Investigation of the literature revealed no existing studies that focused on this phenomenon. Twelve single mothers were interviewed about their experiences after their children moved away from home. The interviews were analyzed through the process of phenomenological reduction; seven textual themes emerged from this process: (a) Emotional Response, (b) Feeling a Void, (c) Feelings of Loss, (d) Self-Discovery, (e) Freedom, (f) Impact of the Children’s Proximity, and (g) Reduction of Support for the Single Mother. Several subthemes were also identified. A structural description of the phenomenon was created using the universal structures of temporality, spatiality, bodyhood, relationship to self, relationship to others, causality, and materiality. The final synthesis illustrated the complex and unique experiences single mothers face after their children move away from home. Findings of this research can be used by clinicians who work with individuals and families in psychotherapy to help single mothers prepare for and navigate through the empty nest.
