Book excerpt: Guidebook to one of Spain's most unspoilt regions, comprising the provinces of Caceres and Badajoz. 32 varied walks of between 6 and 20 km explore the sierras of the region and are suitable for any reasonably fit walker. The book covers The Northern Sierras/System Central (including the Sierra de Gata, Sierra de Bejar, Sierra de Gredos), The Central Sierras/Montes de Toledos, and the Southern Sierras (including the Sierra Morena). There are detailed route descriptions for each walk, along with clear sketch maps, and information on terrain, refreshments, access and parking. There are also notes on natural and historical information and what to look out for along the way. Walks can be done from a number of bases in the area including San Martín de Trevejo, Gata, Hervas, Jerte, Jarandilla de la Vera, Montanchez, Guadalupe, Almoharin, Merida, Alange, Hornachos and Monesterio. Lying west of Madrid and east of the Portuguese border, Extremadura is an unspoiled gem perfect for walkers, lovers of nature and seekers of peace. The region brings together rugged mountains, rolling hills, deep river valleys, huge forests and thousands of kilometres of paths, perfect for walking. Apart from its natural wonders and superb birdlife, Extremadura boasts a variety of heritage sites including castles, cave paintings and monasteries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing world population is already causing intensive pressure on the most productive areas of the earth's surface. Hopes of improved living standards, if realised, will increase the pressure still further. The need to make better use of less productive areas thus becomes an urgent priority for human endeavour. In this respect, the arid and semi-arid regions of the world, occupying about 11,000 million acres or 4,500 million hectares, roughly one third of the tota11and surface, pose a constant challenge to man's technological skill. Though the possibilities of economic use of the real deserts are inherently limited, there remain vast areas with less extreme conditions where sustained research is capable of yielding substantial gains in pro ductivity. The problem is so large that it can be solved only by the coordinated efforts of workers in many countries and many disciplines. Forestry has a special part to play, not only for its potential value for wood production but still more for the beneficial effects of shelter from desiccating winds which so commonly accompany arid conditions. Mr. KA UL is to be congratulated on his initiative to pool the results of research on afforestation in arid zones in many parts of the world, and to present them in a single volume in the form of separate monographs.

Book excerpt: Is the castle of Trevejo the living vestige that confirms the mythical relationship between Templars and Masons? What were the Civil War and the post-war periods like in Acebo? Was the horrible crime between families that took place in San Martín de Trevejo fair? Who were those persecuted by the Holy Office in Perales and Hoyos? The answers to these questions, and others, are revealed throughout the successive passages that make up this work, where the reader can immerse himself in the past, crossing the frontier of time. This new work by B. Maestro is the story of those who suffered from unemployment and the bad conditions of an iniquitous life, but it is also the story of those who revealed themselves and fought so that this circumstance would change, without forgetting those who defended the democratic government in its day, even when they were the ones who put an end to it. In the pages that make up this work of historical research, the reader will be able to immerse himself fully in a turbulent Contemporary Age, covering its totality, and dividing the chapters following the order of the centuries that conform it (XVIII, XIX and XX).

Book excerpt: Iberia, Land of Glaciers: How The Mountains Were Shaped By Glaciers discusses the impact of past glaciers in the current landscape of Iberia. Currently, there are only small glaciers in the highest peaks of the Pyrenees that are the legacy of the last cold period that ended at the end of the 19th century: The Little Ice Age. However, an accurate observation of the landscape of the highest peaks and adjacent valleys of the Iberian Peninsula reveals a past shaped by the successive passage of glaciers with hundreds of meters of ice, similar to what happens today in the Alps or Patagonia. Iberian glaciation has resulted in ice expansion through valleys that are now used by the road network and where important populations settle; in addition, large accumulations of sediments deposited by those glaciers are still unstable today and can trigger risks for mountain populations. Iberia, Land of Glaciers presents the impact of the glaciers in the landscape of mountains following a more educational perspective with examples of 21 Iberian massifs written by specialists from each of the areas. Assesses present-day Iberian Peninsula landscape trends by understanding the past behavior of glaciers Includes the latest findings of all the major Iberian mountains in a single book Includes quality, color figures to enhance understanding of glacier formations Provides a more educational and pedagogical perspective on glacial processes to reach an audience beyond academia
