Unfurled their sails on the high seas 'and proudly raised their standards in the most remote corners of the earth. Amundsen returning triumphant from the field of battle has' received the plaudits due the conqueror, while Scott, the heroic Britisher, who likewise stormed the Barrier, scaled the icy ramparts and reached the goal, lies with his companions Where the fight was won, wrapt in the death mantle of the eternal snows. Thus have culminated the great ambitions of two lives. Looking back in vista of the years, there have been others who have struggled no less valiantly or died with the same heroic courage and the Southern Cross has had its votaries, whose love of romance and adventure have led them into untold perils. The extraordinary impetus to Arctic and Antarctic exploration during the last ten years has resulted in the discovery within a very brief period of one another. Book Synopsis The Seventh Continent by : Deborah Shapley
Download or read book The Seventh Continent written by Deborah Shapley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. Part of the resources for the future library collection on Global Environment and Development, this is the final Volume of seven. This book presents a broad-ranging study of Antarctica's history, politics, and development prospects with a command of issues in geography, science policy, technology, and international law, which is addressed with authority and flair. At this time, nations of the world are struggling to fashion a legal framework to govern Antarctic resources, which some regard as the common heritage of mankind. This debate, described vividly here, represents an ongoing application of the common-property resource concept, which has played a prominent role in RFF's research and analytical contributions during the past quarter-century. Furthermore, the continent's energy and minerals endowment-if exploitable at all (and in the author's judgment the prospects for this are dim)-constitute at best resources for the future.

Download or read book The South Pole written by Roald Amundsen and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-16 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Pole is a book by Roald Amundsen and it represents an interesting first-hand account of the Norwegian expedition's successful attempt to reach the South Pole in 1911. Amundsen spends a great deal of time talking about logistics and placing of depots in preparation for his polar attempt all the way from the preparation leading up to the initial sea voyage, the voyage itself and then the establishing of a camp at the Antarctic. Although they were lucky with the weather, and Amundsen attributed the success of the expedition to "good luck", it is obvious that the Norwegian expedition was well prepared and ready for the troubles ahead; the equipment, the sledges with well-trained dogs, the supply depots with seal meat at regular intervals along the route, the sunglasses to avoid snow blindness; it was all thought of in advance.
