This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Building of the Ship, and Other Poems Mr. Longfellow's birthplace was in a sea-port, and his youth and early manhood were passed in intimate association with sea-life. In his half-autobiographical reverie My Lost Youth he records something of the effect which these associations had upon his mind. Af terward, when living in Cambridge, he was wont to spend his summers at his cottage in Nahant. One after another there occurred to him poems which had their suggestion in sea-scenes; and in April, 1849, when cast ing about for a convenient grouping for a volume of his uncollected poems, he found that a natural one was in dicated by the double title By the Fireside and By the Seaside. There were hardly enough poems to make a satisfactory volume, and he was dispirited by his appar ent inability to write a poem of any importance. He wrote in his diary: No new thing to start the stag nant current. Oh for some great idea to refresh me! I am pondering on a continuation of Hyperion. His wish, as he records it, reminds us of the saying of Her der, a German poet, when lying wearily in sickness Give me a great thought, that I may quicken myself with it. The Sea-kings loved not boasting, cursed not him that cursed, They honored all men duly, and him faced them, first; They strove and knew not hatred, smote and toiled to save, They tended whom they vanquished. Book Synopsis Silence in Catullus by : Benjamin Eldon Stevens
Download or read book Silence in Catullus written by Benjamin Eldon Stevens and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both passionate and artful, learned and bawdy, Catullus is one of the best-known and critically significant poets from classical antiquity. An intriguing aspect of his poetry that has been neglected by scholars is his interest in silence, from the pauses that shape everyday conversation to linguistic taboos and cultural suppressions and the absolute silence of death. In Silence in Catullus, Benjamin Eldon Stevens offers fresh readings of this Roman poet's most important works, focusing on his purposeful evocations of silence. This deep and varied "poetics of silence" takes on many forms in Catullus's poetic corpus: underscoring the lyricism of his poetry; highlighting themes of desire, immortality-in-culture, and decay; accenting its structures and rhythms; and, Stevens suggests, even articulating underlying philosophies. Combining classical philological methods, contemporary approaches to silence in modern literature, and the most recent Catullan scholarship, this imaginative examination of Catullus offers a new interpretation of one of the ancient world's most influential and inimitable voices.

Fair morning sat upon the mountain-top And o'er the silent city softly stole The sheen and shimmer of her golden robes. Night skulking crept into the mountain-chasm. The silent ships slept in the silent bay; One broad blue bent of ether domed the heavens, One broad blue distance lay the shadowy land, One broad blue vast of silence slept the sea. Now from the dewy groves the joyful birds In carol-concert sang their matin songs Softly and sweetly - full of prayer and praise. Then silver-chiming, solemn-voiced bells Rung out their music on the morning air, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
