Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Simpler Natural Bases By a more or less arbitrary delimitation of the subject matter, involving for instance the total exclusion of purine bases, I have aimed at giving, in the space at my disposal, a somewhat detailed account of the chemistry of the bases dealt with, and of their derivatives. Some, like the amines and adrenaline, are remarkable on account of their physiological action, and in each case, therefore, a brief description of this action has been added. In this way I have endeavoured to make the mono graph also of interest to those who are concerned with the biological rather than with the chemical aspect of the subject. A brief chapter on the practical methods used in the isolation Of the simple bases has been added, and special attention has been given. To the bibliography which extends to the autumn of 1913. It is a pleasant duty to express my great indebtedness to Dr. H. H. Dale, without whose advice and criticism much of the pharmacological sections would have remained unwritten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ferns (Filicales) Treated Comparatively With a View to Their Natural Classification, Vol. 1: Analytical Examination of the Criteria of Comparison Little do ye know your own blessedness; for to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour. R. L. Stevenson, Essay on El Dorado. IN this passage Stevenson enunciates a truth that applies with singular force to those who enter on morphological enquiry. To travel hopefully is the chosen pursuit of all who study large groups of organisms with a view to reducing them to order, so as to throw light on their origin and evolution. In such quests no one need expect under present conditions to arrive at the final destination of complete and assured knowledge. If any one should indulge this hope his disappointment is certain. Even if he did so arrive, and found himself able fully to demonstrate the whole truth, how greatly would the quest lose in its interest. It is in the pursuit of his El Dorado of evolutionary history, not in the arrival there, that the true blessedness of the morphologist lies. It behoves then those who travel on this journey not to hurry unduly, but to consider with critical care the manner of their journeying, rather than to seek short cuts to an elusive goal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Modern Chemistry The beginner in the study of chemistry finds interest and pleasure, first of all, in the remarkable new facts which are placed before him, and this is both natural and desirable. N 0 one can master the science without much study of proper ties and reactions, and minute acquaintance with as many phenomena as possible is a fundamental requisite. Modern chemistry has, however, a number of general laws which appear. Everywhere through it, connecting various facts in the most interesting way. Before study has gone very far it becomes necessary to begin the statement of these laws and to indicate how the facts already learned group them selves about them. Two purposes are served by this method of presentation. First, a real science of chemistry begins to unfold itself to the student, and second, the acquisition of more new facts is made easier and more interesting. We have planned in this book to present a sufficient number of facts and experiments to fill the time usually devoted to a first course, and at the same time we have endeavored to fit these facts, as far as possible, to the Simpler of the general laws now firmly established as the basis of the science of chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Easy Primer No one but a teacher of little children can possibly be aware of the number of times they must see words, and read and write and spell them, before they are able to recognize them at a glance, before they can read them, especially in new connections. Learning to read is a complex process, and the complexity has given rise to many so-called Methods. To teach reading well the skillful teacher will use the best parts of all good methods, and will blindly follow none. Walking and talking are also complex pro cesses, and yet babies learn to walk and to talk with very little or no help. Under right conditions the child should begin to read almost as naturally and unconsciously as it begins to talk. Under favorable conditions some children learn to read without any teaching. At the start the mechanics of reading, although important, should not be so obtruded upon the beginner as to hide from him the purpose of learning to read. Ideally, the education of the child is natural, unforced, and unhindered development. We should in cite, indirectly, and maintain his interest; we should, without attempting many things at a time, carry the child along as fast as he should go, but no faster. And we should keep in mind that the great factor in the child's education is not method, nor teaching, nor environment, but an innate faculty that makes for develop ment. It's an auspicious title for such a humble man, yet no one can deny that the grasp Morris has on science and faith issues is staggering. In this updated classic, Morris walks the reader through history "real history" by showing the absurdity of evolution. From a wide variety of sciences, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, Morris presents clear evidence that the Bible gives us an astonishingly accurate record of the past, present, and future.
