This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student~ interested in world populations and demography inevitably need to know China. As the most populous country of the world, China occupies a unique position in the world population system. How its population is shaped by the intricate interplays among factors such as its political ideology and institutions, economic reality, government policies, sociocultural traditions, and ethnic divergence represents at once a fascinating and challenging arena for investigatIon and analysis. Yet, for much of the 20th century, while population studies have developed into a mature science, precise information and sophisticated analysis about the Chinese population had largely remained either lacking or inaccessible, first because of the absence of systematic databases due to almost uninterrupted strife and wars, and later because the society was closed to the outside observers for about three decades since 1949. Since the end of the Cultural Revolution, things have dramatically changed. China has embarked on an ambitious reform program where modernization became the utmost goal of societal mobilization. China could no longer afford to rely on imprecise census or survey information for population-related studies and policy planning, nor to remaining closed to the outside world. Both the gathering of more precise information and access to such information have dramatically increased in the 1980s. Systematic observations, analyses and reporting about the Chinese population have surfaced in the population literature around the globe.
Book Synopsis Coming to Terms with the Nation by : Thomas Mullaney
Download or read book Coming to Terms with the Nation written by Thomas Mullaney and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is a vast nation comprised of hundreds of distinct ethnic communities, each with its own language, history, and culture. Today the government of China recognizes just 56 ethnic nationalities, or minzu, as groups entitled to representation. This controversial new book recounts the history of the most sweeping attempt to sort and categorize the nation's enormous population: the 1954 Ethnic Classification project (minzu shibie). Thomas S. Mullaney draws on recently declassified material and extensive oral histories to describe how the communist government, in power less than a decade, launched this process in ethnically diverse Yunnan. Mullaney shows how the government drew on Republican-era scholarship for conceptual and methodological inspiration as it developed a strategy for identifying minzu and how non-Party-member Chinese ethnologists produced a "scientific" survey that would become the basis for a policy on nationalities.

Book Synopsis Capital Formation in Mainland China, 1952-1965 by : Kang Chao
Download or read book Capital Formation in Mainland China, 1952-1965 written by Kang Chao and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s and 1960s, the Chinese government exerted unprecedented efforts and marshaled enormous economic resources for the purpose of capital formation. It was difficult for the rest of the world to determine precisely how successful these efforts were because of the incompleteness of official investment statistics. In Capital Formation in Mainland China, Kang Chao provides a comprehensive measurement of fixed capital investment in China. His basic approach is that of the commodity flow method, which takes into account each investment component and each capital goods item installed in China since 1949. He has complied extensive information both from diverse Chinese publications and from sources in countries that have exported capital goods to China. On the basis of this empirical foundation he analyzes all facets of the investment drive as well as the relationship between capital accumulation and the major aspects of Chinese economic development, revealing many details previously unknown to the West. In the process of arriving at his aggregate estimates, Chao has sorted, checked, and tabulated detailed data relating to individual components that will constitute an important aid to scholars involved in research on related subjects. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1972, this book illustrates why China’s population problems are complex. It discusses at an introductory level 20th Century phenomena such as the decline in China’s death rate as a result of improved public health and medicine and the possible effects of density pressure on migration, on China’s ethnic minorities and on foreign policy. It examines these issues in areas where policy and daily life cross-over: education, farming, manufacturing output in a country that faces huge challenges of urbanization, technological education and manpower.
