the Crying Boy.

Due to the novel's huge popularity, many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, telescreen, 2 + 2 = 5, and memory hole, have entered into common use since its publication in 1949.
