Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what happens to the other people in the fairy tale? Things look grim for Talia and her mother. By royal proclamation, the constables and those annoying "good" fairies have taken away their livelihood by confiscating their spinning wheel. Something to do with a curse on the princess, they said. Not every young lady has a fairy godmother rushing to her rescue. Without the promise of an income from spinning, Talia's prospects for marriage disappear, and she and her mother face destitution. Past caring about breaking an arbitrary and cruel law, rebellious Talia determines to build a new spinning wheel, the only one in the nation—which plays right into the evil fairy's diabolical plan. Talia discovers that finding a happy ending requires sacrifice. But is it a sacrifice she's willing to make? 23,000 words

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an invaluable selection of sermons and theological treatises of the twelfth century author, Isaac of Stella. The English born abbot of the French Cistercian monastery of Stella on the Isle of Ré is one of the most inspiring, yet equally elusive, representatives of the great twelfth-century Cistercian Renaissance more widely associated with the person of Bernard of Clairvaux. The astonishing spiritual and intellectual depth of Isaac's surviving writings makes him a valuable read for anyone aiming to receive a complete picture of the intellectual heritage of the Middle Ages. Of the twenty-five sermons by Isaac presented in this volume, ten are made available here in an English translation for the first time. These are accompanied with two new studies examining Isaac of Stella's work from an historical, literary as well as theological perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since about 1985, crop circles have become a more well-known phenomenon. In the meantime, about 10,000 crop circles have appeared in more than 50 countries. However, well over half of them come from southern England in the area of Stonehenge, Woodhenge, Silbury Hill, White Horse and other prehistoric monuments. Some of them can be proved to have been made by humans, but others just as certainly have not been made by humans - this is not the starting situation one would wish for as a researcher ... In the present book 300 of these crop circles are examined more closely. It turns out that they contain approx. 100 elements which appear in many crop circles. Their geometrical form has an easily recognizable meaning. Therefore, with the help of these "words", the crop circles composed of them can be read like "sentences". The meaning is almost always the same: a representation of how individuality unfolds. Therefore, there are many similarities with astrology or the chakra system, for example. This analytical approach is complemented by 50 dream journeys into individual crop circles, which makes the picture that arises from the analytical observation of the crop circles even more rounded. Thereby a first impression can be gained of the language of the collective subconsciousness - which words and which grammar it uses: It is a "music of geometry".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IS SCRIPTURE CLEAR? IF IT IS, WHY DO PORTIONS OF IT SEEM SO OBSCURE? IF IT ISN’T, WHY HAVE THEOLOGIANS SPENT SO MUCH TIME DEFENDING THE NOTION OF ITS CLARITY? AND MORE IMPORTANT, ARE CHRISTIANS ENGAGED IN A FUTILE EFFORT IN TRYING TO READ AND UNDERSTAND IT? JAMES CALLAHAN OFFERS VALUABLE INSIGHT INTO THE COMPLEX NOTION of biblical perspicuity. He sets the issues within the history of the church and traces how the Bible's clarity has been understood practically and theologically over time. With precision and care he clarifies the role of historical context, authorial intent and reader response in a constructive articulation of how we come to understand Scripture's meaning. Contemporary literary studies inform his discussion and suggest the importance of intertextuality and intratextuality in the reading of Scripture. Ultimately, Callahan argues, Scripture must be viewed as a privileged text within a privileged community. Nevertheless, it must be read, not arrogantly, but with humility under the searching glance of the God who caused it to be written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume capture some of the excitement of the 11th International James Joyce Symposium, held in Venice and Trieste, June 1988. ‘The contents of this book are by no means as restrictive as the title might suggest. The contributors explore not only Joyce’s ‘languages’ and modes of communication and meaning, but, as well, concepts of significance and communication in broader contexts. Through Joyce, the writers explore and develop their own approaches and theories about language and languages, about semiotics and understanding. And about psychology, gender, physiology, politics, philosophy, linguistics, science, and culture. About literature in other words.’
