Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Profusely illustrated. All original illustrations have been retained and re-screened for this reprint edition. "The Sexual Life of Savages in North-Western Melanesia" contains ethnographic data that attempts to establish that the Freudian Oedipus complex is not universal. This important work is his second in the trilogy on the Trobrianders, with the other two being "Argonauts of the Western Pacific" (1922), and "Coral Gardens and Their Magic" (1935). In the preface Malinowski says that sexuality "dominates in fact almost every aspect of culture." Malinowski provides a detailed description of the social organization of sexuality - social rites, partner choice, et al - "tracing the Trobriand lifecycle from birth through puberty, marriage, and death." Children don't submit to a system of "domestic coercion" or "regular discipline" - they "enjoy considerable freedom and independence." The idea of a child being "beaten or otherwise punished in cold blood" by a parent is viewed as unnatural and immoral and when proposed by westerners (like the anthropologist) is "rejected with resentment." Things are asked "as from one equal to another; a simple command, implying the expectation of natural obedience, is never heard from parent to child in the Trobriands." The event of a person getting angry and striking another person "in an outburst of rage" sometimes happens but as often from parent to child as from child to parent. In further chapters, the parent-child relationship of the Trobrianders is described with details of their complex matrilineal relationship structure in which the biological parentage is ignored.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sexual Life of Savages in North-Western Melanesia: An Ethnographic Account of Courtship, Marriage and Family Life Among the Natives of the Trobriand Islands, British New Guinea In the nineteenth century the more sombre View pre vailed. The explorers were now mainly English, and they carried with them the anglo-saxon Puritanism for which all sexual customs that are unfamiliar are either Shocking or disgusting. Obscene was the word com monly used, and it was left to the reader's imagination to picture what that might mean. The sexual behaviour of savages seemed mostly unspeakable. The urethral sub incision practised by some Australian tribes was mysteri ously named the terrible rite. A similar mutilation Of the nose or ear, or anywhere a little higher up or a little lower down, would not have seemed terrible; but at that particular spot it aroused a shuddering and Shame faced awe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bronislaw Malinowski was born in Krakow, Poland on April 7, 1884, died 1942. Through the acquisition of an outstanding education and many years of fieldwork, he became a very influential British anthropologist and the founder of Functionalism. He attended King John Sobieski public school then continued on to the University of Krakow where he received his Ph.D. in Philosophy, Physics and Mathematics. In 1913, he lectured at the London School of Economics where he earned his Ph.D. in Science in 1916. It was there that he read The Golden Bough by Sir James Frazer and sparked his interest in anthropology. Malinowski founded the field of Social Anthropology known as Functionalism, holding the belief that all components of society interlock to form a well-balanced system. He emphasized characteristics of beliefs, ceremonies, customs, institutions, religion, ritual and sexual taboos. His New York Times obituary named him an "integrator of ten thousand cultural characteristics." Malinowski?s first field study came in 1915-18 when he studied the Trobriand Islanders of New Guinea in the southwest Pacific. He used a holistic approach in studying the native?s social interactions including the annual Kula Ring Exchange, finding it to be associated with magic, religion, kinship and trade. He contributed to a cross-cultural study of psychology through his observations of the relationships of kinship. He discovered evidence to discredit Sigmund Freud?s theory of the Oedipus Complex in the lives of the Trobianders by proving that individual psychology depends on cultural context. He wrote a book about his fieldwork and experiences entitled Argonauts of the Western Pacific (1922).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic and historical account of the Vienna Circle that deals with the relation of logical empiricists with religion as well as theology. Given the standard image of the Vienna Circle as a strong anti-metaphysical group and non-religious philosophical and intellectual movement, this book draws a surprising conclusion, namely, that several members of the famous Moritz Schlick-Circle - e.g., the left wing with Rudolf Carnap, Otto Neurath, Philipp Frank, Edgar Zilsel, but also Schlick himself - dealt with the dualisms of faith/ belief and knowledge, religion and science despite, or because of their non-cognitivist commitment to the values of Enlightenment. One remarkable exception was the philosopher and Rabbi Joseph Schächter, who wrote explicitly on religion and philosophy after the linguistic turn. The book also covers another puzzling figure: the famous logician Kurt Gödel, who wrote on theology and the ontological proof of God in his so far unpublished notebooks. The book opens up new perspectives on the Vienna Circle with its internal philosophical and political pluralism and is of value to philosophers, historians and anybody who is interested in the relation between science and religion.
