Excerpt: ... the shipbuilding industry chapter I ancient ships and early steamers T) Y what means prehistoric man, or even men in _J the antediluvian age, crossed rivers or navigated lakes, forms an inquiry which has had resistless 'fascination for studious minds all down the course of time, and much learning has been expended in de 'ciphering, from ancient sculptures or rock-drawings; from Saga and Edda literature; and from exhumed relics discovered from time to time in various parts, precise information on primeval man's medium of water transport, and on the subsequent evolution of the raft, the dug-out, the coracle, the canoe, the rowing galley, the sailing ship for coasting and oversea service. We can only here, in the most superficial way possible, touch on outstanding and comparatively modern features of such lines of inquiry. Canoes, hollowed out by fire and by stone implements from the solid tree-trunk, have been found, more or less completely preserved, in many parts of the world, and in some of the more uncivilised parts F B these may still be seen in use, as will also the " coracle" or boat made of wickerwork with a covering of hide. The coracle of Wales is well known, and in western Ireland the " curragh" is still in use; while in South America, and other parts of the world, the balsa, made of reeds elaborately woven, and rendered watertight by pitch or bituminous substances, are considered quite worthy of modern ingenuity and skill in producing. Since 1834, when I performed for a short time the duties of Purser of a Steamer on Lake Ontario, on the banks of which I was born and brought up, I have had great Opportunities of witnessing the performances of steamers and other vessels. From that time to this, I have been an almost constant voyager on the great lakes and rivers of America, or the ocean. My travels by water, made in all sorts of vessels - from a fishing boat to the Leviathan - would more than quadruple the circumference of the earth. But in endeavouring to investigate the intricate question of resistance to ships, and the best form to overcome that resistance, I have to confess myself deficient in one very desirable, if not essential, qualification, namely, a high mathe matical education - having entirely neglected those studies after leaving school. My paper, therefore, though on a scientific subject, is not a scientific paper. Nevertheless, my experience has enabled me, as I believe, to see where so many learned and scientific men have failed in their efforts to master some of the many important questions connected with naval architecture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Ship-Building Industry of the United States The work of this investigation began in November, 1880, in the city Of Bath, Maine, at which place the greatest number and the largest and finest wooden vessels in this country are built. It was found almost at once that the only means of getting full, reliable, and accurate statistics of the ship-building industry would be by personal visitation of the various ship-buildin g localities of the country. After a thorough study Of the state of the industry in Maine, the whole coast southward to Norfolk, Virginia, was visited, every ship-yard, repair yard, boat-shop, and important establishment being entered on the way. All the different establishments scattered along the Hudson river were then visited, and after that the boat-yards of the Erie canal and the ship-yards of the northern lakes all the way from Oswego, New York, to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The statistics of the industry at Green Bay, Wisconsin, were obtained by correspondence. Letter-writing was, however, seldom resorted to, as one day spent in a ship-yard in personal contact with builder, engineer, and workmen, and in the inspection Of such books, draughts, and models as one would be permitted to see, was worth four weeks' correspondence by mail. After a visit to the lakes, several weeks were spent on the Monongahela, Allegheny, Kanawha, Ohio, and Mississippi rivers in gathering the statistics Of barge and steamboat building and in learning by actual observation what was going on in the yards. Two months were then spent on the Pacific coast in personal visits to all the different ship-building localities in California and on Puget sound and the Columbia river, Humboldt bay and Coos bay alone excepted, data from the two bays being obtained by correspondence. With regard to the Gulf Of Mexico and the south Atlantic coast, the statistics Of the industry were Obtained through the medium of the local census agents and the local collectors of customs, and were verified by means of data prepared by leading and well-informed shipwrights in Charleston, South Carolina; Key West, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Galveston, Texas.
