Chase Baker is a true Renaissance Man. He’s also a man who knows how to find trouble. A part-time resident of Florence, Italy and New York City, his resume reads like a modern day Da Vinci or Casanova. Writer, treasure hunter, adventurer, and even archaeological sandhog, Chase is also lucky and more often unlucky in love. Now, at the direct request of the Florence police, he finds himself on the trail of an archaeologist by the name of Dr. Andre Manion who’s gone missing from his teaching post at the American University. But having worked for the archaeologist several years ago as a sandhog on a secret but failed dig just outside the Great Pyramids in the Giza Plateau, Chase smells a renewed opportunity to uncover what, for some, just might be the most prized archaeological treasure in the world: The mortal remains of Jesus. But then, do the remains truly exist? How will Chase Baker go about solving the mystery of finding both the archaeologist and the alleged Jesus Remains? With the help of Manion’s beautiful ex-wife, Chase will manage to secure an up-close and personal examination of the Shroud of Turin, not only to view the famous image of the crucified Christ, but to unlock the relic’s greatest secret which is none other than a map, or a key, detailing the precise location of Jesus’s body. It's a mission that will test Chase's faith in both himself and God. A romantic, action-packed, and thrilling conspiracy mystery. Book excerpt: Dr. Royce Benders in the mid-eighties seems to have it all. A Nobel Prize winner on the cutting edge of the rapidly developing DNA field for criminology and human embryogenesis. But Benders' dream has nothing to do with fame or fortune. He is a devout Christian obsessed with the Second Coming and impatient to see it in his lifetime. The Catholic Church invites Dr. Benders to work on the Shroud of Turin to help devise a plan to save the rapidly deteriorating linen cloth that wrapped Jesus in the tomb after his crucifixion. Taking blood from the holiest of Christian artifacts, he returns to L.A. and inseminates several women in his in vitro clinic to hasten the Second Coming. Now these descendants of the Shroud are in their late twenties. What Dr. Benders successfully created brings the best of Heaven and the worst of Hell face-to-face.

Book excerpt: Two decades after radiocarbon dating declared the Turin Shroud a mediaeval fake, brand-new historical discoveries strongly suggest that this famous cloth, with its extraordinary photographic imprint, is genuinely Christ's shroud after all. In 1978 in his international bestseller The Turin Shroud Ian Wilson ignited worldwide public debate with his compelling case endorsing the shroud's authenticity. Now, 30 years later, he has completely rewritten and updated his earlier book to provide fresh evidence to support his original argument. Shroud boldly challenges the current post-radiocarbon dating view - that it is a fake. By arguing his case brilliantly and provocatively, Ian Wilson once more throws the matter into the public arena for further debate and controversy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first books written in the U.S. since 1988 that presents the Shroud of Turin as the authentic burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. The author, a medical doctor, takes us on a scientific and scriptural search (with more than 70 revealing photographs) that allows us to decide for ourselves whether the ancient cloth has any meaning for us today. A companion video that traces the story of the shroud from Turin to Jerusalem is also available. In 1961, while poking around in a used bookstore in Boston, Lavoie stumbled across a paperback called A Doctor at Calvary, by French surgeon Pierre Barbet. As Lavoie thumbed through the pages, he discovered that Barbet was writing not about Jesus' crucifixion but about the Shroud of Turin, a piece of cloth that contained the bloody image of a naked man. Thus began Lavoie's 30-year quest to uncover the true origins of the Shroud and to reveal its mysteries. In this well-told scientific and theological detective story, Lavoie offers a step-by-step account of his attempts to prove that the Shroud of Turin could well have been the shroud that covered Jesus as he was taken from his cross to his tomb. In order to show that the marks on the cloth are indeed blood stains, Lavoie discusses the nature of blood as it clots, especially when those clots are covered with cloth. Through various experiments, he is able to conclude: "blood clots transfer to cloth as mirror images of themselves; the neatness of the transfers is related to the fact that the man of the shroud died in the vertical position; the time the clots take to transfer to cloth coincide closely with the gospel timetable of the death and burial of Jesus." Lavoie is on his firmest footing when he sticks to his scientific theories, but when he begins to argue in the final chapters that John's gospel and letters indicate that John possessed the shroud and was hiding it from his audience, he treads shakier speculative ground.

Book excerpt: When children claim to have imaginary friends, it's normally harmless play, but in Shroud Of Beckoning: Part One of the Ice Water Mansion Series, they're actually demonic and angelic apparitions that are battling over the child's soul. Blending the supernatural world with the essence of daily life, Woody transports readers back to the spring of 1964 to begin her tale of good vs. evil. Within a dysfunctional family in California, four-year-old Carla lives with her older sister, parents, and a secret friend. Clad in black, this precocious apparition poses as a friendly playmate. However, Schatten is no ordinary companion he's pure evil and feeds off human souls. When Carla cries and seethes, his outward features rejuvenate. In turn, when she laughs and finds love, he ages into a hideous form that terrorizes her. Deceiving her into believing she's his only friend, he actually knows her sister, mother, and others, but unlike them, Carla is bait to help find a boy's soul, Tony, who his adversaries stole from him years before. Adding a new addition to the family, Carla's mother gives birth to a son who Carla instantly loves. Unfortunately, this pushes Schatten to plot the baby's demise, resulting in Officer Jarred Blanton arriving to investigate. Blanton, a well-loved man with a good family, is everything Schatten despises and must destroy to keep his plans on track, but in doing so, he alters his own plans and creates a chain of events that intertwines Blanton's life with Carla's. As Carla and Blanton embark on a horrific path to save their very souls, Woody chronicles their dark stories while everything and everyone they love is slowly destroyed because Schatten will never stop until their souls are his and Tony is found.

Book excerpt: The book examines Charlie Chaplin's evolving perspective on dark comedy in his three war films, Shoulder Arms (1918), The Great Dictator (1940), and Monsieur Verdoux (1947). In the first he uses the genre in a groundbreaking manner but yet for a pro-war cause. In Dictator dark comedy is applied in an antiwar way. In Monsieur Verdoux Chaplin embraces the genre as an individual in defense against a society out to destroy him. All three are pivotal films in the development of the genre in film, with the latter two movies being very controversial for their time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beat Movement was one of the most radical and innovative literary and arts movements of the 20th century, and the history of the Beat Movement is still being written in the early years of the 21st century. Unlike other kinds of literary and artistic movements, the Beat Movement is self-perpetuating. After the 1950s generation, headlined by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs, a new generation arose in the 1960s led by writers such as Diane Wakoski, Anne Waldman, and poets from the East Side Scene. In the 1970s and 1980s writers from the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church and contributors to World magazine continued the movement. The 1980s and 1990s Language Movement saw itself as an outgrowth and progression of previous Beat aesthetics. Today poets and writers in San Francisco still gather at City Lights Bookstore and in Boulder at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and continue the movement. It is now a postmodern movement and probably would be unrecognizable to the earliest Beats. It may even be in the process of finally shedding the name Beat. But the Movement continues. The Historical Dictionary of the Beat Movement covers the movement's history through a chronology, an introductory essay, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on significant people, themes, critical issues, and the most significant novels, poems, and volumes of poetry and prose that have formed the Beat canon. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Beat Movement.
