Roger Wallin, Commander, US Navy Reserve, retired The Ships from Field’s Point commemorates an episode of local and regional history that occurred during World War II. At that time, an emergency shipyard was established at a waterfront neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. The yard at Field’s Point employed as many as 21,000 workers, and it built three types of ocean-going ships to support the war effort. Since the end of the war, there have been occasional articles in local newspapers that recalled the past existence of the shipyard, but there never has been an adequate description of the sixty-four ships that were produced there. Author C. Roger Wallin has focused his attention on those ships. This book describes the three types of ships and explains how they were armed and equipped to perform their assigned missions. It also addresses the wartime operational history of the ships, and continues with their use during the post war years. Finally, an appendix is included that indicates the significant milestone dates and the ultimate disposition of each of the 64 vessels.
Book Synopsis Reduction of a Ship's Magnetic Field Signatures by : John Holmes
Download or read book Reduction of a Ship's Magnetic Field Signatures written by John Holmes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decreasing the magnetic field signature of a naval vessel will reduce its susceptibility to detonating naval influence mines and the probability of a submarine being detected by underwater barriers and maritime patrol aircraft. Both passive and active techniques for reducing the magnetic signatures produced by a vessel's ferromagnetism, roll-induced eddy currents, corrosion-related sources, and stray fields are presented. Mathematical models of simple hull shapes are used to predict the levels of signature reduction that might be achieved through the use of alternate construction materials. Also, the process of demagnetizing a steel-hulled ship is presented, along with the operation of shaft-grounding systems, paints, and alternate configurations for power distribution cables. In addition, active signature reduction technologies are described, such as degaussing and deamping, which attempt to cancel the fields surrounding a surface ship or submarine rather than eliminate its source. Table of Contents: Introduction / Passive Magnetic Silencing Techniques / Active Signature Compensation / Summary

Book excerpt: As governor of Rhode Island, J. Howard McGrath oversaw the passage of social legislation aimed at improving the lives of his constituents during the dark days of World War II. As a Rhode Island senator he served as the Democratic National Committee Chairman during the contentious 1948 presidential election, when few believed Harry Truman could defeat New York governor Thomas R. Dewey. Following Truman's victory, McGrath could easily have written his own ticket to further political success--but his career was cut short in 1952 when he was forced to resign as Attorney General amid a cloud of scandal. This biography traces the rise and fall of a politician who achieved notable success yet ultimately fell victim to his appetite for power, fame and fortune.

In 1863, the Union was unable to adequately fill its black regiments. In an attempt to remedy that, Col. James Montgomery led a raid up the Combahee River on June 2 to gather recruits and punish the plantations. Aiding him was an expert at freeing slaves—famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman. The remarkable effort successfully rescued about 750 enslaved men, women, and children. Only one soldier was killed in the action, which marked a strategy shift in the war that took the fight to civilians. This book details the fascinating true story that became a legend.
