Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Study of Baha'u'llah's Seven Valleys and Four Valleys This new revised edition uses the new translations of Baha'u'llah's Seven Valleys and Four Valleys. During his sojourn in Sulaymaniyah in the 1850s Baha'u'llah came into contact with eminent Sufi leaders. In the Seven Valleys and the Four Valleys, epistles revealed for two of them, He sets forth the foundations of a renewed spiritual path. 'Abdu'l-Baha described the Seven Valleys as 'a guide for human conduct'. This major new study focuses on the historical, doctrinal and literary background of the Seven Valley and the Four Valleys, and on Baha'u'llah's revision of Sufi concepts in the light of the teachings of His new Revelation. Part 1 explains aspects of Sufi doctrine important for an understanding of Baha'u'llah's two epistles. Part 2 looks at literary works by Sufi saints, philosophers and poets quoted by Baha'u'llah, provides background to the stories and legends mentioned, and comments on aspects of Baha'u'llah's allegorical language. Part 3 offers a concise analysis of philosophical and theological themes touched on, comparing Sufi doctrine with the explanations given by Baha'u'llah both in the epistles and in later writings. Part 4 addresses the mystical paths described in the two epistles, with the intention of encouraging personal insights. 'The Baha'i Faith is essentially mystic in character, ' writes Shoghi Effendi. 'Its chief goal is the development of the individual and society, through the acquisition of spiritual virtues and powers.' Comprehensive lists of quotations in the Seven Valleys and the Four Valleys from the Qur'an and the Traditions are given in the Appendices.

Book excerpt: Containing ballads of martial heroism, tales of tragic lovers and visions of the nature of the world, Long Narrative Songs from the Mongghul of Northeast Tibet: Texts in Mongghul, Chinese, and English is a rich repository of songs collected amongst the Mongghul of the Seven Valleys, on the northeast Tibetan Plateau in western China. These songs represent the apogee of Mongghul oral literature, and they provide valuable insights into the lives of Mongghul people—their hopes, dreams, and worries. They bear testimony to the impressive plurilingual repertoire commanded by some Mongghul singers: the original texts in Tibetan, Mongghul, and Chinese are here presented in Mongghul, Chinese, and English. The kaleidoscope of stories told in these songs include that of Marshall Qi, a chieftain from the Seven Valleys who travels to Luoyang with his Mongghul army to battle rebels; Laarimbu and Qiimunso, a pair of star-crossed lovers who take revenge from beyond the grave on the families that kept them apart; and the Crop-Planting Song and the Sheep Song, which map the physical and spiritual terrain of the Mongghul people, vividly describing the physical and cosmological world in which they exist. This collection of songs is supported by an Introduction by Gerald Roche that provides an understanding of their traditional context, and shows that these works offer insights into the practices of multilingualism in Tibet. Long Narrative Songs from the Mongghul of Northeast Tibet is vital reading for researchers and others working on oral literature, as well as those who study Inner Asia, Tibet, and China’s ethnic minorities. Finally, this book is of interest to linguistic anthropologists and sociolinguists, particularly those working on small-scale multilingualism and pre-colonial multilingualism.

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Who Moved My Cheese?, a brilliant new parable that shows readers how to stay calm and successful, even in the most challenging of environments. A young man lives unhappily in a valley. One day he meets an old man who lives on a mountain peak. At first the young man doesn’t realize that he is talking to one of the most peaceful and successful people in the world. But in the course of further encounters and conversations, the young man comes to understand that he can apply the old man’s remarkable principles and practical tools to his own life to change it for the better. Spencer Johnson knows how to tell a deceptively simple story that teaches deep lessons. The One Minute Manager (co-written with Ken Blanchard) sold 15 million copies and stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for more than twenty years. Since it was published a decade ago, Who Moved My Cheese? has sold more than 25 million copies. In fact there are more than 46 million copies of Spencer Johnson’s books in print, in forty-seven languages—and with today’s economic uncertainty, his new book could not be more relevant. Pithy, wise, and empowering, Peaks and Valleys is clearly destined to becomeanother Spencer Johnson classic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reason why I wrote this book is to assist women of all culture and races with some form of knowledge of how to cope in the valleys of life. I hope women will learn from my mistakes and do it better. I am not a saint or self-righteous. My hope is that they will get to know Christ in an intimate way, because if women have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, their lives will become better. They will have a better survival rate than someone who is on their own and has no one. The bad things that people do to you, God turns it around in your favor. God has a purpose for all our lives. He is always working behind the scenes. When people come against you, God allowed it because it is all in his plan to work the kinks out of you and to take the bad parts of you to make you better. Life sometimes is not fair, but it is serving his plan to create you to be better, stronger, wiser, self-assured, and direct you into his purpose for your life. God intended it for good when he use the Judas of your life. It was hurtful to me when people ostracized me, lied on me, betrayed me, etc. It made me stronger, wiser, nonjudgmental, humbled me and gave me empathy for others. Everything serves a purpose in your life. Stay strong, keep the faith, trust God, stay prayerful, decree and declare great things for your life. Believe and see those great things, for your life is happening even if it is not physically in existence (Hebrews 11:1). Never give up, for if you keep on moving and doing the right things, you will someday succeed and be victorious over your obstacles in your life. God is giving you strength by allowing adversities to come into your life. Your adversities come, not to destroy you, but to push you further into God's great plan for your life. This is my life lesson learned, and Christ was guiding me the whole time. "Yea I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. I will fear no evil: For thou are with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me" (Psalm 23:4).

Is it that relationship that you gave your all to only to end up with a broken heart...again? Perhaps it's your children, a family member, or a life-long friend doing you in, dragging you down, pushing you to the brink. If you are an honorary member of the Black Woman's Suffering Society, you have probably been told that it's all your fault. Or that struggling and suffering is your lot in life. Iyanla Vanzant says, No! Life is an Act of Faith and suffering is optional! Those everyday challenges, obstacles, and dilemmas are what Iyanla calls "valleys." As bad as they may seem, there is a purpose or, as Iyanla says, "There is so much value in the valley." If you've ever been disappointed, betrayed, rejected, abandoned, or just plain old scared to let go, then you've been or may still be in a valley. Iyanla knows—she's been there and on a bad day she's still there, but now she shares the way out with you.

Book excerpt: As the Bahá'í community becomes an ever more familiar figure on the international landscape, attention has been increasingly attracted to the teachings of its founder, Bahá'u'lláh. In this groundbreaking study, Nader Saiedi addresses key controversies and problems in the current academic literature about Bahá'u'lláh's writings. Saiedi approaches the subject from sociological, historical, philosophical, spiritual, and theological perspectives and draws on the vast body of previously untranslated original Persian and Arabic texts. Analyzing selected works that represent the three stages of Bahá'u'lláh's revelation, he argues for the conceptual continuity of Bahá'u'lláh's teaching throughout His life, from the inception of His mission in Tehran's Siyah-Chal dungeon to the last books He wrote in exile in Ottoman Palestine. Logos and Civilization is an original and probing investigation of the writings of Bahá'u'lláh, whose visionary insights into the spiritual, social, economic, and political dimensions of humanity in the context of globalization have only begun to attract the attention they merit.

Book excerpt: They walked in the darkest parts of human history: in the blood of genocide, the chains of slavery, in the oppression of women, in the death camps of the Holocaust and in the hatred and exclusion of racism. Yet, where others could see only our worst, they saw another path. And what they discovered, they taught to the rest of us. These ten, and others like them, "declared" human rights by their very lives. Often long before the ideas appeared in documents like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, they were there. When human rights were being born, they were there. Some of their names will be familiar, others will not. Bartolome de Las Casas, Thomas Clarkson, Lucretia Mott, Tahirih, Frederick Douglass, Alain Locke, Primo Levi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr. and Albie Sachs. Yet, you won't find the "official" story of human rights in this book. Indeed, most of the lives you find here, barely appear in that official story. What are human rights? What does it mean to work for them? As we follow their stories we will see through their eyes. "In telling these stories ... this book brings human rights 'close to home', where universal human rights begin, as Eleanor Roosevelt put it. Michael Curtotti has ... done us all a great service in this." Chris Sidoti
