Book excerpt: Shirley Andrews has brought forth the greatness of our God through the visualization of nature; through the lives and behaviors of some of Gods most colorful creatures, birds! Shirley brings together her words of wisdom and the power of her prayers as she shares with each new description. As I read the book, I gained a totally new insight into how our God, the Creator of all things, yearns for us to be close to Him. Through the Scripture and the photos we see clearly the loving beauty of Gods creation. I recommend this devotional for people who are looking for the gentleness, sweetness and loving kindness that comes to us through Shirleys ability to show us the greatness that comes from small things. I encourage each of you to take this devotional each day and see how God will reveal Himself to you and how we along with Shirley journey with her in her relationship with God. This book brings forth the greatness of God on each page! ENJOY! Rev. Patti Molik Elder, Upper New York Annual Conference United Methodist Church Shirley's wonderful compilation of prayer, Scripture, photography, and devotional reflections, contained in "His Eye Is On the Sparrow," provided me with a greater respect of the interdependence between humanity and creation and the way in which God's presence sustains and maintains the fragile balance between the two. This inspiring devotional highlights insightful lessons to each of us through the life of various birds God has gifted to the world. I know I will look at birds differently from now on. Rev. Shirley brings forth not only beauty through the photos, but her use of the Holy Scriptures to open to the reader the true understandings of Pentecost and the Resurrection of Jesus. I highly recommend all her devotionals; they will draw you closer to God through the Word. They will open you to the beauty of creation by the Creator of the Universe. - Rev. Patti Molik United Methodist Elder of Upper New York Annual Conference Shirley's wonderful compilation of prayer, Scripture, photography, and devotional reflections, contained in "His Eye Is On the Sparrow," provided me with a greater respect of the interdependence between humanity and creation and the way in which God's presence sustains and maintains the fragile balance between the two. This inspiring devotional highlights insightful lessons to each of us through the life of various birds God has gifted to this world. I know I will look at birds differently from now on. - Rev. Penny Brink Elder, Upper New York Annual Conference United Methodist Church I am often asked to write an endorsement or a forward for a new book, but this time, I begin this endorsement with a "feeling of excitement." I absolutely loved the idea of linking nature to a devotional. Nature has always been inspiring to me, and I often talk to God as I walk through the beauty of God's creation around me. How can you possibly see the beauty and wonder of our planet and our universe without being inspired by the God who made it? So, when I looked at even the very idea of this manuscript I was inspired. I read the book and then I sat down to write this. I first took a walk through the wonder and beauty of God's creation around me. As always, I can not walk through the trees or along a creek or stream without being inspired. Therefore, as I write these words I am inspired not only by this book, but my last encounter with nature. As I read the pages, I met an author who through the beauty of her writings has linked nature and Divine inspiration and truly inspired me. Just to think about nature and talking to God brings inspiration to my whole being. So, with anticipation and great emotion, I endorse FAITH for an UPSIDE-DOWN WORLD by Shirley D. Andrews. As I looked at the beautiful pictures I saw nature, but I also felt the hand of God. As I read the words of this manuscript, I knew that this author would introduce me to God, because like the artist inside me, I would feel and experience God by what I was about to read, and I did. Thank you, Shirley for introducing me again to the God who spoke nature into existence. You must experience this book and see the God who not only has his eye on the sparrow, but made the sparrow. Shirley, you will truly inspire the world. - Dr. Thomas F. Reid

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shirley’s writing comes from a place of deep love for and faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I have often heard her say, and pray, that the Cross of Christ is at the center of all that God has done for us. The Cross must also be at the center of our lives, our families, our churches, our nation, and our world. The Cross is at the center of our Lenten journey of faith. In this book of devotions Shirley uses scripture, song, photos, wise words, and prayer to bring us to the foot of the Cross. She reminds us of our sin, which made the Cross necessary. She writes of God’s love for us, which made the Cross possible. She urges us to come to the Cross and receive the forgiveness that is offered there. She leads us to rejoice in the new life that is ours because Jesus conquered sin on the Cross and conquered death as He rose from the grave. I join Shirley in praying that this book will bring glory to God. May it find its way into the hands of those who don’t yet know Jesus, and be used by the Holy Spirit to show them the Cross which leads to life; May it bless those who do know Jesus, helping them to draw closer to Him through the Lenten season, the season of the Cross. May the Holy Spirit lead you to the Cross and perform God’s renewing work in you as you read this. - Rev. Judy Humphrey-Fox, elder, Upper New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, pastor, Amsterdam United Methodist Church and Restoration Ministries, Bilingual, Spanish/English, Amsterdam, NY. Our family thoroughly enjoyed Shirley’s hope-filled devotions. Her themes of trust in Jesus and the importance of sharing the Good News with others resonate for those of us striving to do both, but sometimes faltering. This volume is incredibly helpful to those seeking to move through Lent and Easter with a sense of purpose and intentionality. We particularly enjoyed the language of the prayers – spirit filled and from the heart. Shirley has presented us with an opportunity to reflect on our place in the grand scheme of God’s saving work in the world. She invites us to claim all the rich blessings that life in Christ has to offer. - The Rev. Brooke Newell, elder, Upper New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, pastor, Queensbury United Methodist Church, Queensbury, New York.

Book excerpt: Stories from the women and men who have served alongside Methodist and United Methodist bishops. When a bishop is elected in The United Methodist Church, it is not only the one elected who is asked to serve but his or her spouse and family as well. Hear the stories of how Methodist and United Methodist episcopal spouses have adjusted to and navigated this life-changing journey. While dealing with the full range of human experience—births, deaths, relationship struggles, and illness—they also travel the world, participate in mission and ceremonies, meet interesting people, and stand up for justice. Through hardships, celebrations, and everyday struggles, these spouses find their own paths of ministry, answering the calls that are also placed upon their lives. In these ways and many others, they also serve. Praise for They Also Served A meticulous labor of love by Jane P. Ives, They Also Served remembers faithful unsung Christians by chronicling previously unrecorded details of the spouses of episcopal leaders. Sometimes in the spotlight, often in the shadows, the bishop's spouses struggled to fulfill unpaid roles and undefined responsibilities in the church, usually far from family and friends. Ives empatheticlly highlights how these persons, usually without voice or vote, helped shape the church's mission and ministry. - Dr. Donald E. Messer, Executive Director, Central for Health and Hope: Focusing on Global HIV and AIDS, Centennial Colorado. Bishops may ebb and flow in their popularity based on their decisions, but their spouses are almost universally loved and admired. Jane Ives helps readers understand why that is the case with her comprehensive story of the impressive, diverse, and thoroughly dedicated women and men who have contributed so much to God's work. —Lovett H. Weems, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Church Leadership Emeritus, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC In the gospel of Luke, Jesus sent the disciples out, two by two, to every town, and country, every charge and conference. Ives' book records the wisdom of sending two, and restores the names of those often forgotten in the story of the people called "Methodists," the spouses. These are remarkable oral histories as well as timelines of social holiness and global service. This is not a book about survival in ministry and marriage; it's a testimony to those who thrived in their calling. —Heather Murray Elkins, Professor of Worship, Preaching, and the Arts, The Theological School of Drew University, Madison, New Jersey This is a book about discipleship. It is also a book about ministry and itinerancy. It tells stories of how God sometimes calls two people to the work of episcopacy, people who happen to be married to each other. It is a book that will make you laugh and cry! This book is an important addition to the literature of Methodist episcopacy. And it is a hard book to put down! —William Boyd Grove, Bishop (Ret.) of The United Methodist Church Jane Ives has given the Methodist family a priceless treasure. Through an astonishing effort to collect memories and explore archival material, she has compiled a comprehensive record of episcopal spouses, their stories, accomplishments, and contributions to the church. But this book is more than a biographical dictionary. It offers a poignant, insightful account of the lives of bishops, their spouses and families, and the impact of the church's expectations on all of them. As a little boy, I knew firsthand the phone call: get on a train to New Orleans with your sister; your Daddy is going to be a bishop. Allow me to testify, then, that this book is the real deal -- genuine, human, and rich with faith and Spirit. —Thomas E. Frank, Associate Dean for Continuing Studies, Graduate School of Arts and Science, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina Laity and clergy active in United Methodist life and their spouses will want to immerse themselves in this "corporate" autobiography, which provides an overview of Methodism through almost 80 years of personal experiences and cultural change. Jane Ives, an episcopal spouse, has amassed here narratives, reports, and communications crafted by her spousal "colleagues," living and dead, as well as by those who have known them. For page after page, the reader will relive Methodism's sometimes gradual, sometimes dramatic evolution and its struggles with race, gender, inclusivity, and global relationships. The bishops' spouses have shown great creativity in making the most of their opportunities to be together during Council meetings: sharing ideas, establishing covenant and interest groups, and adjusting their organization to respond to changing needs. Ives has devoted the final third of the book to profiles of the spouses, some quite famous and others whose names are not even known. These vignettes illustrate how different episcopal spouses have lived out their own calling and how they have impacted the church and the world. —Russell E. Richey, Dean Emeritus of Candler School of Theology and William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Church History Emeritus, Durham, North Carolina

In the first half of the twentieth century, the region became a mecca for hunters and fishermen, as well as for travelers looking for rest and relaxation at popular resorts such as the Mount Kineo House. The Moosehead Lake Region: 1900-1950 uses vintage photographs to tell the story of this Maine retreat. The images depict visitors and residents of Greenville, Shirley, Rockwood, Beaver Cove, and Kokadjo; the lumbering era in the North Woods; and the locomotives whose whistles pierced the wilderness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on Wings of Faith In 1868, with the nation in general disarray following the American Civil War, the Methodist Church began to form mission churches for freed Blacks in the South. It was out of these mission efforts that the historically important Stewart Memorial Methodist Church was founded in 1893 Daytona, Florida. In 1939, when several Methodist Churches reunited and assumed the title Methodist Church, Black Methodist Churches were included, but they were placed in the segregated Central Jurisdiction of the Methodist Church. Stewart Memorial Episcopal Church was renamed Stewart Memorial Methodist Church. There was still another change to come. When serveral Methodist-based churches united in 1967 and became the United Methodist Church, Stewart Memorial assumed its present name, Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church. Since its beginning, more than forty ministers have served pastoral charges at Stewart Memorial. Through the years, the United Methodist Church evolved, and so did Stewart Memorial, but the basis foundation of Methodism was unshakable. Methodism, as perceived by John Wesley, emphasized small group worship, which was described as: "A company of men having the form and seeking the power of godliness, united in order to pray together, to receive the word of exhortation, and to watch over one another in love, that they may help each other to work out their salvation." Making up these small groups under Wesley were those who had "a desire to flee from the wrath to come, and to be saved from their sins." It is upon the sound foundation of Methodism, as emphasized by Wesley, that Stewart Memorial was founded and continues to exist.

Book excerpt: An explosive look at the NFL Draft from the inside out that exposes the multilayered feeding frenzy that swarms around America's top college players. The Draft follows a handful of NFL hopefuls through the ups and downs of the 2004 college football season and the predraft process, culminating with the 2005 draft. Among the prospects are Virginia defensive end Chris Canty, who overcomes a devastating early-season knee injury to reestablish himself as a top draft hopeful, only to suffer a detached retina in a nightclub skirmish; and Fred Gibson, a talented but rail-thin Georgia wide receiver who struggles to put on the weight needed to go over the middle in the NFL. It's a complex environment, with college coaches attempting to protect their "student-athletes" from exploitation (while fully aware that they can only remain competitive if they attract NFL-caliber players to their schools), along with sports agents and NFL scouts trying to stay a step ahead of their competition. These parties provide a multi-angled view of the world of emerging NFL talent. The reader follows the season through the eyes of a host of power players and scouts, from veteran agent Pat Dye Jr. to Jerry Maguire clone Jack Scharf, to the coaching divisions of Florida State University and the University of Virginia--headed by longtime Bill Parcells disciple Al Groh. Also central to the narrative are the Atlanta Falcons and former executives Rich McKay and Tim Ruskell, who use a character-based evaluation system to set their draft board. These parallel stories weave together, culminating in draft weekend, to create a gripping and fascinating look at a world few see from the inside.

This book features a geographical area that extends from the land of pepperoni rolls, created by Italian bakeries for coal miners in northern West Virginia, to downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the Zarzour family, originally from the Middle East, has operated a Southern butter-bean-turnip-green diner since 1918.
