Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would it take to renew our ability to name our sins in a meaningful and pertinent way? Naming sins is a particularly important task for Catholic moral theology, but it is one that often falls back into a paradigm of simple violations of rules. While laws and commandments are essential, Vatican II’s universal call to holiness and the revival of virtue ethics require moving further. Yet in part because moral theologians today tend to be lay people, not priests, there has been a de-emphasis on the confession of sins. Contemporary questions like poverty, racism, and abortion are usually connected to questions about sin in some way, but they are disconnected from the idea of naming specific sins in the sacrament of penance. Lay moral theologians raise these issues in a way that makes clear their implications for a parish social justice committee (or the voting booth), but not their implications for the naming of sins in the sacrament of reconciliation. Naming Our Sins proposes to re-make that connection: the moral theologian’s task of helping people name individual sins needs to be restored, though in ways distinctive from dominant pre-Vatican II notions. In this volume, editors Jana Bennett and David Cloutier gather some of the best of the current generation of moral theologians in order to reflect on the classic tradition of the vices. It is crucial to the Christian understanding of sin that we recognize (a) we bear at least some responsibilities for injuries, and (b) God wants us to participate in the process of healing and conversion. Neither the sin itself nor the healing simply come from somewhere else; the task of naming sins enlists us as mature, growing disciples. Each chapter takes on a different classical vice, describing the vice, exploring its dimensions in contemporary experience, and moving the reader toward naming specific sins that arise from the vice. The concluding chapters from Catholic priests explore two basic dimensions of the sacrament of penance: liturgical and communal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gods Chosen: Understanding Spiritual Warfare is a book that inspires, encourages and teaches Christians to effectively manage warfare and live victoriously for Christ. It offers Christians a fresh look at the basis of putting on God's full armor and learning to use the means God affords, namely His strength and mighty power. As Believers prepare to fight triumphantly against evil and wicked forces, we come to an understanding of the challenge, purpose and outcome of spiritual warfare. Putting on God's armor and standing firm in Him, amply equips us to fight offensively and defensively. Knowing Jesus fixed the fight in our favor produces confidence to oppose the enemy and remain faithful to God. Through conscious engagement in this fight we win against all odds. In 2005, during prayer, the Holy Spirit inspired me to write this book on spiritual warfare. I was going through a precarious time and as usual, I sought God in prayer and study of the Word. The Holy Spirit led me to Ephesians 6:10-18. As I studied and meditated, God moved me to begin writing on the subject of warfare. During research and study, I discovered there are not enough books addressing this phase of our journey. Therefore, I saw the need to press through varied attacks to produce this important work.

Be part of His plan to transform your life, the lives of other people, and the very life of your country. Jesus Christ never encountered a situation in which He said, “I’m sorry. The world is in desperate need of change, and we are the people who must bring about that change. Best-selling author and Bible teacher Derek Prince outlines our strategic position as Christians in the world—including both our privileges and responsibilities to impact individual lives, communities, and entire nations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharing in God's Presence means far more than "getting saved" and experiencing God's blessing in our lives. As believers, his presence becomes a very personal part of who we are and what we do--God actually shares himself with us! The language that we use often fails to capture the depths of God's nature penetrating ours, the fullness of his Spirit permeating our hearts, and the innermost infusion of his presence in our lives. But the truth couldn't be more intimate: "The person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him" (1 Corinthians 6:17)! This book is an invitation to share in God's presence by allowing God to share himself with you. God wants everyone to share in his embrace. As we accept our responsibility for prayer, ministry, and even revival, we share in the very precious dynamic of give and response that's involved in an intimate walk with Jesus Christ. For a general readership, this book is a reworking of material from the second half of the author's academic work God's Absence and the Charismatic Presence.

Book excerpt: This book has been written so that the veil satan has carefully woven over the faces of men would be removed. Believers do not understand what salvation is all about, not to talk of enjoying it. Salvation includes deliverance for spiritual captives in the spirit. One of satan's best instruments against believers is ignorance. Another reason this work was put together is to expose the subtle ways through which the devil has contaminated many lives thereby preventing them from realizing the purpose of God for their lives. This book is a practical guide for anyone with the determination to experience the power in the name of Jesus Christ as the only name given unto man for salvation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using archival material and oral testimony collected during workshops in Nunavut between 1996 and 2008, Frédéric Laugrand and Jarich Oosten provide a nuanced look at Inuit religion, offering a strong counter narrative to the idea that traditional Inuit culture declined post-contact. They show that setting up a dichotomy between a past identified with traditional culture and a present involving Christianity obscures the continuity and dynamics of Inuit society, which has long borrowed and adapted "outside" elements. They argue that both Shamanism and Christianity are continually changing in the Arctic and ideas of transformation and transition are necessary to understand both how the ideology of a hunting society shaped Inuit Christian cosmology and how Christianity changed Inuit shamanic traditions.
