Book excerpt: Emily Baker is in a heap of trouble. Her beloved horse farm is struggling financially, and she’s just found out her late father sold her favorite horse to a sheikh from a country she’s never heard of. The buyer, Zaman Abdul-Rahman is sexy as all get-out, the sort of man who makes a fling with a sheikh seem like a good idea. But Emily isn’t looking for romance, and certainly not with the overbearing alpha male who shows up to take away her beloved and pregnant horse, Riah. Emily refuses to let him until Zaman makes her a generous offer: he’s taking Riah, but he’ll also buy another horse and bring Emily to Qadir for six months to train it for an important race. Despite her hesitation, Emily knows the influx of cash will be enough to save the farm. Before she knows it, she’s traveling to the tiny kingdom and being seduced, not only by this beautiful foreign land but by Zaman, who’s just too gorgeous to resist. Zaman isn’t the sort of man to fall for a woman, especially one with such a fierce streak of independence. But he can’t help being wildly attracted to the beautiful American, and he secretly admires her strength and intelligence. Emily will only be in Qadir for six months, so what’s the problem with giving into their searing passion for a short fling? After all, he’s an expert at not growing too attached to anyone. This time, though, things are different. Emily is different. Maddeningly hard-headed. Thoroughly lovely. And…pregnant with his child. At the news, Zaman’s world shifts dramatically. His protective instincts kick into high gear—and end up pushing Emily away. It soon becomes clear, though, that the only race he wants to win is the one for Emily’s heart…

Book excerpt: This royal romance is off to a rocky start… As a way of apologizing to his matchmaking sister for inadvertently ending her engagement, Sheikh Kadir Oman agrees to let her find him a wife. He needs someone who is unquestionably supportive, especially since he’ll soon be taking over as king of Al-Fatha. His sister thinks headstrong American Stella Green would be perfect for him. She’s smart, beautiful, and seems to love Al-Fatha as much as he does. And the chemistry between them is obvious. But he quickly discovers that Stella’s vision of the country is far different from his—and she’s just as stubborn as he is. Can he stay with a woman who disagrees with him about his country’s path, no matter how strong his feelings are for her? Stella still can’t believe she agreed to marry a man she’d never met—and a king at that! But something in her gut tells her this was the right decision—and not just because her new husband is gorgeous. Their marriage gets off to a rocky start, though, when Stella realizes Kadir’s idea of ruling Al-Fatha is to remove everything that’s beautiful about it. Was their marriage a mistake? Or will they be able to work through their differences and make their love last forever?

Even if their grievances were true and they were victims of gross injustice, can that ever justify killing innocent people? This is a fictional story of the very wise Sheikh Umeed, the Imam, living in New York, who has always been preaching for peace but discovers to his horror that his son has been involved with terrorist activities. We follow his experiences from initial shock and deep dismay to really trying to understand what drives ordinarily peaceful humans to extreme violence; to acknowledge injustice without condoning terrorism. He shares with us the lessons he learns along the way, how we can grow mentally and spiritually and live a life of love, peace and prosperity

'The best book to land on my desk this year' Bobby Ghosh, Time 'A tremendous story of the power of friendship, love, and the transforming grace of God' Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize laureate This is a book about two forms of service that may appear contradictory: war-fighting and peacemaking, military service and social entrepreneurship. In 2001, Marine officer-in-training Rye Barcott cofounded a nongovernmental organization with two Kenyans in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. Their organization-Carolina for Kibera-grew to become a model of a global movement called participatory development, and Barcott continued volunteering with CFK while leading Marines in dangerous places. It Happened on the Way to War is a true story of heartbreak, courage, and the impact that small groups of committed citizens can make in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of administration attempts to discover and impart, principles of administration. Principles can mean either of two things, ie, ethical nature and generalization of behaviour. The first is of an ethical nature, the administration may say we ought to do this list of things in this way. Here the ethical impulse is paramount. Thus, we ought to admit every child that is sick and brought to our door. Or, we ought not let a patient leave, until we absolutely certain that he is capable of returning to work tomorrow morning, at least to get as strong as he was before he was afflicted. These are standards. Ambitions, expressions of what is supremely good in the conduct of the enterprise. There is a relationship between ethical principles and the principles as generalisation of cause and effect. The principle, as ethics may set the purpose; the generalisation may assist in identifying the means whereby the purpose may be achieved. According to Finer, following are the principles of administration. From the apprehension of purpose, from its absorption, flows directly the oneness of leadership that gives form to the whole aggregate of people whose skills are needed for its fulfillment. Leadership e may take the form of a single executive or a duo or a triumvirate and There are numerous forms of collective administrative bodies. One may be final leader to ultimate decisions. Oneness implies that all the personnel are members. The first requirement is the right of people to have positions of authority, or in other words, the of the authority of the situation. This returns to the problem that is to say, the selection and promotion leading to high places. However, there are persons involved in all the techniques of persuasion and command; orientation periods, manuals of policy, periodical conferences, social festivities; the administrator rounds in the manner appropriate to the personality of the particular collection and human beings on the staff and individual counselling. It would be idle to protract that list of the techniques of association of the art, as it were, of making love to other people.

Book excerpt: Beloved bestselling author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni has been hailed by Abraham Verghese as a “gifted storyteller” and by People magazine as a “skilled cartographer of the heart.” Now, Divakaruni returns with her most gripping novel yet, a sweeping, suspenseful coming-of-age tale about a young woman who leaves India for America on a search that will transform her life. THOUGH SHE WAS ORPHANED AT BIRTH, the wild and headstrong Korobi Roy has enjoyed a privileged childhood with her adoring grandparents, spending her first seventeen years sheltered in a beautiful, crumbling old mansion in Kolkata. But despite all that her grandparents have done for her, she is troubled by the silence that surrounds the circumstances of her parents’ death and clings fiercely to her only inheritance from them: the love note she found, years ago, hidden in a book of poetry that had belonged to her mother. As she grows, Korobi dreams of one day finding a love as powerful as her parents’, and it seems her wish has finally come true when she meets the charming Rajat, the only son of a high-profile business family. Shortly after their engagement, however, a sudden heart attack kills Korobi’s grandfather, revealing serious financial problems and a devastating secret about Korobi’s past. Shattered by this discovery and by her grandparents’ betrayal, Korobi decides to undertake a courageous search across post-9/11 America to find her true identity. Her dramatic, often startling journey will ultimately thrust her into the most difficult decision of her life. With flawless narrative instinct and a boundless sympathy for her irrepressible characters, in Oleander Girl Divakaruni brings us a perfect treat of a novel— moving, wise, and unforgettable. As The Wall Street Journal raves, “Divakaruni emphasizes the cathartic force of storytelling with sumptuous prose. . . . She defies categorization.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A bold work from the author of The Black Swan that challenges many of our long-held beliefs about risk and reward, politics and religion, finance and personal responsibility In his most provocative and practical book yet, one of the foremost thinkers of our time redefines what it means to understand the world, succeed in a profession, contribute to a fair and just society, detect nonsense, and influence others. Citing examples ranging from Hammurabi to Seneca, Antaeus the Giant to Donald Trump, Nassim Nicholas Taleb shows how the willingness to accept one’s own risks is an essential attribute of heroes, saints, and flourishing people in all walks of life. As always both accessible and iconoclastic, Taleb challenges long-held beliefs about the values of those who spearhead military interventions, make financial investments, and propagate religious faiths. Among his insights: • For social justice, focus on symmetry and risk sharing. You cannot make profits and transfer the risks to others, as bankers and large corporations do. You cannot get rich without owning your own risk and paying for your own losses. Forcing skin in the game corrects this asymmetry better than thousands of laws and regulations. • Ethical rules aren’t universal. You’re part of a group larger than you, but it’s still smaller than humanity in general. • Minorities, not majorities, run the world. The world is not run by consensus but by stubborn minorities imposing their tastes and ethics on others. • You can be an intellectual yet still be an idiot. “Educated philistines” have been wrong on everything from Stalinism to Iraq to low-carb diets. • Beware of complicated solutions (that someone was paid to find). A simple barbell can build muscle better than expensive new machines. • True religion is commitment, not just faith. How much you believe in something is manifested only by what you’re willing to risk for it. The phrase “skin in the game” is one we have often heard but rarely stopped to truly dissect. It is the backbone of risk management, but it’s also an astonishingly rich worldview that, as Taleb shows in this book, applies to all aspects of our lives. As Taleb says, “The symmetry of skin in the game is a simple rule that’s necessary for fairness and justice, and the ultimate BS-buster,” and “Never trust anyone who doesn’t have skin in the game. Without it, fools and crooks will benefit, and their mistakes will never come back to haunt them.”
